One of the things I loved about Thailand when I first came in 2011 was how the Thais are quite family orientated and how the small communities supported each other. It was very refreshing. The following year I met my wife. What a breath of fresh air she is compared to the plasticized women of my home country. I had been single for the previous 25 years before meeting her on Phi Phi and I had no intention of ever marrying again after a short marriage in the late 70's. Initially we opened a small pub & restaurant with 3 upstairs rooms to let on Koh Lanta. We married the following year. At this point in time we were travelling back and forth every 6 months for 6 months while I worked and then we returned to run the bar again for 6 months. She ran that for 5 years and we employed several family members who were not working at the time and left them there to look after things while we were away. She grew tired of the long hours at the pub ( and maybe me having too much fun ...lol...kidding I hope ) and let me know that she had always dreamt of having her own farm back in her home village. After hearing this 3 times over the following month I took it more seriously. We decided to reinvest in some land. The following year, 2019, we were free to start work on the farm. Wy wife's Mom was not feeling well so we came over to see her for the month of December. Mom was not doing well so my wife stayed to look after her and I returned back to work. Then Covid hit. Mom passed that summer, which meant no one was there to help my wife's sister, who is wheel chair bound. So the next 2 years were spent building the house, employing her brothers, sons, nephews and others who were now out of work in Bangkok and had returned back to the village ( Population 200 ). Me staying and working due to the travelling restrictions and then crazy quarantine requirements afterwards. In the winter of '22, once the house was completed, I decided only to work part time, and remotely, and finally came back over to see the house. They did a fantastic job and I was more than pleased. One thing led to another and we soon had a houseful. They say you marry the family along with your wife. I guess it's true. So, as a family, we are building up the farm so that the children will have something to work on when in the event that I may pass, doubtful but probable....lol. I'm proud of my last life project and wouldn't change a thing. Never been much of a "class" type guy, but I believe we live much better than a lot of our neighbors who depend on rice and rubber harvests. We always seem to manage, eat well and not wanting much for anything, although a few more beers per month wouldn't hurt.

I turn 70 next month. I married "my nurse" who is 18 years younger 10 years ago. We own 4 Rai in rural Ubon. We built a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom & 2 kitchen large rancher. We have a paid off 2014 Toyota pickup we bought new, 3 motor bikes, 3 dogs & 7 cats. My wife's 3 young adult children, daughters fiancée, 1 grandson, sister & nephew all living here with my wife and I. We have a small hobby farm with chickens & ducks and are just starting crayfish. We just get by on my $60,000 Baht per month but we all eat healthy and have a few beer from time to time.

Smoke signal: Suvarnabhumi sparks smoking rooms outrage
Ubonian Canadian replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I flew to Canada last summer via China & return via Japan. They had smoking rooms at both airports. They are enclosed with exhaust fans. No problems for non-smokers. Don't know why they have their panties in a knot over this. I have never heard a complaint anywhere, anytime. Leave the smokers alone, after a 12 hr. flight with babies crying a guy needs a smoke. -

5 Frenchmen arrested for running police checkpoint in Phuket

Yes, there was a lot of frog jumping going on. The other thing that has always bothered me is the people passing on the left on a single lane. One time on Koh Lanta it happened to us just as we were pulling over. The bike didn't see our turn signal as she was past the bumper. The driver stopped just in time but the girl hit the front bumper and fell over. We dusted her off and took her over to a restaurant for a soda. Her boyfriend came and they demanded $4000 baht for the scrapes on her bike. My Swedish friend had a house amongst the Muslim community so he agreed to pay. He then came to me for $2000 baht because I was the reason he was on the road as he was taking me to the recycle depot. I had a pub & restaurant at the time and gave my friends a break on prices. Once my "friend" started paying regular prices I didn't see him too much. Definitely not enough times for me to recoup my $2000. If I wouldn't of yelled at him to stop, as I saw the gal sneaking by, we would of probably run her and the bike over. Only Buddha knows what would have happened then. -

I'll be 70 in the Spring. My wife just turned 51. We have been married 10 years. We live in east Issan on 4 rai and we built a nice 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom and 2 kitchen house 5 years ago. All of it purchased by me. My wife had 4 kids before I met her. I paid 50,000 baht to her wonderful parents on the wedding day. This money just basically paid for the wedding. As you may have guessed, the family is dirt poor. My wife's parents both passed in the last 3 years, both at 70. We miss them very much. My wife's invalid, wheelchair bound, 50 year old sister and her 16 year old son, my wife's 24 year old son, 21 year old daughter, fiancée & grandson and 17 year old son all live with us. It takes all of us to run the farm that we started from scratch. One day it will be theirs. My advice to you young man, is to take your time. There is no need to marry so quickly, you have barely started living. It sounds like this could be your first love, which is easy to do over here. If she loves you, she will wait. As noted above, you do not just marry her, you marry the whole family. Trust me, you need lots of money. At 22 and recently graduated, I'm sure that's not the case with you unless your folks are prepared to pony up to your every whim. Get a grip, do your research on relationships in Thailand, THERE IS NO RUSH.
