  1. In the beginning I was very deferential to the idiots. I'm not yet to the point of trolling but I don't wear masks any more. I've always considered myself fairly culturally sensitive but we are to the point of moronic behavior

    notebooks on the table.

One electronic with a big apple logo on it.

And one old fashioned with paper and handwriting on that paper.

    I work this way.

Notebook, tablet, phone + A4 notepad and often smaller scratch paper.

I keep to-do lists on my phone, notebook and paper

Paper is very efficient in diagramming, sketching, thinking. Also, something in the notebook you'll be turning it off on repeatedly. Waste of time

The top picture is a monk wai. It shows deepest respect and humility. A wai to parents after a separation should really be thumbs along the bridge of the nose, IMO. A regular wai would be tip of fingers around the tip of the nose area. This is a rough guide. And knowing who and when to wai is something else. It can also be used to express simple gratitude.

I don't believe most Thais would ever be offended by a farang trying to wai. Of course Thailand has xenophobes like every country, but most people I interact with are nice and are polite.

Great post and I couldn't agree more. What psychopath would be angry with a foreigner because when they expressed themselves in greeting or cultural exchange it wasn't as perfect as a native son or daughter? Sorry, no.

The people that simply won't wai are self conscious, embarrassed, perplexed, lazy and self centered.

Speaking the language well and not wai'ing strikes me as even more problematic.

Decades ago I had a Khmer gf in the US. We went to a fancy big Khmer party. My new gf asked me if I knew how and when to wai and that it was important to her that I did so. That was in the US even.

So is doing it incorrectly, depending on social standing.

If farangs wish to Wai, it's up to them, as mentioned, to me, it looks stupid. Wai and then not even be able to communicate....

So, don't wave hello, shake hands..

Perhaps live in a cave. Perfect for cavemen

    yes they do.

    How very patronising......

I do not need to or do i care to understand how it all works. Having lived here for more than 24years and speaking the language it has no impact on my life if i Wai or not.

    Next pls...

    That you are aware of...

No, Thais are masters of toleration

What do you breakfast on in Thailand? In my experience the locals eat the same thing for any meal. Fried chicken for brekkie, no problem, as an example. As for their version of an English breakfast, which is cold plastic ham and cold fried eggs, no thanks.

Yes, there are some minor breakfast foods but all is game.

    Cold pizza??

Usually just coffee. Possibly porridge if camping, noodles in city. Love noodles (clear soup) in the morning but yeah... could eat Phad Kaprow or anything available. Maybe a bit of bread at work.

Can't eat that heavy stuff in the tropics SFF lol

Agreed. In a country where pupils never fail any year of lower/middle schooling it is little surprise they flounder and resort to cheating later in life.

The kids never learn any life lessons and can not understand what a setback is.

Sadly, the blind leading the blind.????????

I think most Thais understand a set back. Life here is not easy for tens of millions, wake up. Most earn 15-25k pm and many work long hours often in hardship for that pittance

Can't fail students for a variety of reasons. Society won't pay for it just for starts. That's true nearly the world over

I have a Rolex Air King which was given to me by my father for my 21st birthday which was some 55 years ago.  The watch has been a permanent feature on my left wrist since my father gave it to me.  The only time it is taken off is when I take it for service, I intend to do some heavy work in the house/garden involving hammering or I needed an operation.

    Air-King-iv.jpg.5013e79be3a2352d1fb40b132b7e032b.jpg

Whilst I was living in the UK, I would have it periodically serviced by a Rolex approved agent.  So when I moved to Thailand I decided to have it serviced by the Rolex service center in Bangkok.  It cost me 35K THB and came with the standard Rolex 2 year warranty.

Unfortunately after a year (almost to the day) the watch stopped for no apparent reason, so I took it back to the service center who agreed to service it again at no cost.  Blow me down a few days after the original service warranty expired the watch stopped working again, but this time the service center advised that the warranty was out of time and I would have to pay to have it serviced.

After some research on the internet, I discovered a company called Expert Watch based in Bangkok.  They have several small shops located in various shopping large malls and their main base which undertakes the repairs is is in Ladprao.

I took my Rolex to the shop based in the basement of Central World in Bangkok and asked them to give me quote for the repair/service.  A week later they contacted me and advised what the fault was (sorry I can't remember the exact details now) and that the repair/service cost would be 15K THB.  They guarantee their work for 1 year.

The repair/service took about 3 weeks and I collected my watch from the shop in the basement of Central World.  That was 3 years plus ago and the watch has been keeping perfect time - loosing only a few second per month, which is well withing the Rolex spec.

I would have no hesitation in using them again, or recommending them.  Their website link is https://www.expert-watch.com/  Obviously I would phone them first to inquire if they can deal with your watch.  FYI... the guy at the Central World branch speaks good English his mobile number is on the contact page.

I believe this is a kiosk in a basement. I think I went there to try and get my Omega overhauled inexpensively. They wanted 8k and two months. 2 months is normal for working on a watch I just didn't want to leave it there for that. I ended up taking it to Swatch and having a full overhaul done.

But I needed a strap and looked everywhere and that guy in Fortune town was the only place that had proper straps for proper prices. He had a few older Swiss watches lying about and he looked like he was quite an experienced watchmaker. Established.
