  1. I had only 38 channels before.....no Fox Sports etc.....Now after the update I have less... 36. Definitely no Stadium 7.

Something wrong there Ned, have you done the OTA upgrade? This might be stopping you from receiving channel upgrade. CTH sent me a Facebook message at lunch asking if I could receive stadium 7.

  2. Blue you have lost me on this one,not difficult i hear you say!

Are you saying the 1pm kick-offs will be at 11pm Thai time 100%

    4pm.....3am!

    5pm......4am

with the only decent times for us here being 7pm kick offs 6am Posted Image

Not many late games on here http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/

I cant see them changing them till late evening there as it will be 1 am in Europe but better for us here although the 1pm kick-offs will be watchable at 11pm if left ....difficult one this for FIFA.

    When I last checked games brazil time were 1pm = 11pm Thai, 4pm = 3am Thai, 6pm = 5am Thai. With the exception of a 9pm ko in Manaus, northern brazil, so 11hr behind = 8am Thai.

The northern cities were moved to early kick offs as FIFA feared delays with heavy rain. Now FIFApro have backed moves to change this due to peak temperatures of 30.C +. I suspect these games could be moved to 9pm local kick offs

(8am thailand)Personally 11pm Thailand better for me. No final decision yet.

  3. I see that Stadium 7 has appeared. (for me at least). There must have been an update as all my favourites had been cleared down.

That's great news!!!! Was it an automatic update, or did you do by yourself? What channel number?

  4. Sorry for those who consider opening a debate and voicing an opinion whining.

Ok, so perhaps it has always been the law to have a Thai license and only now is it being enforced more. I haven't bothered getting a license sorted before as only just got the car.

However lets look at other existing laws that were not enforced before that are equally unfair, then BOOM! Busted, such as the incident of the musicians getting done at the jazz bar a while back for no W.P! Playing for free yet deemed to be making a profit in the bar, thus illegal. Some of you would say "we'll it's the law so obey it or go back home!" Yet the point to me opening this debate is to show that these "laws" are all abused for the same thing, money. Even if you pay at the station the cop gets commission for the ticket. Yet most happy to fill his pockets. Yes it's a win, win situation for all and yea it's a cheap one. But it could all be done so much fairer. That's my point, that's my opinion. I love this country and if you check my posts I rarely, rarely 'whine' about anything. But from time to time there will be things we don't agree with here, which is the same for anyone anywhere.

Off to get Thai license tmrw.... Thank you, and goodnight!

You forgot to mention that one of them was bragging about it on facebook as well as claiming not to have a work permit but making tons of money.

Did you put a big kick me sign on your back.

Didn't know that. But I think some if them did play for free.

Where in this thread have I ever said I was stopped, arrested or fined? Quite the opposite actually. Stop misquoting, it makes you look like a retard

  7. I dislike some phrases, such as if you sit in a barber's chair long enough you'll get a haircut.

Delighted to hear you have a mainly positive experience in the rooms so far. At the risk of sounding as if I am teaching my granny how to suck eggs, I don't think this saying means you should never go into a bar or wet place again. It means you shouldn't hang out in them. The advice I got was if I have a good reason to be in a wet place, then go - like to meet friends. However if you are making the pub your prime social outlet then you significantly increase your chances of drinking again; plenty of alternatives to bars for socialising - you'll probably start drinking a lot more coffee! I would advise you to avoid other people's piss ups as they might inadvertently become your next relapse. I go out to events and functions in bars and hotels and never been bothered about the drinking. In fact the first wedding I went to sober, I realised that there was no one at it who was hammered in the way I would have been had I been drinking! Keep well and strong.

Many thanks for your advice. Good point.

I feel loads better at the moment. Nearly 3 weeks sober. I am anxious about upcoming events I have to attend. Close friends I hope will understand I'm doing this to be a better person and won't shun me.

There is a religious aspect to AA, which i dont like. Although the sharing of similar experiences I've had makes me realise I'm doing the right thing.

Good luck to the rest of you on the same journey.

