  2. Picture courtesy of Kaoded. The Governor of Mukdahan, Mr. Worrayan Boonnarat, has firmly confirmed that the development of Mukdahan Airport will continue as planned, despite recent national media reports suggesting the Ministry of Transport had scrapped the project due to concerns over economic viability. Speaking at a press conference held at the Kaeng Kabao meeting room in the Mukdahan Provincial Hall, Governor Worrayan was joined by Mr. Kanit Pantayo, President of the Mukdahan Provincial Tourism Industry Council, Ms. Yaowalak Tangprakit, President of the Mukdahan Tourism Industry Association, and representatives from the Indochina Market business community. He addressed the confusion caused by central media outlets, which cited a Department of Airports study indicating that the project lacked economic justification. “At present, the Mukdahan airport project is still moving forward,” the governor stated, noting that the 2025 fiscal year budget still includes funding for both the feasibility study and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Governor Worrayan also clarified that before proceeding with the master planning and infrastructure design, including runways, taxiways, and aircraft aprons, a comprehensive feasibility study had already been completed. This process had included a cost-benefit analysis. Consultants were subsequently hired to draft the master plan, and once finalised, the project will be submitted to the National Environment Board for evaluation before proceeding to budget allocation. He further emphasised that the recent off-site Cabinet meeting in Nakhon Phanom on 29 April had reinforced the government’s commitment to the project. At that meeting, the private sector proposed fast-tracking the airport development, and the Cabinet issued a resolution instructing the Ministry of Transport and other relevant agencies to expedite the process. As an interim measure, the governor revealed that travellers could utilise Savannakhet Airport in neighbouring Laos to access Mukdahan and surrounding areas until the local airport is completed. The governor’s statement sends a strong message that the Mukdahan Airport project remains a priority for regional connectivity and economic development, in line with national policy. 4. Picture courtesy of Workpoint. A crash claimed the life of a 21-year-old man after his motorcycle collided with a bicycle during wet weather in Khlong Luang district, Pathum Thani. Police Lieutenant Colonel Wirawat Niyomsap, an investigator with Khlong Luang Police Station, received a report of a road crash involving a motorcycle and a bicycle on Leab Khlong And 1-2 Road, in front of the Tha Khong Municipality Learning Centre in Khlong Nueng Subdistrict. Officers responded to the scene alongside a forensic team from Thammasat University Hospital, local traffic police, rescue personnel from the Tha Khong Municipality, and volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation. At the scene, the deceased motorcyclist was identified as Mr. Krirkphon, aged 21, whose body was found beside the road near his overturned motorcycle. A damaged bicycle was also found nearby. The cyclist, Mr. Wichit, aged 55, sustained injuries and was transported to Kasemrad Pathum Thani Hospital by emergency services. Mr. Wichit recounted the moment of impact, stating he had been cycling to work and was unaware of the motorcycle’s approach before it struck the rear of his bicycle. The victim’s mother reported that her son had left their home in the Eua-Arthorn KM.34 housing project and was en route to his job at Lotus’s Khlong 4. It had been raining at the time of the crash, which likely caused slippery road conditions. Lt. Col. Wirawat confirmed that evidence was collected at the scene, and the body was transferred by the Poh Teck Tung Foundation to the forensic department at Thammasat University Hospital for further examination. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. Adapted by Asean Now from Workpoint 2025-05-02.

  6. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A seven-year-old girl from Buriram narrowly escaped death after being bitten by a highly venomous snake while playing hide-and-seek near her relative’s house. The child was fortunate to receive medical treatment just in time after being transferred to a provincial hospital. The incident occurred on the morning of 30 April, when young Smile, a 7-year-old girl, was playing hide-and-seek with her younger brother and friends in an overgrown garden near her relative’s home in Ban Nong Wa, Nong Waeng subdistrict. While hiding beneath a longan tree surrounded by thick vegetation, she was bitten on the middle finger of her left hand by a snake later identified as a Malayan krait (known locally as ngoo thap samingkhla), one of the most venomous species in Thailand. The child’s grandmother, Mrs. Jumphathong Namsanga, 53, was nearby caring for another grandchild when the younger brother ran to inform her of the bite. Mrs. Jumphathong quickly brought Smile to the local health centre, located less than a kilometre away. Medical staff there recommended urgent transfer to the district hospital. Although Smile was showing signs of fatigue and pain, she remained conscious and responsive. Her mother, Ms. Panadda, 30, who had been working in the fields, rushed home and drove her daughter 12 kilometres on a motorbike to Lahan Sai Hospital. However, Lahan Sai Hospital had no antivenom available, nor did the nearby Nang Rong Hospital. As a result, the medical team arranged an immediate emergency transfer to Buriram Provincial Hospital. Thanks to the child’s clear description of the snake’s black and white markings, doctors quickly identified the species and administered the appropriate antivenom. Medical staff confirmed that the Malayan krait’s venom can be fatal if not treated promptly. The girl’s condition has since stabilised, and doctors have discharged her with instructions to monitor for side effects over the next week. A follow-up check will confirm whether any venom remains in her system. Following the incident, the family has urged other parents to remain vigilant, especially in areas with dense vegetation. The girl’s grandmother has since cleared the overgrown area to prevent similar incidents in the future. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-02.

