  1. Yes, thanks Mario.

Going off topic a little, it appears that you can notify of change of address by registered post,

submitting a TM30 signed by the person to whom rent is paid, and the usual photocopies of relevant passport pages. Would anyone be able verify that for me, please?

    Thx, AA

That is not your requirement - that is the owner of the accommodation requirement to report foreigners.

House holder, owner or dwelling occupier

or hotel manager who accommodates the alien who

has permission to stay in the Kingdom temporarily,

must report to the ofųcer within 24 hours from

the time the alien was accommodated by using

    TM.30 form.

The TM30 form mentions as a requirement for businesses however some lady in immigration office tried to to tell me my wife she had to fill in the form and it had to be submitted to immigration office..and no she could not submit at police station per the TM30 if no immigration office in ones locale.

Shame the immigration people ( and the consuls/embassies) are not all on the same page regarding the rules and regs as stated in brochures and police notices. ah well....TIT

  2. I would have thought the exact opposite...

Both methods are digital, so I would not expect any noticeable difference if it is simple audio, HDMI 1.3+ is superior to TOSLINK (optic), it has greater bandwidth capabilities.

But it depends a lot on the sound format, if it is Dolby 7.1, DTS etc then this could only be transferred by HDMI, so I would say in this case HDMI should be the superior one.

The limiting factor with multimode fibre is usually the attenuation caused by poor quality fibre, reflection, dirty or marred contact surfaces in couplers ,misalignment of couplers, whether led or laser emitters, distance etc ..

...newer MM fibres can handle greater ie more than adequate bandwidth using lasers rather than LEDs. over the short distances for home entertainment applications.

Having said all that would stick with copper wire....HDMI ,coax, Cat 6 ,whatever....smile.png

  3. yes, i have tried it but it does not really work for me...i seem to sweat everywhere else also.......

Maybe try Potassium alum..available by the kilo (90bt/kilo)? in most mom and pop hardware stores. Been using it for years..don't stop the sweat but kills the odor causing bacteria..great for treatment of most skin problems too including mosquito bites ( stops the itching in minutes) Also a water clarifyer......

Just wet a chunk and voila....might want to rub the chunk on cement or something to smooth it out otherwise maybe scratch..

  4. not a recommendation just experience:

Bought a 2 door standard Y2K Mazda Fighter B250 in 2005 for 298kbt with only 11k on the clock and still smelt new....from a small dealer in Phuket.

Now has 168k on the clock.

What have I had fixed? ( most work done at Firestone shop)

Nothing engine wise except for oil changes

New mid point transmission universal joint 1200bt?

    New brake master cylinder 800bt?

    New Clutch slave cylinder 500bt?

1 new front disk and pads ( never heard the tell tale so scored to shit below skim limit) 1200bt?

    two new batteries

Two sets of tyres 9600bt each set ( Goodrich)

Replaced rear end rubber bushes on springs and shocks less than 1kbt Due for new shocks all round now methinks

Replaced rubber bushes in front wishbones last week 1200baht

Both electric window switches Drivers was 4000bt, passenger 2000bt..AAAH!

Replaced tailgate handle as I broke it trying to open when bed full of sand. 3000bt I think.

Used it while building our house, carried everything from roof tiles to bricks, cement etc.

Steering very light when loaded down but engine performed well even getting up the hill to our house site.

Now used for carting rubber on the farm

In short very satisfied..a great work horse considering my abuse of the vehicle..in retrospect would have bought a 4WD though

It is the shop now to get a full cosmetic repaint and dent job courtesy of 1st class insurance .....prior to selling..... whenever the fricking 3.2 4x4 BT50 is available, maybe go Isuzu or Vigo though!!smile.png

You should be able to pick up a similar vehicle for around 150k methinks although the ks would be high perhaps. Think diesels in general are all but indestructible?

  5. You can buy one of those rechargeable electric tennis rackets for mozzies -only 90 baht

it's great fun sweeping it around amongst a bunch of them and hearing the sparks fly off as they are cooked

    laugh.png

I LOVE them, not only to fry mozzies but ...

Well, lets say it this way, my son hates them cheesy.gif

555 Great for a wet dog noses too!!!Yes I am a sicky......Keep 'em away from your TV and computer etc though...I f.ked my SILs TV (CRT type) a couple of years back.....doh!...lol

  6. Plenty of wine and spirits on sale in Bangkok. No need to bring from the UK.

High Import duty though! makes a mediocre cheap wine, quite expensive.

Plato plonk is very good - and available here in Thailand

    After you! biggrin.png

duty free savings??..ok one time it was worth while but either the prices have gone up or the retailer margins have....just not worth the hassle for saving a couple of hundred baht when flying.

Good Aussie red in Thailand is the same price within cents of that in Australia...seen similar labels in duty free at similar prices.

Best duty free deals on hard liquor seems to be at Thai borders ... Langkawi ( a duty free Malaysian island) customs is hot and cold on tourists ..... there are a lot of black bags of stuff coming off the ferries to be stashed in the customs backroom....TIT

As an aside .....duty free cosmetics on board airlines are very well priced..best deal going ,one assumes they are the genuine article.