  8. Surely it would have been fairer to allow a 6 month grace period for foreigners to switch over to a Thai license, In line with the period allowed to drive on a IDL?

TIT.... Money talks when it comes down to the BIB.

  9. Wear a helmet…

The debate about whether the cops are out there collecting tea money or trying to promote helmet usage is irrelevant. Head injuries are sucking huge amounts of money out of the public health system. Less than half of motorcycle riders wear helmets. Less than ten percent of children wear helmets. The cops at the bridge are part of the solution even if they are targeting farangs over Thais. I’ve seen many Thais paying fines.

    Get a license…

I had never been in an accident in my life until a guy five cars ahead decided at the last minute to make a U-turn in heavy going-home traffic. Everyone stopped within inches of each other, no contact…until the double-decker bus plowed into back of my pickup. My Thai mechanic friend/insurance agent was on the scene before cars were towed to the police station. I was the only farang. If I had not had a valid Thai license, I would have been taken to the cleaners, just as you would be in the states. Fines after moving violations there, can reach into the thousands of dollars without a valid license.

Fair point, as I said I've only had my car a very short time. Wasn't aware of that.

  10. Did you all get a full quota of 3pm kickoffs yesterday by the way?

I say that because Al Jazeera only had one game live (Arsenal) and kept scrolling the banner about "Only for broadcast in the Middle East".

They just said it was down to "reasons beyond our control". If it was a technical fault, I'd expect it to be the same in Thailand.

I'm wondering if Sky are getting fed up with them flogging cards to the UK and decided to put a bit of pressure on them.

I think you may well be right there. EPL fuming that bars and clubs in UK have been able to access al-jazeera signal.

  11. I've returned to the UK before, realised I didn't have my UK licence counterpart, and instead shown my Thai licence and successfully hired the car with that. (I also put my country of residence as Thailand, and got the car for about a third less than the price it offered when UK was entered as place of residence. This was with one of the big car hire places.)

You can rent a car in almost any country with almost any license. The rental companies don't care. They get paid no matter what.

It's the police who will be demanding to see the proper licensing required by the country's laws. If you don't have it, you pay.

I had a look at Budget UK's terms and conditions, and oddly, under "Drivers Licence Requirements" it doesn't say "We don't care", rather "Residents of EC countries can use own licence from country of origin. Non-EC residents can use own licence for max 12 months after entry to UK."

I shall be writing a strongly worded letter to my MP, insisting that the 12mth probation period for a Thai license in UK is revoked on the grounds it isn't reciprocated here.

  12. Just curious if you were in the UK driving with a Thai drivers license would you be so upset about them saying you should have a UK one?

Situation would not occur. You can drive with a 5 year Thai license in the UK for 12mths. Here they don't even give you one day's grace. despite the fact the test standards are far superior. It's another way to extract money, whichever way you look at it, IMO unfairly.

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

It doesn't matter. You are in Thailand, it does not matter what they do or do not do in the UK. You are basically moaning because you got caught breaking the law. Oh, and good luck with driving through a police check; I hope you are bullet proof.

I always wind the windows down and play this when passing through the rip off points!

  13. b.b.to save yourself time and maybe money check with the licencing dept.that they will except confirmation of your place of residence via the british embassy.when i renewed my 5yr.tdl.they would not except, letter from embassy 5yrs.old but it had the same address as my 1yr.tdl. my thai tax id.card which has my name and address on,even a letter from the tax dept.which was only 3months old.they said only confirmation of your address would be excepted from where all my records are at the immigration offices where i do my 90day report

    and extensions.

cost 500bht.no receipt so b.b.keep cool, smile and as your walking out of the door under your breath [fking theives].

  14. But there's a reason for why a Thai license wouldn't be accepted in England.

A 5 year Thai driving Licence is accepted in the UK, even for rentals. For up to 12 months , I believe.
    That is scary!

Exactly! Very dangerous that a Thai national could legally drive on British roads with the inept test given here, yet UK licenses are deemed not worthy in Thailand!

  15. no driving licence.

failing to stop when told to.

you have broken the law twice.

    pay 500bht.to pass go.

hopefully they will have your car reg.no.

