One of my pals once pointed out, if I were to walk into a room with 99 nice ladies and 1 psychopath, I would walk out of that room with the psychopath. I realised he was completely correct, the weird thing being I want them and they want me, no need to even talk, by some unknown way we both know.

    Strange but true.

(I'm not sure if that makes me 'defective')

    Quantum Thaitanglement ????

  2. Easy to get a woman anywhere. Hard part is finding one better than yourself.

How old are you, how old do you want her to be?

How good looking are you and how about her?

How fun are you and how fun you want her to be?

How much do you spend a month? The great levelling tool if you score low on the above.

Got the green light from my Thai lady and my bi-polar Brazilian GF the vote is 52-48, haha.  When you've dated girls for 25 years that are 25 years younger, the money issues have been ironed out. Besides just imagine how much two wives in the USA would have cost me over twenty-five years. A quality GF is always more affordable than a wife or God forbid a bar girl.

    You are 66?

25 years ...you started at 41.

    They're 25 years younger!

    That makes them 16!!!!!

You just need to be very close to a BTS or MRT and Bangkok is easily accessible. Look at an interactive map and check out condos close to a BTS or MRT and check what infrastructure is near them. Your choice of area really does depend on your age, lifestyle and budget.

Around Rama 9 you have got a large central mall and fortune town and a Tesco. You can also walk down to a Big C in about 10 minutes and there are a few gyms there. I stayed in that area near the Esplanade Mall for a few months at Amanta Hotel and Residences until I bought a place elsewhere. Your only restriction there is that its an MRT serviced area and to use the BTS requires an interchange stop, but its not a great hassle as MRT is very good to use.  We liked the area but there weren't any parks there for me to run, which I liked doing.

I only spent a month in the Asoke area and I did like it there as well but I found that there were less restaurants and conveniences in the specific area I was in (Soi 39) if I remember rightly.

My option for living was based on my wife and my preferrences. The condo cost per Sq Meter for the place we bought was pretty similar to prices around Rama 9 and maybe a bit cheaper than Asoke but I thought expensive for the area, but all of the new condos in the area were similarly priced. The rental and purchase prices have dropped by about 20% from the look of it.

I moved to Saphan Kwai in 2018 because it had more non tourist restaurants and conveniences but was still within walking distance (10 to 15 mins) of quite a lot of western options in Ari.  Plus importantly for me there was the large recreational parks at Chatuchak for running or walking, has got private hospitals, large supermarket all within easy short walk (say 5 minutes max) and it has BTS which is only a 30 second walk from the condo and also MRT access, which is a 10 minute walk(though I drive too). Also its only 2 BTS stops to Ladprao Central and Union Mall, which I can also walk to in 30 mins if I don't want to catch the BTS and of course Chatuchak Market is a 5 minute walk to the nearest entry gate. Not too much nightlife though unless you want Thai Nightclubs, but I am married and don't bother with the nightlife a great deal. I also walk to the River sometimes for general relaxation and its anout a 30 minute walk to the river and new parliment. Also with driving you want to be near an access to the expressway or main arterial roads to minimise secondary road commuting.

So make a list of what you want and at what budget and then research  which area provides you with your needs and wants and then the area selection becomes easier.

Saphan Kwai sounds great. Have you noticed any down sides since?

OP, what made you pick "The Life" Condos and why did you restrict it to those 2 (e.g. there's a "Life" Sukuhmvit 48 which is close to Phra Khanong BTS station & not a bad place to live).... The reason I ask is answering that question for yourself might help you decide which condo/area is best for you... Either of them will be fine for the odd trip to other parts of Bangkok, as others have said, if you were having to do a commute everyday then it makes much more sense to live closer to where you need to be.

FWIW I live in On Nut at one of the Ideo properties & really like the area (though moving to Wongamat at the end of August), my mate was also living in the same complex but has recently moved to Asoke and when I was looking around condos there with him I quickly came to the conclusion that it wasn't for me as not only is there no reason for me live in that area (I'm retired) and so pay the "Premium" that you have to pay when living closer to "The center" but the traffic there would do my head in & I don't even drive in Bangkok!

I do recall my 1st trial run at long term living in Bangkok, I booked 1 month in The Trendy building on Soi 13 & had to leave after 10 days as the pollution from the traffic was getting on my chest (48 & in very good shape at the time so it wasn't an age/health thing, it was purely the crappy air pollution in the city center).

why are you leaving onut Mike?

If one needs 100k a month to live on, and doesn't spend it on women, one's rent must IMO be astronomical.

I lived on way less than 30,000 baht a month and that was in a very nice hotel

Sorry for being nosey,, but I've read other posts of yours. It appears.

    1. You love Thailand

    2. Life in the UK sucks for you.

    3. You get the state pension

    4. You lived on less than 30k in Chiang mai.

    5. The pension is £780 or 35k.

why aren't you living in thailand?

  7. How much a month does life cost you in the UK now?

If living rent free what would it cost someone else and add that to the total.

If you live outside London Bangkok will cost you about 60% of that amount to live similarly. Bangkok will cost the same as the UK if you improve your lifestyle without changing your core persona!lity.

Bangkok will cost a lot more of you change from a book reading recluse to a bell ringing hedonist.

To refer to the main topic of giving back sometimes we think it has to be a major event when in fact there are many ways we can give back in the form of service to others. Here are some ideas. Service can be a very small thing like visiting someone in need, being a good friend, saying  hello to your neighbor, just being their when someone needs you. You will be surprised how doing small things for someone will make you feel good and make you feel you have a purpose. I have a thai wife and two teenage girls and my wife's mother lives with us. We all love each other so much. I try to give everyone a good life and try to support them and help them with things in their life's. This gives me a great sense of purpose in life. I think life is about giving to others and it can be as small as a smile to a Stanger.

Though I desperately want to agree with your post.

"We all love each other so much"

My fear (for doing what you've done) All the other three love each other without any monetary incentives. It's not possible to remove the movement of resources from the flow of love in your case.

I do not like where this attitude leads me.

  9. John Aspinall, a famous British gambler, started his own tiger zoo. The difference was that the keepers went into the enclosure while the tigers were there. The tigers treated the keepers as friends until the day they didnt. A keeper gets eaten their every decade I guess.

No predicting which tiger, which keeper, which day. It's just an eventuality that will occasionally happen.

Doesn't stop people loving working there.

  10. I used to teach private eng!ish lessons to Japanese students. I was all smiles. Looked like I was having a great time. Except when I was teaching someone more attractive than me, and that's not saying much, and also rare, I couldn't wait to get my money and get out of there.

I drank beer after the class sometimes ( all part of the service)

It always amazes me how people don't realise that service industry workers are all faking it.

A friend of mine had half his stomach removed because of cancer. Cost him about 2 million baht.

So how much should the average irresponsible foolish uninsured expat have in the bank for health emergencies?

If he comes from the uk, enough to get him a flight home.
