  1. Picture courtesy of ONCB. Authorities have seized over 1,500 kilograms of suspicious chemicals falsely declared as machinery by a Chinese-owned private company. Officials suspect the substances may be precursor chemicals for drug production. On 10 March, officers from the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), along with Chiang Saen police, the Royal Thai Navy’s Mekong security unit, the Pha Muang military task force, and Chiang Saen customs officials, conducted a search at a private export warehouse in Wiang, Chiang Saen district, Chiang Rai province, near the Thai-Lao border along the Mekong River. The operation followed intelligence reports that a Chinese-owned company had arranged for the shipment of two large pallets, covered by white plastic, claiming they contained machinery destined for a stone-crushing plant in Shan State, Myanmar. However, upon inspection, officials found that they did not contain machinery but rather six blue drums filled with a white, cloudy, and pungent-smelling powder, totalling 1,500 kg. Initial field tests using chemical reagents turned the samples black and light blue, indicating the presence of unknown substances. Samples were collected in seven plastic containers and sent to a specialised laboratory for further analysis at the ONCB’s narcotics testing and research institute. Authorities have seized the chemicals for investigation. If confirmed to be precursor substances for drug manufacturing, further legal action will be taken against those responsible. -- 2025-03-11

Emergency responders from the Mittraphap Samakkhi Foundation, operating in the Hat Yai area, were alerted to the incident when a call was received reporting that someone was threatening to jump from the tower beside the railway line in the community behind the police station. Upon arrival, rescue officer Mr Trayaphop Disara discovered the elderly woman standing atop the signal pole. Despite his initial efforts to persuade her to descend, she insisted on waiting for her son to join her before coming down. “She said she was just waiting for her son and would come down as soon as he arrived,” Mr Disara explained. After her son arrived, the situation was resolved as the woman agreed to descend. Due to her advanced age and evident distress, the rescuers supported her carefully to ensure her safety during the descent, a process that took more than 20 minutes. No injuries were reported. Further enquiry revealed that the woman appeared to be under considerable stress, reportedly burdened by financial difficulties and unresolved debts, which may have contributed to her emotional state. It was also noted that a recent setback regarding her son’s bank loan might have been a triggering factor. -- 2025-03-11

At around 22:00 on 9 March, Lieutenant Setthachoke Wongamat, an investigator from Bang Kaeo Police Station, received a report of a fatal fall at a company dormitory belonging to Hong Thai Packaging Co., Ltd., located at 111/7 Moo 7, Soi Mahachai, Bang Phli Yai, Bang Phli District. The incident occurred at a four-storey dormitory. The deceased, identified as Somsak Sophee, 44, from Sa Kaeo Province, was found lying on his back in a narrow alley beside the staircase. He was wearing black trousers, and initial examinations revealed severe injuries, including a broken right arm, a fractured neck, and a head wound with significant bleeding. Police inspected his room on the fourth floor (Room 406) but found no signs of a struggle. His belongings remained undisturbed, and both the television and fan were still switched on. According to Kasem Buachum, 56, who witnessed the incident, Mr Somsak had been drinking with friends outside the dormitory before heading back to his room on the fourth floor. The victim’s body has been sent for an autopsy at Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital to confirm the cause of death. Authorities will continue their inquiries to ensure no foul play was involved. -- 2025-03-11

Initially believing it to be a staged stunt for social media content, he hesitated to contact the police. However, upon further inspection, it became clear that the remains were real, with the deceased wearing what appeared to be a chef’s uniform. At approximately 20:30 on 9 March, Police Lieutenant Colonel Chatchawan Saengsuwan, an investigator at Mueang Chachoengsao Police Station, received a report of a skeletal human remains at the disused Bang Toei railway station in Bang Toei subdistrict. The skeleton was lying on its back, clad in a navy-blue V-neck shirt tied at the collar, resembling a uniform worn by a Japanese restaurant chef, along with black three-quarter-length trousers. Nearby, a chair and a nylon rope were discovered. The deceased was identified as male, but no identification documents were found, only 1,600 baht in cash and a handwritten note stating that he had chosen to end his life and requested no further investigation. It is estimated that the individual had been deceased for over a year. Ekaphon, 36, the man who found the remains, recounted that he had been riding his motorcycle after work and decided to explore the abandoned station due to its eerie but peaceful atmosphere. “I saw a skull on the floor of a room. When I looked inside, I saw a headless body. I was so shocked and thought it might be a prank or some sort of staged content, so I hesitated to call the police, fearing it might be a false report,” he explained. Instead, he alerted a local online news page, which led to the confirmation that the remains were real. Thanakorn, 43, the assistant village headman, noted that this was not the first such incident at Bang Toei station. Three years ago, another man had reportedly taken his own life in a nearby building after an argument with his girlfriend. The remains have been sent to hospital for further examination, while police continue investigations to determine the man’s identity and locate any surviving relatives for a proper funeral. -- 2025-03-11

  19. Pictures from responders. A fire broke out at a well-known electronics and furniture store in Wang Noi, Ayutthaya, destroying all the stock. Authorities believe an electrical short circuit may have been the cause. Police Colonel Somjet Maenbutr, Superintendent of Wang Noi Police Station, received a report of the fire at Prasertchai Electronics and Furniture store, located in Wang Noi New City Market, Moo 7, Lam Sai Subdistrict, Wang Noi District, Ayutthaya Province. Emergency responders, including firefighters from Lam Ta Sao Municipality and local disaster prevention units, dispatched multiple fire engines to the scene in an effort to control the blaze. The shop, a single-storey steel-framed structure with a metal sheet roof, measured approximately 40 by 20 metres. Inside, a vast stock of electrical appliances and furniture provided ample fuel for the fire, which quickly engulfed the entire building. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, posing a significant risk to the adjacent residential complex. Firefighters worked urgently to contain the blaze, particularly to prevent it from spreading to a nearby apartment block. It took approximately one hour to bring the fire under control, but by then, the shop had been completely destroyed. The metal roof had collapsed, leaving only a charred structure. Narupon Suwanprapha, an official from Wang Noi District, confirmed that five people were initially trapped inside the dormitory due to the heavy smoke. Emergency crews successfully evacuated them, but two residents suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to Rajthanee Hospital for treatment. Employees working inside the store managed to escape unharmed, as the building had multiple exits with open side access. Initial reports suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. Investigators are currently questioning store employees and awaiting a forensic examination by Ayutthaya’s police crime scene unit to determine the exact cause. Authorities will conduct a thorough investigation to assess the full extent of the damage. -- 2025-03-11