  8. Pictures courtesy of Khaosod. A Myanmar national has been arrested for stealing over 600,000 baht in cash and a significant quantity of gold jewellery worth nearly 1 million baht in total from a fellow worker living in the same labour camp. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Mr Thant Zin, was apprehended by a combined team of investigators and local administrative officials at a worker’s camp in Moo 5, Dusit subdistrict, Tham Phannara district, Nakhon Si Thammarat province. According to police reports, Mr Thant Zin had been closely observing his fellow Myanmar worker, who was known for his dedication and habit of saving money and gold in preparation for his eventual return to Myanmar. Exploiting this trust, Mr Thant Zin allegedly broke into his roommate’s accommodation while he was away working and stole a large amount of cash and gold ornaments. Authorities recovered over 600,000 baht in cash and several items of gold jewellery hidden in a pile of rubbish behind the camp. Mr Thant Zin also led police to a reservoir where he admitted to discarding the clothes he had worn during the theft. During questioning, the suspect confessed that he initially intended only to take some money for personal expenses but was tempted by the large amount of valuables stored in the victim’s room. He decided to take everything and hide the stolen items until his arrest. The suspect is now in custody at Tham Phannara Police Station and is facing charges related to theft and trespassing. Police commended the swift investigative work that led to the arrest and the recovery of the stolen property, while reminding the public and migrant workers of the importance of secure storage for valuables. 10. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Thailand’s Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4 has revealed findings from an ongoing investigation into complaints of abuse of power and public land encroachment involving state officials and private individuals in the border regions of Chumphon and Ranong provinces. Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Major General Thammanoon Maisonthi, ISOC spokesperson, confirmed the probe originated from complaints lodged in February this year regarding alleged misconduct in Tha Sae District, Chumphon Province. The matter was flagged to ISOC Region 4 by the Office of the Ombudsman’s Investigation Bureau 4. The allegations centre on influential groups in the area accused of misusing official authority, undermining public order, and posing a threat to national security. Following inquiries and witness testimony, investigators discovered that more than 10 individuals, including government officials, were involved in systematic wrongdoing. Among the alleged offences were illegal occupation of public land, unauthorised farming, unlawful import of agricultural products, and smuggling of Rohingya migrant workers. ISOC classified these activities as posing significant risks to both national security and economic stability. Evidence has been compiled and submitted to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the Anti-Corruption Division (ACD) of the Royal Thai Police for further investigation and potential legal proceedings. Simultaneously, the Royal Thai Army’s Thepsatri Task Force has intensified law enforcement in the region. Measures include blocking high-risk transit routes at four key locations, sealing five natural border crossings, and deploying three additional patrol units. These actions have reportedly curbed illegal cross-border activity and reduced the influence of criminal groups operating in the area. ISOC affirmed its commitment to an integrated security strategy, combining surveillance, prevention, and proactive intervention. The agency also expressed gratitude to participating organisations and urged the public to report any suspected illegal activity to the authorities without delay. “National security is a shared responsibility,” Maj. Gen. Thammanoon stated. “Swift public cooperation is essential to stopping these violations and upholding the rule of law.” Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-05-02.