  7. I saw one once but it was left handed.

555 leather handled? assume OP means the grip? t..not hard to install another wooden handle is it? Lots of fibre composite handled tools out there too. Think wooden handles work pretty well on cricket bats too?

I have three mattock heads, two hammer heads and one machete thingy head floating around though..easier to buy a new one because I am such a busy bee...tongue.png

  8. Yep, my late-model 5.9L Dodge Cummins diesel did the same thing, and it behaved like the throttle is stuck open for a second. I was told this is purposely programmed into the engine ECU to prevent turbo "bark" which can be damaging airflow reversal through the turbo. This happens when the throttle is released too quickly and turbo slows down too fast to keep the air flowing in the appropriate direction.

ok good stuff thanks ..turbo "bark" hugh...my old truck don't have a turbo so that's probably it. Thanks for prompt reply all.

  9. A lesson for all reading here. Switch OFF the main breaker before doing ANY electrical stuff here, no matter how small or big the appliance.

    RIP brother. Trans

gotta agree..won't even change a light bulb without throwing the breaker.....I wired our house ..lol.....and yes we have GFIs......saw a guy yesterday up a pole outside a new restaurant barefoot.....presumably borrowing a few volts.....gross stupidity.

There is a utility pole with a disconnected meter in our local market ,the wires have a bit of folded tape on the ends at head height....if the PEA don't care why would a local sparky...sad.

  10. this happens every place in the world...must admit to doing it myself for that 10 minute errand.....the usual thing is to park your car to stop egress of the offending vehicle for an hour or so..won't stop it for others but the short term revenge factor may help...of course it may get keyed....cheesy.gif

When I was a kid my dad used to have a hissy fit at people turning round in our driveway in the UK......very entertaining.

My wife won't let me park in font/beside food stalls ....she says it is because of the exhaust fumes.....then later when she thinks I am not looking the plastic bag goes out the window......smile.png

  11. This looks like a good recipe but it calls for peanut oil (which you don't see in Thailand):

    http://www.slate.com..._your_own_.html

555...have a look in your local cooking oil aisle mate...we cook with peanut oil....smile.png

gross cheap chemical peanut butter, cheese and jelly sandwiches and a big glass of chocolate milk......yum.....biggrin.png

right up there with "Perishers" inch thick ketchup sandwiches....

  12. Assume your transmitting composite analog and digital audio video? do you mean with an in line balun..bit ungainly methinks? Could you not just buy baluns..probably available in wall plates too?

Will change to HDMI converters down the track do not want to change the wall plates out. Do not require balun just a Cat 6 Patch cable joined to a RCA cable does the trick for video and audio.

Ok must be out of touch....that is possible?....

If all your content is digital have you considered wireless LAN .

MPEG 4 HDTV is what?.... about 8-10Mbs? ..A WLAN used to be about 11Mbs..probably up around 50 now..if I could be bothered to google....

HDMI can be transported over Ethernet also.

    anyways ....have fun ...smile.png

Most is analogue. I think it will be years down the track before I changed all over to digital.

I tried to use wireless for the young fellas room so he could whatch movies off the network, it did not work so well kept on buffering. Have since used hard wire with no problems. Also have 2 x internet points in nearly every room in the house and too 3 locations around the house running through a 100meg switch. I will try wireless again have just brought one of those mini android comptuers for $70 will see what it can do when I get a chance.

My network is a mess. Will have to hire a Geek to sort it out one day the young fella is only 5.

Empathies mate....had just finished Cat 5 wiring for my boys' computers in our house in Oz .......sweating and swearing... covered in itching fibreglass, gyproc etc not to mention setting up MS home fricking network......my neighbor was a MS certified guy and spent hours trying to do it without success..managed it myself somehow in the end .....then I found out how cheap WIFI was....dugh.

...just thinking when a Jap 6 transistor radio under the blankets was entertainment enough..always had a flashing display on my VCR too!.....lol

I too have just bought a cheapy Android clone primarily as an e-reader... mind blowing what stuff does eh?

  13. probably better to buy one before you come...

..a timely post as am looking to buy two e reading tools...got into analysis paralysis stage on google but think I will go for the tablet .....more bang for the buck and colour for mags etc...also for a child more flexibility...

the only downside it seems ... is the battery life of a tablet is low vs e reader and maybe the screen being anti glare on an e reader may be advantageous to some?

be ware also that some e readers limit you to their own download sites.....ie no freebies

The non-light emitting screens of the kindle are far less fatiguing (damaging?) for your eyes than tablet screens.

maybe but like the ability to read outside at night..can control the intensity easily..

Probably no worse than sitting in front of a PC or TV as most of us spend/t our lives?

  14. Just finished Tale of Two Cities and Oliver Twist..great stuff .....see some similarities to Les Miserables.....

Very depressing to read of the attitude of the upper classes/haves to the proles..methinks it still exists...sort of reminds me of the arrogance of some foreigners in Thailand...lol

Also.... Call of the Wild...what great doggy story!

