Except the fact that it's the superrich that make the rules in this country.
They do in all countries, the difference here is that superrich have no checks and balances on their behavior......thus, one of the most lopsided economies in the world.

Why not? Currently, they operate gas fueled power plants. We haven't heard of any incidents there.
IMO, the chemical plant complex in Map Ta Put is far more dangerous than a NPP.
Based on what I see of their subpar building practices, and their lack of safety, I would never let them run a lemonade stand let alone a Nuclear reactor.

Thai's operating a Nuclear reactor?! What could go wrong? 🤪

I would guess the first year of these changes will be a mess, by the second year things will get hammered out, so by the summer of 2026 we should finally have a really good picture of things. Until then, if you brought money in before Jan 1st 2024 and can make it to 2026 without any more needed remittance, then feel lucky. I wish I remitted about B1-2 million more, but for now I'll just go cheap Charlie for a while. At least the money left in the US can grow while waiting.

How about we tier the VAT, 0% on anything under B1500 (to help the poor), keep it at 7% on everything up to say B1.5 million (help the middle-class), then 25% on everything over B1.5 million, that should hit the superrich where it hurts.

At the end of tax year, the revenue department will find out what a waste of their time and energy to tax on foreign retirees.
Creating useless paper works for nearly nothing.
Remember, in the new technology age, Immigration still insists on 100's of copies of paper, and an army of workers to sort through it all. It's Thai way of employing useless drones, just create "useless paper works" at the expense of Foreigners.

He'll not run away this time.
There may even be a groundswell of support for him that may be the start of some real reforms.
It certainly looks like they kept these charges back so that they can hold them over him in case he started to become a nuisance again.
Well guess what? He's becoming a nuisance again, as predicted.
Last I checked there isn't all that much support for Pheu Thai, let alone Thaksin.

question I keep asking myself is why do us well-heeled farangs subject ourselves each and every year to the constant cycle of abuse?
we must be rather masochistic by nature...

Yup.....we are their little puppets........"Hey Farang, JUMP!"

No it will not. Companies and people will just be subject to tax in line with OECD, UN and CRS norms and local taxation rules.
Thailand as a country will still survive and they can amend their tax laws further if something is not working.
This was like shooting themselves in the foot, they might survive, but it would have been better to study the pros and cons first. You know, like before putting the loaded weapon in it's holster with the safety off.

You have heard about some special cases and convinced yourself that everyone gets the same benefits.
Compared to Thailand, being an immigrant in the USA is a dream.....here, you are treated as a nuisance while they pick your pocket and scam you to death.

Just now, Danderman123 said:You are very misinformed about conditions in the USA for legal immigrants.
But yes, they have the right to pay Social Security tax.
Believe whatever you want to, they get boatloads of support in the USA.

They get free medical, free housing, chance at citizenship, and if working and paying SS they get to collect that too......what more should they get?

OK, my running shoes cost 8k baht. That is extortion? Should I shoplift my next pair? Some truth in what you believe but just curious how would a society work without taxes?
When do we get representation for our taxation? Do we get to vote here? Do we get permanent residency? Do we get to enjoy Thai SS and 35Baht Medical coverage?

A statement or bank book dated 1 January 2024 will work, what more can there be.
How would you verify any information in the statement, or that it is even a real statement? The US Embassy won't do it, and I doubt anyone in Thailand will accept a foreign issued bank statement. Like I said, they need to clarify a lot of things soon!

So if I live off my capital and don’t bring any income in to Thailand, or earn any income here, do I still need to fill in a tax return?
no taxable income to declare will be a nil return if so
You mean you don't have any of this capital in interest bearing accounts, the stockmarket, real estate rentals, etc.?

1 hour ago, Mike Lister said:
Correct. The US SSc income is exempt by treaty and the pre 2024 savings are exempt by Por162.
(regards to Savings/Income before Jan 1st 2024) - Proving that will be the problem, no guidance on that yet.

You seem to overlook one critical fact in your Utopian solution. The Junta is actually a Military Junta. Sadly they are the ones with the GUNS AND TANKS.
In Myanmar, that doesn't seem to matter, people there have a backbone......here? sheep.

I am sure you are being facitious - and that you already knew Thias are not at the top end of the evolutionary pole for IQ. That is why there is no Mensa branch here (despite the prestige available if someone was a member) and the Thailand Facebook site for Mensa members is open to all people residing/working here, and still has less than 100 members (86).
Yes, the average here is I believe 88......yikes!

What set of idiots run this country? First you research the issue, look for the good and the bad, basically gathering all input from all relevant parties so you don't make a dumb mistake by declaring a change without first knowing the pitfalls. In Thailand they declare something, then realize their mistake afterwards, then rescind or backtrack. This stupid approach seems the be the norm here, I seriously question the IQ of the average Thai, or at least those they vote into office. Again......Ready, Fire....Aim!

Which is why the current Constitution should be thrown out, the previous one reinstated, remove all institutions or nominees the Junta installed or manipulated, then arrest Prayut and Prawit for breaking the law on coups. Then the country can have new elections, no Junta allowed, and anyone who supported the Junta coup should be banned from politics for life.

Even if there is an endless list of well educated, charismatic, forward thinking individuals to take their place, Thailand will remain in a never ending cycle of election/political coup/military coup until the LM law is scrapped (maybe my great grandchildren will witness it).
Unlike the Myanmar people, Thai's lack a backbone.....otherwise they would demand change, and fight for it. Right now the the Elite, Military, and Thaksin say "jump", and the Thai people say "how high?".
