Difficult to single out any especially nice episode. Maybe more important to tell, after almost 30 years of visiting, I can’t recall any truly bad experience. Some weird, some funny but none really bad. Sadly, so far I never lived full time in Thailand, just visited frequently. Over the years explored most of the country, made friends, experienced an abundance of kindness and hospitality. But I noticed especially in Pattaya (nowadays just passing through) people are not as friendly anymore as they used to be..... then I also noticed...most of the dealers in the markets or staff at food courts and restaurants etc. are not Thai anymore.

Not sure if there is anything actually happening at the border right now. wife's family is based in Ubon and an uncle and cousin are career soldiers, stationed at the border, participated in the recent clashes. But for about a month now everything is quiet, at least in their area.

When I bring it to the simplest definition: they sell what they have, their time, qualifications and make themselves physically available for money… what’s the difference to any guy going to work at the office?

Well, you are pretty much addicted it seems..., even possible its true for her (but in the end she can't buy anything from this.) Maybe for you. She certainly got other priorities. Most get in the trade not for fun but to provide for their families and kids and don't have the luxury to make decisions based on romantic feelings. It's not easy but can be done. if the girl does not have a job, house, land, filled bank account etc. in Thailand as "reason to return" the inviting guy has to fully sponsor and take all the risks. Then of course the guy has to proof he got enough money to guarantee for her in the first place. I just tried to translate this in a normal job environment. While she was with you: a highly motivated new worker-bee , who had to cope with a demanding, controlling, micromanaging boss while getting paid a lousy salary. But they had zero interest in getting romantically involved with a farang. Unlike the West with the Christian “sex is sin” idea, there is no such conception in Buddhism, and there has always been room for secondary wives, concubines, etc. On one side, guys with enough money to finance several women; on the other side, girls from poor families whose only chance of getting out of poverty is to hook up with a wealthy sponsor. It’s very much woven into the fabric of society. Thai men and Thai boyfriends have to pay and provide too. We farang are just lucky we are able to participate and are perceived as potential well-off sponsors. It does not change anything about the mindset of the p4p girls, though. There are girls who work hard, earn little money, and live their honest lives. And then there are girls who venture out to meet guys with the goal of achieving a better income and standard of living, using their youth and attractive bodies in the process.
