  1. THB is up against EUR by more than 5% Also up against some other Asian currencies
  2. English has a 3-way distinction, village - town - city. Not easy to figure this out for people whose language has only a 2-way distinction. It doesn't make things easier for us non-native speakers that in the US they call things a town even if there are only 100 inhabitants (they just don't use the word village, it seems). So, let me ask an Englishman: do you call Chiang Mai, Korat and Pattaya "town" or "city"?
  3. Linguists have called Northern Khmer "Surin Khmer" at a time Wikipedia and the internet didn't exist yet. I have always found it strange, but don't blame Wikipedia. Surin Khmer is by some considered unique in that it is the only language where every vowel of the vowel triangle is used as a phoneme.
  4. Good point. He was alone in the wilderness when he was attacked by the anaconda, no way to get help.
  5. You are right, but all the other requirements (must have a welfare card and receive welfare, must pay installments for a NHA house, cannot employ foreigners, max stall size 3sqm) mean, only "poor Thai" can be a street vendor
  6. Today's Bangkok Post has an article how the city government wants to drag street vendors into the formal economy. One of many requirement for street vendors: they must be in the RD system (with not more than 300,000 income after deducting Business-related costs) People who post "most Thais don't pay taxes" should read it. (But they will probably say "oh, they will never enforce it")
  7. There are DTAs where you can be tax resident in both countries. Things get very complicated then.
  8. You are a bit too strict. Pattaya is usually called a city. Wikipedia says "Chiang Mai[a] is the largest city in northern Thailand" (I wonder what others there are??) A place like Si Saket (or Surin)? Maybe Gottfrid would call it a metropolis?
  9. Thanks for this info. I once learned (in Brasil) that the way to dea with an anaconda trying to constrict you is slicing its body with a knife. I fortunately never had to try whether this really works, but the guy who told me had done this before. So, with a python it wouldn't work, right?
  10. TSH test checks thyroid function. I think so
  11. No. A colonoscopy is recommended every 10 years, starting at 45 or 50, until somewhere in your 70s (depends on guidelines and individual)
  12. I beg to differ. So don't talk about "ANYONE", talk about yourself. I still remember the time when you, too, Mr Heineken, posted useful things. That's why I still read your posts. But lately, I found them not very interesting, one reason is I am not from Australia. I would very much prefer a thread for each nationality. I don't know what is a superannuated IRA (401) for non-doms, neither do I want to know.
  13. That's the most important one
  14. The government isn't interested in taxing the poor. On the contrary, there is talk about negative income tax. But they are interested in taxing the informal sector, if the money is substantial (so, not the motorcycle gang) 2 ways to do it: formalize more parts of the economy (close "illegal" guesthouses and restaurants, abolish street vendors, favor 7-11 over mom-and-pop, legalize casinos...). And monitor all financial transactions (PromptPay was supposed to do this). It's work in progress Thai middle class, even the lower middle class, know very well they should pay taxes and they know how to avoid (ever rented a condo with 2 rental contracts?) and evade (use cash) taxes.
  15. You cannot contract shingles. If you ever had chickenpox (in your mother's generation, almost everybody), the virus will sleep in your body forever and can get activated (for many reasons) to cause shingles decades later.
  16. Herpes Zoster is the usual name all over the world. Only native speakers of English say "shingles" in colloquial speech (doctors would say herpes zoster) Could it be your Thai doctor was not a native speaker of English?
  17. If you call 0.15% very common... I have some lottery tickets I would like to sell you. BTW bacterial pericarditis is rare and very different from what is discussed in this thread
  18. It has been said that you can get a DTV only once. The poster @georgewho wrote this is not known for posting rubbish
  19. Grandma's burial in a village in Ban Kruat followed Khmer customs, Her grandchildren are all literate in Thai, speak Thai at the Amphur or with the bank. They have a Khmer accent, which sometimes leads to discrimination. In the family, Khmer is preferred (a lot of code switching, as someone else posted). Similar in the villages of A. meuang, Surin.
  20. Seriously. One friend brought almost 100,000 US cash. At least, he got a certificate from customs. Another friend did exactly what yumthai said, always brought several thousand. Keepin it well hidden under his mattress and waiting for the baht to depreciate These people do exist.
  21. I know someone who actually did this. Now, how to prove he has these cash savings?
  22. It has occurred to many people in the various tax threads, written many times.
  23. You assume - TRD is stupid (I don't think so) or - TRD doesn't care (I think so, if the amounts are small - but in that case, is it worth it?) You run the risk that your tax official gets angry at you: "do you think we are stupid?" But who knows, her reaction might also be "you very smart". TIT
  24. It has been said before: gift your wife money to buy her own land, her own car, her own lottery tickets and her own beauty cream. If you gift money to her to buy beauty cream, and then you are the one who uses the beauty cream - I wouldn't do that.
  25. @CapraIbex has written " a 'monetary gift contract' drafted by a Thai lawyer, specifying that the gift is genuine and intended solely for my wife's benefit, and detailing the purpose of the gift (such as purchasing government or corporate bonds, a car, building a house, or anniversaries) with my wife also drafting a 'gift acceptance contract,' " I would add the occasion of the gift (even if not necessary between spouses, according to the letter of the law), and have gift contract for each gift. As far as you know, would that be sufficient?
