  1. They confirmed during an initial test that "some" steel was "substandard." That is all. No information on how it was substandard or whether it would affect the structural integrity. When the findings of these tests are released, it's possible that the problem with these particular bits of steel may be mostly cosmetic. It's only just started. This is just the first testing result. They have to test more steel, test the concrete, go over all the inspection reports submitted throughout the building process, review the blueprints to confirm the building would meet the earthquake code, review the geological survey to confirm the site was suitable for high-rise construction, and and and............... They were doing interior and facade work. Read elsewhere that the building structure was completed almost a year ago. I believe the finance minister running the investigation called for it to be completed within seven days. That's ridiculous. They'll barely have time to schedule committee meetings to conduct studies to select participants to form a group to select representatives to coordinate planning a subcommittee to organize a fact-finding visit to the site by then. I expect this will be a year-long process. Probably maybe. The collapse appeared to start from the top. Could that have anything to do with a large crane with counterweights mounted on the top level?
  2. The only "error" was that a judge knew he was a gangbanger but let him stay anyway. His homies back in da hood might poop a cap in his crown. Mr. Abrego Garcia had “withholding from removal” status, which means he was the subject of a deportation order but was allowed to stay in the United States because of the likelihood that he could be harmed if he returned to El Salvador. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/01/us/politics/maryland-man-deportation-error-el-salvador.html According to Abrego-Garcia's attorneys, in 2019, a confidential informant "had advised that Abrego Garcia was an active member" of the gang MS-13. He later filed an I-589 application for asylum and although Abrego-Garcia was found removable, an immigration judge "granted him withholding of removal to El Salvador." https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/ice-admits-administrative-error-after-maryland-man-el/story?id=120359991
  3. And now it is confirmed. Both samples originated from the same company, which had previously been ordered to cease production by the Thai Industrial Standards Institute in December. Steel samples fail tests after building collapse in Thailand https://thethaiger.com/news/bangkok/steel-samples-fail-tests-after-building-collapse-in-thailand The Industry Ministry sent 28 steel pieces from the wreckage to the Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand for inspection, categorised into seven samples: 32mm, 25mm, 20mm, 16mm, and 12mm deformed steel bars, wire ropes, and steel bars. The inspection took more than six hours and found that two samples were substandard, coming from the same company whose factory in Rayong province was ordered to close in December last year, according to the ministry’s working team. Two substandard steel samples linked to collapsed Bangkok building https://www.nationthailand.com/news/general/40048162 However, she noted that these samples are not sufficient to conclude that they were responsible for the building collapse. The Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) will collect more samples and inspect the factory to determine whether it has illegally produced or transported steel.
  4. That was the poorly-translated headline. That's not what was said in the article. Some dude in a suit said a thing. Suspicions. Looking into it. What did the watchdog say? What exactly is "potential corner-cutting"? Potential, or proven, and in what area? If they had found sub-standard steel being used, they probably would have mentioned that.
  5. Uh, no.........responded to the salient point, where you stated "There’s no such thing as ‘the best people for the job’." Of course "There’s always a range of skills, qualifications and experiences that suit jobs and different candidates have a different balance of these." That means people not same-same. Not every individual has the same abilities and skills. Thus not everyone is equally capable. That's why we hire the best, not those that merely check the tickboxes for equity and diversity. Shirley, you understand that much! When you need brain surgery, do you look for the best, most experienced doctor you can afford irregardless of race, religion, or sexual proclivities? Or do you limit your choices to doctors that pass your woke filter set to "non-binary, lesbian, Muslim, transsexual, deaf. paraplegic of colour" because their "lived experiences" are so much more important that their surgical skills?
  6. Other posters were implying they were agents of XI sent to destroy evidence of CCP overlords evilness. But they were merely employees of Ital-thai preserving documents that would likely be destroyed during cleanup. Dunno, maybe they needed some employee/work roster files to pay salaries or benefits to deceased or injured workers. They may have had police permission to enter but not remove files. You think the companies involved would store vital documentation ON SITE that would show negligence? They're supposed to be corrupt, not stupid.
  7. Of course they do. (which bank?) At Bangkok Bank and Krungsri, simply take your passbook(s) to the teller for the certificate. Takes 5 minutes to prepare. Are your remittances taxable here? If not assessable, you don't declare them. Check your DTA to confirm. Just go online, make an account, fill in your personal information, then fill in your PD 91 with bank tax info. Upload a photo of the bank certificate. Whole process takes 15 minutes at most. The online system will do the computations for you and will fill out the exemptions page as well. The online form is in Thai only. Other posters use chrome to translate. I cut 'n paste into google translate. Ah, you have a Thai friend who can help. https://efiling.rd.go.th/rd-efiling-web/login As long as you're going to the trouble, if you were a tax resident in prior years, you can do late returns for 2022 and 2023 and get refunds if you provide bank certificates (also available from your bank free of charge). Will cost you one 200-baht late filing fee. If you're coming up on the deadline and don't have the bank letter, go ahead and e-file. It will be accepted, but you'll get a text message in a week or so requesting the paper. You can upload later, at a different webpage. https://efiling.rd.go.th/rd-efiling-web/authen/MTA2
