  1. I reckon the OP LITERALLY meant you have to SPEND it all.

No property. No stuff that has value that can have later. No certificates of deposit, annuities, bank accounts, etc. He means HOW WOULD YOU BLOW IT! OP, correct me if I am wrong ...

in this case i would probably have 17,500 girls at the same time using the exchange rate of 35 baht to the dollar and a generous 2,000 baht per girl.

My wife would be upset though and I would probably be upset with myself for setting the world record of STD's caught in one night.

Interestingly it would beat out the Muslim heaven by 190 times to 1, except it would be unlikely that any of the girls would be virgins.

  2. I am guilty of going to the drink section in a 7-11 on a hot day and opening a cold beverage while waiting in a long line. My cold drink would be warm by the time I am able to pay in many circumstances. I have never had a problem however I do recall peculiar looks from the cashier when I handed them an empty bottle.

This guy's mistake was running which presumes guilt. If he would have stood his ground then he may have been alright.

However, I am also guilty of running from the police on occasion on my motorbike because I would rather not pay a bribe for a trumped up charge.

  3. So we can't steal bar mats or donuts. Perhaps we need to make a list of things that can be stolen without the risk of going to jail.

A sign could be put up at arrivals in the airport so everyone knows what they can or cannot steal. It will save the rest of us getting a bad name.

    Nidge.

no point in putting a sign up because an Aussie will just steal it... :)

  4. The whole time I was reading the article I was under the assumption that this was a satire poking fun at the Thai justice system. After reading the comments and realizing that this really happened I am once again overwhelmed with disbelief of this country. Amazing Thailand!!!

  5. - Moved here to be with Thai boyfriend

    - Been here 1 year 4 months now

    - First experience living out of my home country

Lately I have been having spells of getting a bit 'burned out.' Not necessarily missing home as much as getting a bit burned out on Thailand. I don't think it has as much to do with Thailand specifically as it does with the experience of moving to a new country and trying to adapt and be comfortable. I never entertained the delusion of fitting and being a local. I grew up in the USA so no, I am not Thai. Fine and good I can do my best to fit into the basics of social expectations. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret this decision (to move here or to be with the boyfriend) in the least. I guess I am wondering if feeling burned out and missing 'Normalcy' is something most of you other expats go through too. I am learning the language (writing too) and keeping my eyes and ears open to how it all works... but shit, I get frustrated with feeling a bit helpless and not really knowing what the heck is going on around me. Am I expecting too much for only a year here? Am I not as adaptable as I thought? Does what I am trying to describe pass eventually? I am curious to see what some of you folks who have been here longer think about this. Thanks.

just power through it. it will get better soon. when things start becoming available to you that can offer detractions you will be set.

PM me if you want hear a suggestion

  6. Well I am back and happy to be back. My trip overall went fairly well. The few panic attacks that I had were family related anyway and less because of any reverse culture shock. I had disdain for my country for a long time however visiting just in the last few weeks I somewhat miss it already. My plan now regardless of how I feel about it is to change continents with my wife and son in the months ahead. We will all be going to Sin City Nevada to try and make a name for ourselves. The nice thing about being married to a Thai and being a father of a half Thai boy is that Thailand will never be very far away for me. I am taking the important pieces with me, and when I need the whole thing then it will be called a "family trip" to go and see the inlaws in Udon.

worst parts of the trip: flight time, price of food was very high, slow drivers, weather ( it was cold when i was there), being able to understand strangers boring conversations. Fat and rude people (not all but enough to note). A brother on dope.

best parts: of the trip: a wonderful beer selection, good friends stay true friends over time, TV with HD ready channels, English programming on TV, Spoken english with my own accent and understood by complete strangers. The place is clean EVERYWHERE and never noticed as much until I was back.

p.s. an interesting observation that I made is that Thai's live outside and socialize and pass the time away outdoors. Westerners hide behind walls and do something in there that I am not too entirely sure of. (I'll get back to you if i can figure it out)...