    6months in the slammer.

what do you think about that.

I have a UK driving license, which up until recently has been fine.

My point is they are abusing the new law and regulations for personal gain and i wont be playing that game with them.I somehow doubt very much I will be doing any big bird for not stopping for corrupt cops. If I broke the law then, then what are they doing by pocketing the money?

It's no big deal. Will just make sure I avoid narawat bridge and go around the river in future to get to where I need to.

  16. Yep, have every reason to complain, when a Thai license / test holds about as much water as a leaking incontinent bag, compared to a UK license! Especially when a 5 year Thai license can be used for 12 months in the UK. Am I the only one who thinks something is a bit skew miss here?

  17. I posted many months ago,on a similar thread, that I had been pulled up in Hua Hin in a rental car and asked politely for my Thai driving licence which I had.

The policeman informed me that there was a crack down on foreigners who had been here a long time but were still driving on the their original licences from their home country.

I think that's completely reasonable and acceptable thinking if you intend to live here.

What I don't understand, with many expats, is all the "drama" when they have to spend some time at Immigration or at Hang Dong Licensing making themselves legal according to the laws in this country whether you think they are not fair or not is irrelevent.

There is this mind set that "Oh I'm in Thailand I should be able to do what I want. Just do it.

Finally let me tell you if you were in my home country and not having a valid license, not wearing a helmet etc you would be seriously out of pocket or banned from driving for repeat offences.

Fair point sparkles. I think my main point to this topic has been missed. I'm not against the enforcing of this regulation. If its the law, then so be it. I am against the BIB using it as another excuse to personally profit from it.

I will get myself fully licensed up ASAP.

That's right - handy when your UK licence has expired.

If that's the case it makes it even more of a farce that they're fining / scamming foreigners who are in possession of a valid license from their home country!

  19. Someone said I can get proof of residency from immigration, another said the consulate / embassy. Anyone know which one for sure? This is a definite requirement for the Thai license, yes?

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

Definite requirement and the one from immigration will most likely be much cheaper than the one from your consulate/embassy.

    David

I'll look into it. Immigration is packed solid most days. So could be quicker at UK consulate. Willing to pay more if it saves a wasted day.

    Thanks for the info.

  20. @Bangkok Blue

If you don't want to get the ticket, get a license. I had mine (car and motorcycle) within a week of getting to CM. Never had a chance to use them though since I have never been stopped in the 3 years I have lived here. Maybe they think a westerner with a helmet, armored jacket, and gloved is going to just be squared away with the paperwork as well.

Don't like paying tea money? Just don't do it. Nothing says you have to do it. Take your ticket, go to the station, and pay up.

And thanks for the laugh where you said "surely the standards of driving tests in UK and America for example are good enough to drive here!" Maybe in the UK you can get away with driving with a Thai license rather than a UK license but not likely in the US.

So, get the license and the insurance and quit whining about the police enforcing the law.

    David

The standard of the UK driving test is FAR superior to the Thai one. So why shouldn't a UK driving license be considered acceptable for Thailand? Obviously they don't, at present. But there's a reason for why a Thai license wouldn't be accepted in England. What a ridiculous comparison!

Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

Wasn't meant to be a comparison. It was to point out that each country sets its own standards for what is acceptable within its borders. I too think the driving tests in the UK and the US are more stringent than the ones in Thailand, however, Thailand requires a Thai license just as the UK requires a UK license and the US requires a US license. And all three have penalties for driving without the proper license.

    David

Fair enough David, but maybe a Thai license is acceptable for a temporary period, as per above post.

I'm surprised no one else thinks its wrong the cops are using this new regulation to personally profit. I'm also surprised that the powers that be don't consider a western driving license, which had stricter tests good enough for here. Especially as UK citizens drive on the same side of the road as Thailand. Hey ho T.I.T! I'll get what I need this week to avoid any potential issues.

Yes, that's me. However your mother doesn't complain too much since she bought me the gimp mask for my birthday! Apparently it was cheaper than the dog collar I bought for her! X