  8. You've already made up your mind. No investigation needed?
  9. On Sunday, Bangkok Metropolitan Police Major General Noppasin Poonsawat, the deputy commissioner of the force, was quoted by the Bangkok Post as saying officers had questioned four Chinese men who were found removing 32 files from containers behind the collapsed building. The men reportedly had work permits for the site and were employed by a company under the auspices of the Italian-Thai Development firm, Noppasin said. Noppasin was quoted by the Post as saying the files contained documents with information about contractors and sub-contractors on the project, and that the police had seized the files and then released the Chinese men after questioning. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/thailand-earthquake-myanmar-deaths-bangkok-building-collapse-investigation/
  10. We don't know that yet. Could be design flaw, could be corruption, could be poor site selection, could be many things. There's even a slight chance it was an unknowable/unpredictable event, and nobody is to blame. But many posters are already assessing blame. It's the CCP, they're the culprits! Surprised they aren't blaming Putin or Trump.
  11. I'd look into the Italian engineers. There is precedent.,,,,,,,
  12. Everybody is the same (unless tickbox needed). We're all interchangeable (unless tickbox needed). We're all winners if we just believe!
  13. Not okay with racism/sexism, but support racism/sexism to fight 'perceived' racism/sexism, resulting in.......more racism/sexism. "We had to destroy the equality in order to save the equality, sir!"
  14. "Tabletop" construction no exist. They have these, but likely used computers.
  15. You keep saying that. I done googled it, and can't find "tabletop" or similar phrasing in relation to earthquake resistance standards. Could be everything about the construction was fine, from the design to materials to construction to inspection. Who approved the site? And who owned/controlled the land before it was purchased for the project? Could be whoever did, or didn't, do a site evaluation finding the location suitable for building a tall structure on a portion of Bangkok prone to turning to mush in response to tectonic activity......
  16. CREC or CRCC? Conflicting reports. https://www.crecg.com/zgztywz/index/index.html https://english.crcc.cn/ **EDIT** Appears to be a subsidiary of CREC China Railway Number 10 Engineering Group Company is not CRCC. A backbone enterprise of China Railway Engineering Corporation, which is one of the World Top 500, China Railway No.10 Engineering Group Co., Ltd. is a super-large state-held cross-industry, transnational construction corporation, mainly specializing in contracting architectural engineering. https://www.devex.com/organizations/china-railway-no-10-engineering-group-co-ltd-100364 It makes a difference when assigning blame.
  17. CREC? From the other thread, Italian-Thai Joint Venture (ITD-CRCC) is responsible for reconstructing the collapsed State Audit Office (SAI) building Two separate entities. By revenue, CREC is the largest construction company in the world in the 2015 Engineering News-Record "Top 225 Global Contractors".[2] In 2016, CRECG ranks in the 57th place among Fortune Global 500 Enterprises[3] and the 7th place among Top 500 Chinese Enterprises. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Railway_Group_Limited China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (abbreviated CRCC) is a listed construction enterprise based in Beijing, China, that was the second largest construction and engineering company in the world by revenue in 2014. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Railway_Construction_Corporation
  18. Are you sure about that being a "table top" building, and that there is no core? The outside may or may not look similar while partially constructed. Anyway, CRCC does have some expertise building tall structures. CRCC Completes World's Tallest Hotel Building Project https://english.crcc.cn/art/2024/12/19/art_441_5035144.html And this appears to be an under construction photo.
  19. Depends what latitude they had. Likely none on construction materials, particularly steel and concrete. More discretion perhaps, although would still have to be approved, for using different materials for the cladding or interior flooring, or the thickness of the drywall room dividers. Possibly might have substituted gold colored toilets in place of solid gold fittings in the executive washrooms.
  20. You're okay with racism and sexism and other 'isms, as long as your voting block gets the goodies?
  21. Snow White? Just look at what they've done to Star Wars and Doctor Who/They/Them!
  22. Dunno....maybe protect them from local authorities destroying the evidence that building plans were followed and approved materials were used in construction?
  23. That's a lovely photo! What does it mean? Are you a structural engineer? What do you know of building design standards? Do you know for a fact that is against code? If that is NOT normal/standard construction, then is that what the plans called for? If so, who designed the building, who certified the plans, who approved it? Did the construction joint venture build what was called for in the contract? As long as approved materials were used......... The government had their own inspectors on site throughout the process. They had the blueprints, they saw the same planks of wood holding up the building. They approved construction up to this point.