  12. Pictures courtesy of Khoasod. Authorities have dismantled a major Chinese nominee operation that illegally acquired land in Rayong province to construct a housing complex worth over 2 billion baht. The development, which reportedly used zero Thai investment, employed Chinese nationals exclusively in both management and construction roles. Police from the Economic Crime Suppression Division (ECD) launched “CIB Nominee Sweep Episode 3” in coordination with the Department of Business Development, executing raids on three locations in Rayong and Chonburi. Investigators seized key documents, land title deeds, bank books, computers, mobile phones, and company seals. According to Police Major General Thassaphum Charuprat, Commander of the ECD, the investigation uncovered four companies believed to be controlled by Chinese nationals acting through Thai nominees. These companies had acquired 72 rai of land to build ten 8-storey buildings comprising 1,821 residential units. The entire project was allegedly operated under a “closed-loop” system. Chinese nationals were found to be in charge of all aspects, including engineering, design, plumbing, electrical systems, and labour. One of the companies even established its own concrete production unit solely to supply the construction site. Further financial investigation revealed that the companies had received substantial funding from Chinese investors based in Hong Kong. Over 500 million baht in suspicious financial transactions were traced back to these offshore entities, further indicating foreign control. Five company directors and shareholders, both Thai and Chinese, have been charged, alongside two architects, two construction supervisors, and four Chinese construction workers. A Hong Kong-registered company and three Thai-registered firms, Good View Co. Ltd. (HK), Terra Co. Ltd., Sky Co. Ltd., and Ocean Co. Ltd., are also under legal scrutiny. Police Colonel Wichak stated that the ownership structures were deliberately complex, with shell companies holding shares in one another to obscure real control. “This form of corporate layering makes investigations particularly challenging,” he noted. Some of the individuals arrested are; 1.) Mr. Li Fang, Chinese nationality (company director) 2.) Ms. Worati, Thai nationality (company director and shareholder) 3.) Mr. Prasit, Thai nationality (shareholder) 4.) Mr. Chaiyarit, Thai nationality (shareholder) 5.) Mr. Punnat, Thai nationality (shareholder) 6.) Mr. Tao, Chinese nationality (supervisor) 7.) Mr. Jiang, Chinese nationality (plumber) 8.) Mr. Xia, Chinese nationality (cement worker) 9.) Mr. Wang, Chinese nationality (supervisor) 10.) Mr. Hao, Chinese nationality (designer) 11.) Mr. Suang, Chinese nationality (designer) Authorities have invoked the Foreign Business Act of 1999 and the Alien Working Act of 2017. Charges include illegal business operations and unauthorised employment of foreign workers. Suspects have reportedly denied all allegations during initial questioning. Additionally, the Land Department has been notified. If the companies fail to restructure their shareholder compositions to comply with Thai ownership laws, authorities could move to seize and auction the land, returning ownership to eligible Thai nationals. The operation marks the third in a series of crackdowns on illegal nominee activities, following similar cases in Phuket and the Huai Khwang district of Bangkok. 14. Picture courtesy of Matichon. An alarming mental health crisis has emerged among police investigators at Rattanathibet Police Station in Nonthaburi, with some officers experiencing severe depression and suicidal thoughts due to overwhelming workloads. The issue has prompted an internal investigation by the Royal Thai Police. One 28-year-old investigator, who spoke to reporters under condition of anonymity, revealed he is suffering from major depressive disorder, insomnia, and suicidal ideation. Doctors from the Psychiatric Division of the Police General Hospital diagnosed him with severe depression and psychosis. He is among four investigators at the station currently receiving treatment for mental health issues. The officer said he began working at the station in February and found the workload increasingly unmanageable, particularly in the evenings. “After accepting new cases, my condition would spiral, and I felt like I didn’t want to live,” he said. Although he received some support from supervisors, doctors have advised him to resign, stating the pressure is aggravating his illness. He pleaded for additional staff at the station to help ease the burden. Police Colonel Phisut Chantasuwan, Superintendent of Rattanathibet Police Station, confirmed the gravity of the situation. He said the station operates with only 150 officers out of the 223 positions officially allotted, and the shortage is most acute among investigators. While the station requires 29 investigators, only 11 are currently available to work. Four are on medical leave due to stress-related illnesses. “Some investigators become visibly withdrawn or exhibit distressing behaviour, such as hitting their heads against walls,” Col. Phisut said. “We’ve had to bring in psychiatrists to assess staff mental health. It’s deeply worrying.” The superintendent said an ideal caseload would be around 70 cases per investigator annually. However, due to current staffing shortfalls, each officer is handling an average of over 200 cases per year, rising to approximately 500 cases per person when online reports are included. Rattanathibet ranks fifth in the country for online case volumes, processing nearly 4,000 annually. Col. Phisut has submitted multiple reports to higher authorities requesting reinforcements. “I’m under stress myself. When my team suffers, I suffer too. Delays in investigations affect public trust and satisfaction, and we receive complaints,” he admitted. He also revealed he has avoided mental health screening himself out of fear of diagnosis. In the short term, he suggested redeploying personnel from other departments to investigative roles based on workload assessments. However, he emphasised the long-term solution must include hiring sufficient investigators to meet the staffing quota approved by the Royal Thai Police. He also called for improvements to staff welfare and morale to prevent further deterioration. “The health of our officers is directly linked to the quality of public service,” he concluded. “If we want to serve the public well, we must first take care of our own.” Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-05-02.

