I never said he souldnt. ^^ this is what I saaid. i just find it very perplexing that outwardly logical seeming people by day are really superstitous and illogical by night. how do they balance the inevitable internal conflict inside?

i have a thai 'friend', we will call him Aroon. Now Aroon is a smart guy. he has a good job, very well paid (and I mean that), big house, hot wife etc and he visits the fortune teller regularly. His job requires him to be an extremely logical person by day but by night he is off seeking wisdom and guidance by some old woman at the bottom of his soi. it amazes me how seemingly smart people in high flying fields can still at middle age fall for fortune tellers. a few of his thai friends put him on the spot last week in my presence and they all told him that the fortuneteller was a conwoman. but he was adamant that if he listened to her that his life would be more prosperous and he will one day be mega rich. she told him that he must install a big bright light on the side of his house to ward off any bad spirits that may be around. Aroon immediately got in his car and proceeded to buy the biggest light the DIY store had in stock.. (as of yet I have been unable to confirm whether or not the DIY store is in fact owned by the fortuneteller..) how does one function in the 21st century with such archaic, dated beliefs? how can any rational person take people like this seriously? the mind boggles at how these people can get into positions of economic power with such regressive thought processes. each to their own and all that but come on. if one believes in a fortune teller than one must also believe that there could still be a santa claus. the two arent that much different really are they?

this kind of thing is an all too common occurrence here sadly, especially in the tourist hot spots. many local thais about who detest farang.

it seems that the majority of foreigners living in thailand (myself probably included) have some sort of mental malfunction. Whether it be alcoholism, depression, narcissim, chronic lying, excessive womanizing, drugs etc etc etc. Just last night I met a bloke in the pub who had been living here for 30 years and his brain was completely fried. he told me he lost everything gambling in cambodia about 10 years ago and had to sell the house that his mother left him back in Aus to repay his debts. his kids no longer talk to him. couple weeks ago i met a real character walking down the street. he was wielding some kind of a bat and approached me and made small talk. he gave off a really creepy vibe so i walked away. then he asked me where i was goin and did i want to go back to his house to meet his wife. I declined and carried on walking. i have had many such encounters over the years and its making me question. does Thailand attract losers or do people become losers when they have been here too long? over the years i have met countless what I would refer to as down and outs back home just existing here in Thailand. im not exactly a winner myself but I pay my way, have no debts and have a good relationship with my kids. some of these guys ive met make me look like a saint in comparison???? so whats going on? are there any normal farangs living in Thailand or are they just few and far between??
