  1. Origin is irrelevant to the conversation at hand. We're talking about current day Americans abroad, specifically in Thailand.
  2. What does arrogance have to do with how someone spells words? Language evolves. Thats the nature of it. Im not really sure what point you're trying to make other than being offensive by making repeated generalizations. BTW, you spelled "surely" wrong.
  3. Nearly had the same thing happen to me. Seems more common than not. Ive come to assume that with sales of anything here (especially assets and items of substantial value) there's some smoke and mirrors. Its whether or not you notice it. For this reason my wife didn't get her diamond ring until we went back to the States.
  4. Ya...and thats sorta an unfortunate part of that culture too.
  5. I think most people who aren't from the US think Texas and think of cowboys, hence the discussion on 10 gallon hats going on somewhere above. The same way when people think of spoken American English they always seem to impersonate Valley-girl/guy accents and if you mention NY they throw on a bogus Goodfellas accent.
  6. What are you talking about. Each of those has their own variations of words, phrases, and spelling dictated by how a word is pronounced. Learnt, for example.
  7. I don't know much about Mexican Texas culture. I was referring to Texas in general as having a culture of its own different than most parts of the US which most who are not from Texas will not understand.
  8. American culture is quite informal. It doesn't dawn on most especially younger generations. No hats in a building is/was taught to us in school when we were kids but you're going back some 35 -40 years. There's a lot of common courtesies that have fallen off. That being said I still wear a hat to the gym because I'm playing sports and often both inside and outside during a workout.
  9. The assumption wasn't that you don't live in England. The assumption was that you don't live in the United States and therefore are ignorant to the culture, references, idioms, metaphors, slang and oh yeah...abbreviations used in spoken and written American English. The conversation we're having (were having) is about pointing out the idiosyncrasies of written American English. There was never a dispute over your level of proficiency in English. There's plenty of people with high levels of achievement that can be wrong. Regardless you still chose to dispute an American English speaker over what we call the two letter abbreviations for states within our country and for that matter, the LEARNERS version (as in the version for someone who needs to learn) of the Oxford Advanced Dictionary.
  10. Texas has its own culture. It's a mystery to anyone who isn't from Texas.
  11. A reinforcement of arrogance? Thats a pretty strong assumption to make based on someone wearing a hat in a building. Who the hell says they speak American? If this is your circle of American acquaintances you might want to consider leveling up
  12. He would have been better if they wouldn't have stymied him
  13. Doubtful there's a difference for this definition between the two versions. Seeing as it's obviously a struggle for you to comprehend the difference between abbreviations and acronyms and coupling that with the fact that you choose to continuously argue with a native English speaker from the country in which you don't live and are not from the LEARNERS version seems more apropos. Have a fine day
  14. Tipping service staff. Thats something I've found to be almost intrinsically American.
  15. Just out of curiosity...where did you attend school? Bet it wasn't Oxford. Or even remotely close.
  16. I was a fan of the guy with the viking helmet who was arrested and subsequently went on a food strike because he couldn't get organic food
  17. Really don't care about the complexity of whatever it is you're babbling about. Ive provided you resources and information on what they're called. Call em whatever you want. They're abbreviations by multiple definitions.
  18. I don't need to pitch you dude. I get nothing from it. I quit working corporate jobs at 40 and turned to my own thing after 5 years of traveling the world. Do and believe what you want.
  19. I'd do a bit more research if I were you https://about.usps.com/who/profile/history/state-abbreviations.htm
  20. 200K+ are some high earners in the US and from my experience the employers treat them rather well. I dont think anyone under the age of 35-40 would have anything good to say about working in the corporate world.
  21. They're state abbreviations...not state acronyms. PA ... Pennsylvania TN .. Tennessee MS ... Mississippi Acronyms NWA .. NorthWest Airlines DL ... Delta Airlines DTW ... Detroit airport (Detroit Metropolitan Airport located in Wayne County) You're welcome
  22. With the exception of WM those are official abbreviations...not acronyms.
  23. Depends on how long you've been with the company and if they are a decent employer. 15-20 (3 - 4 weeks vacation)
  24. Pretty much true. Visited home last year and it was the first time I ever felt 'unsafe" walking around the streets of the city I grew up in. I had my wife with me and it was her first time in the States so I was on high alert the whole time while trying to show her what it was like living in a big US city. Costs are prohibitively expensive for everything. Not a lot of value for your money anymore. The once nice neighborhoods are infiltrated with crime. The sh!tty neighborhoods are war zones. Public education is a joke. You'll wait a month to 6 weeks for a non critical doctors appointment and of course there's always the weather. To be honest...I couldn't wait to get back to Thailand. I'm happy I grew up American in a big diverse city. It prepares you for pretty much anything that comes your way in the future. But I'm far from being that scrappy kid walking around with no valuables and looking over their shoulder every 30 seconds. Leaving was the best thing I ever did. So was maintaining business ties.
