Wai not use an agent? Less chance of passport being misplaced and then being ghosted by said agent. -

OP is stuck using an agent if he wants to extend his current stay. Agent handled the 800K and withdrew the cash immediately after getting the statement, and he is registered in a different province than where he lives. He cannot do the extension himself. -

I have an online account with ID.me, and will use a Thailand address. Intend to apply online. I plan to have benefits deposited in Navy Federal in the US, so no IDD 1199, use SA 1199? Will they need marriage certificate, certified or otherwise? Thai wife, not claiming any benefits. I will have no salary or employment at least two years prior to application. No other papers?.....birth certificate? DD214? Sounds like a simple, efficient process.

The Angels. Early 60's. By waste of money, I meant upon return. Retirement option is incredibly easy, minimal documentation. Getting the bank account set up is the difficult part. Just get your papers together and make an online appointment with immigration. In and out in less'n an hour. -

He's going to Laos, or the US for months? Her side would be: My boyfriend's back, and you're gonna be in trouble (Hey-la-day-la my boyfriend's back) When you see him comin' better cut out on the double (Hey-la-day-la my boyfriend's back) You used an agent. Waste of money now that you know the rules. Assume you have a bank account in your name only. Before you leave, SWIFT 800k into your account. Leave for the US without a re-entry permit, allow your visa extension to expire. If staying with your girlfriend, have her register her house/apartment with immigration so she can do your TM-30 online when you return. Return on a one-way ticket, prepare to buy a $14 booking to show onward travel, enter on the new 60-day waiver, apply for non-O based on retirement. -
This is true of the current remittance policy change that came into effect in January. But most posters seem to be reducing their remittances, and income prior to Jan 2024 still falls under the old rule. The NEW legislation for worldwide income won't be approved for a while, and the regulation "should" come into force Jan 2025 at the earliest. In that case tax filings would be due March 2026 on 2025 global income. I'm assuming D-day will be June 27, 2025 to avoid tax residency and global income being taxed.

I've read about it being done on various blogs and travel forums. If heading to China, need a visa from the embassy or consulate in Chiang Mai. There's an immigration office on the riverside road near the port in Chiang Saen where you stamp out prior to boarding. Passage would be arranged through one of the shipping companies located at the port. Trip upriver on the Mekong (Lancang in China) takes about three days when river level is high enough. You stay on the boat in your cabin when the boat docks at night or when offloading cargo enroute, so don't need Myanmar or Laos transit visas. I believe you get stamped in to China at a cargo port immigration office 10-15 km south of Jinghong. Don't know how the covids affected this, but I've read the option is still available. Had wanted to take the boat, but always wound up passing thru Laos via bicycle.

Have you found the Manila office helpful? I sent them a message May 08 asking for a list of documents required to apply for benefits. Got the answer today, June 11. You will need to contact the US Post if you are outside the US to get the documents needed. The documents will be discussed during the interview.

I went through this last month. No US phone. Select the video interview and have the requested documents ready. I logged onto the system and had to wait about 30 minutes. The timer first said 18-minute wait time, which would reset occasionally. Have some reading material handy. Interview was fast and easy.

Will this be like contributing to upgrades at the local temple, where your name will be inscribed on a roof tile or pillar depending on the size of the donation? I'm just a little fish, so I wouldn't have the honor of having my name engraved on the back of a government official's new watch, but perhaps my small contribution would merit my name memorialized for posteriorty on the underside of a submarine toilet seat.

You are correct!!!! I found false information on a couple legal websites. (yes, i googled it) But as for foreigners, they only came under that provision after spending 5 uninterrupted years working in China, changed to six years in 2019 using the 183-day rule. *leaving China for 30 days RESETS the 6-year clock* My time working there, between 2009-2022, this never came up. Possibly because I took extended breaks outside the country. The topic never came up when visiting tax office for official tax receipts needed for SWIFT. Interestingly, this is the first year that the new Chinese law has affect on expats. With Cambodia moving to global income taxation this year, it appears nowhere is safe.

BKK Bank Anti American
NoDisplayName replied to nitehawk42's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Yes, special rules. Most foreign banks must provide data on US citizen clients or risk sanctions or seizures. This is why any time an American waddles into a bank anywhere in the world to open an account, they are given an IRS reporting form to fill out as the first order of business. Fun fact! This was true of China until a few years ago. Last three banks I opened accounts with did not require the IRS form.
