  1. ...It is normal for rank and honours to be recalled if police or military officers commit criminal offences, Gen. Sanan said, but rank could be restored to a particular officer if he receives an amnesty.

On Channel 9's MCOT News a few days ago, it was stated quite clearly, but maybe incorrectly, that only serving police officers can have their rank removed and since Thaksin was not a police officer at the time of his offence(s), his rank could not be removed.

  2. Err, is it just me but don't all cars and trucks have the correct pressures on a plate inside the driver's door ?

My D-Max says 29 all around but I initially thought that too low...

Yes, my pick-up has a sticker there that says 29 all round, but I usually pump up to 30.

...I check tyres for stones all the time and use a little soup spoon to remove them, kept in the glove compartment...

Me too - small flat ended screwdriver wrapped up with a pressure gauge. (I hate that ticking noise when a stuck stone hits the road).

...I also bought a cheap tyre pump here in thailand, so i can do the pressures at home ... and they simply plug into the cigarette lighter....that way you can always pump up at home before setting off....

Me too. Mine is made by "MyCarr" (?) - noisy little thing, vibrates like buggery but does the job.

... I keep them at 35 psi for general high speed no load driving. I find the tyres squeal on corners if they drop below 32...

That irritating squealing noise is probably your tyres doing what they are supposed to do - grip the road. If you pump them up so that they don't sit flat on the road, then they won't squeal because the edges won't be in contact with the road.

    Up to you! :o

PS. My tyres squeal incredibly loudly and people turn to look whenever I do a U-turn at a particular junction - even at 5 kph. I can only presume that everyone else is driving on tyres inflated like balloons, because I rarely hear other vehicles make so much noise.

PPS. My tyres are 5 years old and still have plenty of tread. (Crap for stopping, but still have plenty of tread.)

  3. I keep it at the same pressure as the tyres on the pick-up - 30 psi.

I have never had to change a wheel yet - touch wood - but I keep a pressure gauge in the pick-up, so would check it after changing the wheel.

I think your logic is correct - the tyre would be at a slightly higher pressure when fitted to the vehicle because of the load, hence the need for a pressure gauge.

A bigger effect, I believe, is temperature. I don't check tyre pressures if the tyre is hot as the pressure would read high. I think you should check the pressure when the tyre is cold but, as most people check the pressure at a garage, how do they get there without the tyres getting hot?

    Life's a b1tch and then you die. :o

  4. Are you aware that Ya Mo is a legendary character with about as much historical fact surrounding her as an Old Testament minor player? Most of the "facts" attributed to her legend were gleaned from a 1960s nation-building propaganda film, which helped to justify Thailand (Siam's) claim over Isaan during a period of Lao ethnic-identity resurgence. The statue in Khorat that everyone pays tribute to was constructed after that film, Before that no-one gave a hoot about Ya Mo as they'd mostly never heard her name. And by the way, she is attributed with defeating the Lao army, not Burmese as you insinuate. :o

Plachon, I am indeed aware that Ya Mo is attributed to defeating the Lao army (not the Burmese), however when making my post I didn't feel the need to differentiate between Taksin the great defeating the Burmese and Ya Mo defeating the Lao, it just didn't seem to be germane to the point that I was making at the time :D Since you seem to be the kind to pick nits, then perhaps I should educate you a little as well my friend :D There has been a monument to Ya Mo in central Korat city since the mid 1930's (not the 1960's as you seem to infer) and there have been monuments to Ya Mo in the countryside since the 1800's! Ya Mo (Suranaree) was very much a real person, although the stories about her I am certain have been greatly embellished over the past 200 years. She was more of a Mahta Hari type than the warrior princess that she so often gets potrayed as, but to compare her to some fictional biblical character of 2500 years ago shows your lack of objectivity on this subject. I am not certain why you would have this bias against Lady Mo, unless perhaps you are of Laotian ancestry and are embarrassed that a woman from Korat played a key role in the defeat of the Lao Army 200 years ago :D

Pity. This was getting really interesting, but 3 weeks later and still no retort.

  5. VENUS VISION

A sincere letter to Thailand's future generation

    By Veena Thupkrajae

...If you wonder why no one has revamped our education system yet, it is probably because no one up there sees that there is a problem...

The people "up there" have enough problems with all those snouts fighting to get into the trough. An educated populace would give them another, called "a revolution".

  6. Can I add some fuel to the fire by reminding that PAD always complained about undercover agents hiding among them? They exposed them occasionally, but who is to say that many slipped through and were able to do whatever they wanted?

Planting fake evidence against PAD is a perfectly good reason to inflitrate its camp.

:D I was going to ask TAWP for a link to where people were "cheering grenading of yellows" :o , but your post is much more ridiculous. Pass the tin foil hat.

How about you read some of Koo82's posts, she stated it as recent as within the last 3 weeks.

    I don't remember which post.

I only know that camping inside the Government House is illegal. Leaders must go to jail.

So far nothing has been done with PAD leaders yet. This case is complicated and may take 15 years to investigate.

I think this is the one that TAWP was referring to: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Thaksin-Supp...t&p=2423774

Very naughty Koo - nobody had to bomb anybody. I see also that there are a lot of posts again trying to compare how many acts of violence were done by the Reds compared to the Yellows. What's the point? They've each got their hard core nutters and they've each got their nice grannies, mums and kids.

What proportion these types make up the two groups has no bearing whatsoever on which group's ideology is best for Thailand.

PS. Koo, what is a "shesh"? :D

  7. I was doing OK up until this morning when things fell off drastically.

    Still OK to BKK.

    I'm on MaxNet Indy 3072/512

It would be great if we could get lots of users to do the exact same Speedtest.net checks to the same servers at the same time, e.g. the checks could be done at 3pm Thai time to, say, Bangkok, London, New York and San Francisco.

Then we could post the results for comparison. Here's mine for 1 am Thai time on Maxnet Indy 4 mbps.

A crucial year, when foul is fair and fair is foul

    By: THITINAN PONGSUDHIRAK

...Representing Establishment forces, the holy trinity of military, bureaucracy and monarchy have returned to the apex of Thai society at the expense of parliament, parties and politicians, as democratic rule is subsumed under Establishment preferences....

The writer is Director of the Institute of Security and International Studies, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University.

    Sums it up nicely, unfortunately.

  9. Don't blame Microsoft or any other provider for your own mistake NOT to backup your messages.

Sniffdog, perhaps you can let us know how to backup Hotmail messages onto your own computer. I have 10 years of messages that maybe I should not entrust to Microsoft to look after.

    Thanks

You could try using Thunderbird to do it:

If you run Thunderbird as your email client, there's a webmail extension that allows you to download and send email through your webmail accounts, including Hotmail.
    http://ask-leo.com/how_do_i_download_my_ho...y_computer.html

I tried Thunderbird after M$ said they would stop Outlook Express users picking up their Hotmail emails - they were "retiring" the "DAV protocol" that OE uses, and then they changed their minds. :o It worked for me.

I wrote a long procedure for doing it here: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Windows-Live...t&p=2138722

    It's complicated, but should work.

  10. ...Jetset, ABS will not do its job, it doesn't really have any - it's YOUR job to steer the vehicle out of the way, not ABS's. ...

I said I would steer straight. I did not say anything about ABS steering my pick-up.

... The actual braking distance actually increases, so if you don't steer you'll have HIGHER chance of not stopping in time in an ABS equipped vehicle.
On high-traction surfaces such as bitumen, or concrete, many (though not all) ABS-equipped cars are able to attain braking distances better (i.e. shorter) than those that would be easily possible without the benefit of ABS.