A couple on the run from four fraud charges amounting to over 8 million baht has been arrested in Trang province after being linked to a drug network and accused of intimidating locals with gunfire. Both suspects have confessed to all charges. Acting on intelligence, officers from the Central Investigation Bureau, under the direction of Pol. Lt. Gen. Jiraphop Phuridech, launched the operation with teams from the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) and Trang Provincial Police. The arrests were carried out in Moo 7, Khao Khao Subdistrict, Huai Yot District. The suspects were named as Ms. Panida Sukkuea, 22, and her partner, Mr. Somsak Thongkaew, 38. Ms. Panida was wanted under a warrant issued by Pathum Thani Provincial Court on 15 August 2024 for computer-related fraud, identity deception, and public fraud. Additional warrants from three other jurisdictions, Lue Amnat, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, and Mueang Pan, bring her total to four fraud charges involving damages exceeding 7.7 million baht. Police apprehended the couple at a rented room, seizing a homemade .38-calibre pistol and five rounds of ammunition. The arrest followed complaints from residents that Mr. Somsak had fired shots in the area and threatened members of the community, creating widespread fear. He was also suspected of being involved in a local drug trafficking network. Further background checks revealed that Mr. Somsak has a lengthy criminal history involving drugs and firearms. His prior charges include methamphetamine use in 2011, illegal possession of a licensed firearm in 2015, and possession of methamphetamines for distribution in 2019. During questioning, both suspects admitted to the charges. They are now in the custody of Huai Yot Police and will be prosecuted according to the law. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-02.

  20. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. In a tense standoff in Khiri Khan, a suspect armed with an explosive device was apprehended by police after threatening to detonate it in a suicide attempt. Fortunately, the explosive failed to detonate, allowing officers to make a safe arrest. The dramatic incident unfolded on the evening of 30 April when officers from three police units, Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan Police Station, Ao Noi Police Station, and the Provincial Investigation Division, moved in to apprehend Mr. Arthit, also known as “Tech,” aged 34, at a makeshift shelter behind house number 24/2 in Moo 10, Bo Nok Subdistrict. Police had obtained intelligence that the suspect, who had two outstanding arrest warrants, was hiding in the shelter. Upon arrival, officers called for the suspect to surrender. However, Mr. Arthit emerged in a disturbed state, shouting incoherently while brandishing a live grenade and threatening to kill himself. The arrest warrants, issued by the Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Court earlier this year, were for charges including attempted murder, illegal possession of explosives, conspiracy to commit a serious drug offence, and the unauthorised distribution of methamphetamine. During the standoff, Mr. Arthit reportedly attempted to detonate the grenade in an apparent suicide attempt. Miraculously, the device malfunctioned, sparing all involved. Officers were then able to de-escalate the situation, at which point the suspect surrendered without further resistance. Following the arrest, officers confirmed the suspect’s identity against the warrants. He had not previously been detained in relation to these charges. Mr. Arthit was taken into custody and formally charged before being transferred to Ao Noi Police Station for further investigation under the supervision of Deputy Inspector Lt. Col. Suthin Pratchaya. The victim was discovered severely burned on the upper floor of the residence. The incident occurred at approximately 04:00, in Panthong district. Police Lieutenant Prasert Kulbutdee, an investigator with Panthong Police Station, together with firefighters from the Panthong Municipality and the local Subdistrict Administration Organisation, rushed to the scene following reports of a house fire. The blaze broke out at house number 39, Moo 10, in Panthong subdistrict, adjacent to the local electricity authority office. Upon arrival, officials found the fire had already consumed much of the wooden upper storey of the home and was spreading rapidly. Fire crews battled the flames for over an hour before bringing the situation under control. Once the fire was extinguished, a grim discovery was made on the second floor. The charred body of the homeowner, identified only as Mr. Jaroon, was found on a bed, burned beyond recognition. His age and full identity were not immediately available. Downstairs, a Honda Wave motorcycle bearing Chonburi licence plate 3 was found destroyed by the fire. Local residents reported that heavy rainfall had preceded the fire. They stated the blaze appeared to originate from the ground floor of the house before rapidly spreading to the upper wooden structure. They said they immediately alerted emergency services upon seeing the blaze. Initial investigations are underway, with forensic teams working to determine the exact cause of the fire.