  7. I ride a big sportbike in bangkok and have a blast but there are so many police in this country that it would making enjoying a sportbike almost impossible. i see a lot of people riding however they are riding with the flow of traffic. it would kill me to not be able to lane split.

another thing, on the road it seems that everyone is always pissed off. i was in a traffic jam that lasted about 3 minutes and cars were honking and the drivers looked very impatient. i just sat there with a smile because it felt a little bit like bangkok.

a lot of people have asked if i can speak Taiwanese and I tell them that I have never been to Taiwan before.

  8. 1 week has gone by now and i want to go back to Thailand. I had a panic attack last night and wanted to go straight to the airport. Only 2.5 more weeks to go and then i am back.

There are too many differences to list and when i get my head around the ones that stick out then i will post them.

  9. ok, i'm in the US now (only about 10 hours so far) and my first few observations...

    1. flight attendants on domestic flights in the US are genuinely ugly, much like you would imagine fat crack whores without teeth and no visible sign of personal hygiene and a bad attitude. (this is before i even made it to my destination)

    2. the fear on my friends face when his car was parked a few inches from the driveway onto the sidewalk. he was seriously afraid that the police would ticket him for something that i couldn't see.

    3. without realizing it i left my shoes outside my brother's house. everyone was asking where are my shoes? my first instinct to this question was to look outside and sure enough they were sitting by the door.

many more sure to come. i haven't slept since the 20 hour journey and will most likely freak out a bit more tomorrow.

  10. Why is it so expensive when a cow gets sick? Medication can't be all that much for cattle can it? Maybe you should go and see the cow personally to determine how sick it is. If they are just trying to get money out of you then their gig will be up if you don't see a sick cow, if they really do have a sick cow then you will be able to help.

  11. i don't get it. drawing with light??? so???

your body is hooked up with light sensors and wherever the light passes then pressure is applied to that part of the body.

personally all i can see that doing is making your partner horny enough to seek out the real thing. it is an interesting concept though by having triggers that can only be accessed though light. what happens though when your local partner walks in the room and turns on the lights? Full body orgasm? This is taking phone/cyber-sex to a whole new level. I believe that it could also be replicated through software and therefore eliminating all human interaction which would therefore reduce world over population. It is a brilliant idea. Where do I sing up? (my missus is in the other room depriving me at the moment)

  12. ... i know, i seem to remember we went to bali around the same time too! funny that.
For me, I am looking for open doors and will return to Thailand if there is nothing there for me.

me too... i do have plans to return to thailand in august but i am open to any other paths life might lead me down. never know what might happen in this 3 months!

    good luck!

never been to bali. Singapore on occasion but that is as near to Bali as I got unfortunately.

  13. i am also headed back (tonight!) ....

....can't say there is much of anything i am looking forward to experiencing in the states! except the paychecks!

girlx, i think we are living parallel lives. both from the US, both went to Koh Phangan then back to Bangkok, and now returning to the US within a day of each other. I've probably met you before and we just don't know it. Anyway, do you have plans of coming back to Thailand or are you moving back to the States? For me, I am looking for open doors and will return to Thailand if there is nothing there for me. Gotta support the family now ya know...

  14. Motorcycles

-When you ride your motorcycle on the wrong side of the road against heavy traffic during rush hour because your turn is only 3 blocks back.

    - You ride your motorcycle on the sidewalk because there are too many cars on the road.

    - When the police try to stop you at a check point and you run because you don't want to pay a 200 baht fine/bribe.

    People

    - When a Thai person speaks to you in English and for some reason you are only able to respond in Thai.

    - When your child is kidnapped and returned unharmed on a daily basis.

    - You are no longer startled by men trying to massage your shoulders while you urinate.

    Hygiene

    - You prefer cold showers to hot ones.

    - You wash your hands with ice cubes.

    - When you are hot you wipe your face with toilet paper.
