In my experience, they check the insurance will pay before administering any treatment.

My neighbour's wife was diagnosed with cancer and their insurance company is refusing to pay for surgery even though they've been paying 60,000 baht for the past five years. Good advert for self insurance I think, they would have 300k if they'd saved it themselves which would cover the cost of the op. Disgusting. Needless to say it's a Thai company.