  15. 5555..Lots of things to worry about ...run out of beer , run out of cigs, run out of steam.

Don't understand your poll...to what end..is it raining and you are bored?

Here it has just started raining again..and I am bored and very worried about running out of scotch.

Count me GOM...... I am an old silver spoon-er, lazy, apathetic, procrastinator with beautiful half Chinese/half my age Hi So independently wealthy ....yadda yadda yadda and she washes my ....

    Have a good one mate...biggrin.png

Think I will go back to the "Do you live in Thailand" pissing contest now.....naaa bugger it.... read me book instead

    What a strange person!

Strange? Of course I am strange, it is a prerequisite to be on a social network rambling on about stuff ..drop over to FB if ya wanna see strange. ...

.....beats some of the other epithets i guess

  17. Hi all: any updates on Thai e-books. I am all googled out......Tried Ookbee and B2S...maybe it is me but not easy to navigate very frustrating send you all over the place.

What I am looking for is something like Goodreads.com for Thai language books

    thx

  18. Interesting topic thanks......

when I first arrived in Thailand one of my first observations while indulging in the usual activities was that there were what appeared to be, two facial feature types, one being more Inuit like and the other more European ( finer features, narrower nose etc) but without the grey skin....some old stager suggested that the more Inuit like were mostly from up north.

Same applies to the northern Chinese which would appear to supports the Mongol theories.

So that raises the question of why the difference?....a different migration or?

Wonder why the northern Thai hill tribe people look Peruvian ? Even to some of their dress....?

It does seem that some of the more southerly Thais have finer features, bone structure etc.....more so the ladies. ?

When I first met curly haired wife, thought she looked somewhat Malato.......which might support an Olmec to Asia migration.

    Heady stuff hugh...

Trying to wade through Origin of the Species right now......don't suppose it will help..lol

  19. Wet-suit booties might be another option for you, as used by body/boogie boarders. The better styles have rubber, ripple soles (for walking over sharp rocks and shells).

Not sure how they would stand up to exposure to what you're spraying but I'm sure some of the guys who hang out around the coast might be able to give you the drum.

I have a pair of generic Reef Runners I used to use for mast climbing..bit like wet suit booties except not all rubber. No good for farm work though.

Surprised no one is using Blundstones..not even Jim?

  20. There is not to much visable smoke when using the smoker, for the air output we simple used the holes that were already on the barrel, and at the lower end was added 4 air in-takes. The main one being the ball valve which we always point in the direction of the pervailing wind, with one basket of about 5 pounds of charcoal will hold a temperature of 225 degrees for 8-10 hours and at the last couple of hours the temp will drop to 200o.

As long as it smokes good, I will not worry about the smoke, and it works great!.

I have never smoked fish, but it would be possible, look up on the internet if fish smoking, recommends for a hot smoke or cold smoke. for a cold smoke we would take out the coal basket and put in a hot plate on which we would burn the water soaked wood chips.

    Cheers:smile.png

The BBQ chicken lady in our market uses a big Chinese egg pot upright with the chicken in frames around the inside edge and charcoal in the bottom with a bit of tin on top...don't see any air intake holes though?

Think it would work as a smoker too...using those sandwich with handle type frames . Thai version of a Weber?

Maybe using an egg pot as a horno liner would work too? Might get through three or four before you manage to cut the chimney hole though without it breaking.lol

  21. Wow its great to hear all your replies.I have been in Thailand 5 years and retired long ago and now on retirement visa. Got married 2yrs ago to a village lady and we are so happy together both being country types .She has a part of the farm---12rai---left to her when parents died and the 12rai was her share.I was excited about working on the farm and helping the rest of the family with theirs.NOW------- As I have a retirement visa, and being a farang I have been told that I am to have nothing to do with agriculture in Thailand and cannot do any sort of work on the farm------- even my wifes where i am not working for money just for the love and personal living off the land, yet here i am reading about all you lucky buggers enjoying the life that I crave.OK please tell me I am wrong---PLEASE------ Dougal

that's the law you can not work on the farm.

My dream for the moment is to find a real long handled shovel that doesn't bend like plastic when you stand on it. Been planting coconut for 3 days and digging with those little spades Thais use and it is killing me. Jim

555 I am on my second one of those tin can shovels..good for shoveling that is all. Had a fork that turned into a pretzel first time I used it. Now have a welded steel handled hole digger type spade which is what I use for all the bloody holes I am forever digging. Got used to it now,dig dig then hands and knees to take out the dirt. Actually it works out good as always sandstone rocks.

Thought about getting a local welder/ tool maker to knock up a wider version.

Still get through mattock handles like crazy wife says "I do it too strong" that's why they break....hmmm She also says that is why the starting gear on my brush cutter keeps disintegrating.

So not to completely hijack the thread ....plans? Well since I never really planned to be here....keep waking up in the morning or as AA says.."one day at a time"..ditched the Daytimer mentality long ago..bah.gif Would not change the life here..bit late for that anyways....
