  1. to assimilate = to become culturally like the rest of the country to integrate = to become part of the country but retaining your own culture Examples: A group of migrants moves to a country, starts practicing local religion (or appreciating local values), and starts speaking the language and celebrating their cultural holidays has assimilated. A group that retains their own values and traditions, but becomes part of the community/society has integrated.
  2. I think there is a difference. I feel completely integrated into Thai society, considering the roles I play in their society. (i.e. I fit into their society in key several roles; I ain't a tourist). However, I certainly don't think I can assimilate with their culture. I am still a farang at heart. ????
  3. I am not sure that negative representation is justified. Thais are typically very loud. The sex industry is part of local culture, so at least they are adopting the local norms a little. Not really sure what their appearance has to do with it.
  4. That's for sure. A rollercoaster ???? of experiences.
  5. Interesting, what do you get if you make an effort?
  6. Yeah, but to be fair when Asian go to the West, they generally don't assimilate. The create a China Town or Little India.
  7. I agree Not that I have ever felt like I was unwelcome, but I am sure the locals would not particularly like it if I bought a plot of land in their village, or started doing their jobs, or becamee mayor, for example. They do want us to remain foreigners forever, I think. But we are useful for spending money and teaching English, and otherwise tolerated.
  8. Oh <deleted>, does that mean I have assimilated, haha
  9. I wonder why that is.
  10. I feel the same way actually
  11. Hello, fellow foreigners. Just a poll about our assimilation with Thai culture. I couldn't add another question, but for discussion, I'd ask: do you think we should assimilate? And what does assimilation mean for you?
  12. I could see myself doing that, especially in old age.
  13. You're kidding, right? They are staring you in the face. Apple, for one (with 250% over last 5 years vs Bitcoin's 90%, lol) And plenty others too. But I am not gonna give you all my good stock tips, haha.
  14. For those who didn't start investing back then it's irrelevant. I started investing 5 years ago, so that's relevant to me and loads of boring, safer investments have beaten Bitcoin, easily. Over the next 5 years or 50 years who knows? From a risk to reward point of view, Bitcoin has sucked over the last 5 years, basically. You could loosely call it investing. And earlier that that, it was even more speculative and risky. A few people got lucky, pretty much summarizes it.
  15. Who knows what these far left extremists are up to. Bloody democrats.
  16. Sure, each to their own. I've been a nomad. Kinda wears thin after a while. Nice to "live" somewhere.
  17. Bitcoin is up 90% against the USD, if you look at the 5 year chart today. I could show you some very boring, low risk stocks that did far far better over the same timeframe.
  18. The girls down Pattaya better get their Listerine before it's all sold out.
  19. Oh well......next.
  20. It's probably best to live in Thailand half the year and in the West the other half. Why not have best of both?
