My post was about getting a Thai driving license. The clerk at DLT Chatuchak wanted either the immigration residency certificate or the notarized embassy residency affidavit. I whipped out my no-longer-needed notarized embassy marital status affidavit and asked if it would suffice, as it had my local address. The clerk accepted that as proof of residence. Same thing happens in the banks. They ask for the "embassy letter", but (Bangkok Bank) will accept the marital status affidavit as it has the pertinent information and a government seal.

Sometimes, if you ask,........ DLT Chatuchak accepted my US embassy "affidavit of single status" listing passport number and local address in lieu of the standard two documents listed. Seems the clerk simply wants something with a fancy stamp. If you go this route, get the marriage certificate first. DLT will keep the original.

Ask your landlord if the apartment is registered on the Sec.38 app. If so, he can do your TM30 in a couple minutes, or can give you the login information to do it yourself. If not, and you think you'll need a TM30 for extensions, you may be able to register the apartment as possessor uploading the rental contract and your passport.

Well, here's where it gets interesting. Let's say Billy Bob hits a curb at speed and flies over his handlebars, smacking his noggin on a light pole and cracking his skull. Let's say he survives, barely, but needs multiple major surgeries, extensive time on a ventilator in ICU, and perhaps years of physical therapy. Billy Bob was a wee bit tipsy, he didn't wear a helmet, and he had no insurance. Heck, while we're at it, his license was suspended two years ago, but the police always looked the other way. Somebody has to pay for all this. There's the ambulance and police, paid for with tax bahts, but this takes away from deserving victims. The hospital and the doctors and the medicines and the surgeries and the therapy? It either comes out of the pockets of law-abiding insurance holders through higher premiums (if insurance come into this at all), or increased taxes, or the lost opportunities to use collected taxes for the public good. There's potential psychological trauma caused to others, or damage to other property to consider as well. So in a civilized society rights are not absolute. They come with responsibilities as well. If we're gonna let Billy Bob ride without a helmet, I'm fine with that, but no public services or insurance payout when he crashes. He's on his own. No helmet? Send the street sweepers to push him into the gutter.

Ah. Sorry, my reading comprehension failed. Had to re-read the original post. You live here now (long term visa?) and have a Thai bank account which you used to transfer 2500 baht to some guy on the Facebooks? Or maybe deposited cash into some guy's account either at a teller or ATM?

I'm guessing you sent cash via Western Union to a dude on Facebook? Nothing you can do. Next time book with an established booking site like Booking.com or Agoda where you have some recourse, and use a credit card. And whatever you do, don't make agreements with the renter outside of the booking site.

You should check those Lazada/Shopee ads before you post. The ads typically give a half dozen options - 5 colors of helmet, or a replacement face shield (or stick-on cat ears). The face shield is 39 baht, the helmets will be 149. The lowest price shows up on the search page.
