This is always what I've found most frustrating and even infuriating. If you are going to change the largely unwritten requirements to different or additional unwritten requirements why can't we make note of the change and follow the instructions the following year? Most of these documents are filed in duplicate for YEARS.

Another wholly insane thing is why documents are not pre-approved and archived. Passport, marriage certificate, etc.

Really, all that is needed for marriage application is KR2, proof of residence and money. The rest is just stupidity along with 90 day report.

I often offload anything complicated I can't deal with to the wife. Rather than me making a hash, giving the Thai person a headache wife just takes care of it. Sometimes she a bit annoyed when busy but I remind her if the cards were different and we were living in the United States I would be taking care of everything and more in addition to finances.

Wife is very supportive and even beginning to learn more about 90 day reports, visa extension packages, extension of stay nuances.

The money comes back and it's always to her. I think in addition to being Thai, she usually orders the meal and I'll just add some things at the end. We are in BKK, this isn't a farang pay thing but I know the attitude common. So, stay away from that

What Thailand has to offer is cheap tourist infrastructure, reasonable visa regime, cheap flights, travel hub both by air and land.

Thailand excels in availability and ease to set up short, medium term accomodation.

Thailand is warmer. Half of Vietnam weather not so pleasant in winter.

Friendly women with online network, agogo if that's what you are interested in, beer/hostess bars.

Hanoi is nothing much.

Vietnam I'd think is where you'll find good food and perhaps a bit of adventure. Thailand for cheap and chill holiday although Vietnam can move into this space quickly with the right attitude (long term visas, accomodation and floozies).

How much it's related to tourism I'm uncertain but I'm starting to see / hear Chinese returning to north central Bangkok. May be early retirees, long term visa holders, condo owners.

And let's not forget the announcement of the construction of Suvarnabhumi itself was greeted with the usual chorus of sneers. Thailand already had a perfectly good airport, and Only One's Needed. The runways were all going to sink and never be maintained. And it'd never be completed anyway. Maybe we should adopt a reasonable and less stupid mindset than usual and just wait and see. 'Course, that would spoil the fun and the piling on.

 

I'd argue it's basically the same devil may care lot of working class stiffs that have always visited. The ones that take a holiday out of entitlement and desire rather than what their finances dictate.
