  2. Picture from responders and CCTV below. A shocking act of violence unfolded in Bangkok’s Yan Nawa district on the evening of 8 February, when a man doused another with petrol and set him alight before fleeing the scene. Authorities believe the attack stemmed from jealousy after the victim reportedly began a relationship with the suspect’s former partner. At around 20:30 Pol Lt Manit Trutdee of Bang Phong Phang Police Station received a report of a vehicle fire inside Wat Dokmai on Soi Sathupradit 58/8. Emergency responders, including volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found a white Suzuki Carry parked near the temple’s ordination hall. The vehicle, used to transport watermelons, bore signs of fire damage on its left side. Witnesses had managed to extinguish the flames using dry chemical extinguishers before firefighters arrived. A 52-year-old man, later identified as Rachen Thepmanee, was discovered with severe burns covering approximately 80% of his body. He was immediately provided with first aid before being rushed to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital for emergency treatment. Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker, known only as “Ploen,” is a former temple driver, aged around 50. He and the victim, a temple caretaker, were said to have a history of personal disputes, allegedly linked to a romantic relationship with the same female. According to accounts, the suspect had broken up with his girlfriend about a month ago and later learned that she had started seeing the victim. The revelation reportedly sparked jealousy, culminating in the attack. “The victim was at the temple selling watermelons as usual. His vehicle was parked in its regular spot when the suspect walked up carrying a petrol-filled bag. Without warning, he threw it at the victim and set him on fire before fleeing,” a witness stated. Further reports indicate that just a week before the attack, the suspect allegedly threatened the victim’s son with a firearm at their home within the temple community. Residents, fearing for their safety, had chosen to avoid confrontation due to the suspect’s possession of a weapon. Authorities are now gathering evidence and reviewing CCTV footage from the temple and surrounding areas. Witnesses have been called in for further questioning as police work to track down the suspect and bring him to justice. -- 2025-02-09

  4. Picture from responders. An elderly man was tragically killed after a speeding pickup truck belonging to a department store collided with his motorcycle on a main road in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The victim was thrown onto the road and died instantly. Police were alerted to the fatal crash on Therd Phra Kiat Road in Pak Nakhon, Mueang District, on the afternoon of 8 February. Investigators from Mueang Police Station, along with medics from Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital and rescue workers from the Pracha Ruam Jai Foundation, rushed to the scene. They found the lifeless body of an unidentified man, estimated to be around 55–60 years old, lying in the middle of the road. Nearby, a heavily damaged green motorcycle without a number plate was discovered approximately 30 metres from the point of impact. A white Toyota pickup truck, registered in Surat Thani, was found at the scene with damage to its front right side. According to initial police inquiries, the victim had been riding his motorcycle out of a side street opposite a local market when the high-speed pickup truck struck him. The force of the collision sent the motorcycle flying more than 30 metres, and the rider was thrown onto the road, dying instantly. The pickup driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. He claimed that the motorcycle suddenly emerged from the side street into his path, giving him no time to brake before the fatal impact. Authorities are now gathering further evidence and witness statements as part of their investigation into the incident. -- 2025-02-09

  6. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Residents and tourists in Pattaya endured a sleepless night after a lion’s deafening roars echoed through their neighbourhood for hours. Fearing for their safety, concerned locals alerted police, only to discover that the source of the commotion was a foreigner’s pet lion, previously seen being driven around the city in a convertible. The incident took place in Soi Phratamnak, Pattaya, where people living between Soi 5 and 6 reported loud, unsettling roars throughout the night. Officers from Pattaya City Police Station responded to the complaints, expecting to find a noisy party or loudspeakers, but were instead confronted with the unmistakable sound of a lion. Upon investigation, police determined that the two-year-old lion was being kept inside a private residence. The repeated roaring had caused widespread fear and discomfort among both locals and visitors staying in nearby accommodations. Attempts to contact the homeowner or tenant were unsuccessful, leading police to escalate the matter to their superiors. Authorities are now working on possible solutions in coordination with relevant agencies. The same property had previously been the focus of an investigation by both police and the Department of National Parks, after a foreign man made headlines for taking the lion on a joyride through central Pattaya in a luxury sports car. For now, the lion remains inside the house, with the gates firmly shut, as officials determine the next steps to address the situation. -- 2025-02-09

  8. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Police in Songkhla province have launched an investigation after discovering the body of a man stuffed inside a fertiliser sack and dumped in woodland beside a road. The gruesome find has prompted concerns of a possible link to a brutal triple murder in the same area two years ago. The body was found on 8 February, near the entrance to a rubber plantation along the Asia Highway in Moo 10, Tha Chang subdistrict, Bang Klam district. Investigators, led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Somjai Suwankit of Bang Klam Police Station, responded to the scene alongside forensic officers, local rescue teams, and medical personnel from Bang Klam Hospital. Upon arrival, officers discovered the remains of a thin-built man wrapped in a white fertiliser sack. His right wrist had been bound with blue nylon rope, and he was dressed in long tracksuit trousers but no shirt. Forensic experts estimated that he had been dead for approximately four to five days. The body was found by a local worker who had stopped at the site for the first time and noticed a strong odour. On closer inspection, he saw a tightly secured sack and suspected it contained a human body, prompting him to alert the authorities. Initial investigations suggest the victim may have been an undocumented Myanmar migrant who was murdered elsewhere before being dumped at the site. Authorities are particularly concerned by the similarities between this case and a previous incident on 15 March 2023, when three bodies were discovered together in woodland approximately 200 metres from Lopburi Ramesuan Road, also in Tha Chang. In that case, the victims’ hands were similarly bound, and the method of disposal closely resembles this latest discovery. Police are now urgently reviewing evidence and searching for potential links between the two crimes. The body has been taken for further examination at the hospital as investigators continue to gather leads and work to solve the case. -- 2025-02-09

  12. Picture from responders. A fire broke out at a 79-room hotel on Laem Sai Road in Karon, Phuket, on the evening of 7 February, prompting an emergency response from local authorities. Fortunately, swift action by hotel staff and firefighters prevented the flames from spreading too far, but smoke prevented some guests evacuating their rooms, with responders shouting for them to wait on the balconies and not try to climb down. At approximately 18:00 Pol. Capt. Jaras Lempan, an investigator at Karon Police Station, received a report of a fire at the hotel and immediately alerted Pol. Col. Khundej Na Nongkhai, Chief of Karon Police Station. Together with Pol. Lt. Col. Wiwat Chamnankit, Deputy Superintendent of Karon Police, they rushed to the scene to assess the situation. Six fire engines from Karon Municipality arrived promptly, finding thick smoke billowing from the fourth floor of the building. The fire had originated in a housekeeping storage room, which was severely damaged. While the exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation, preliminary reports suggest an electrical fault or improper storage of combustible materials may have played a role. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as hotel guests and staff evacuated the premises. Some foreign tourists, caught in the confusion, were seen climbing onto balconies in an attempt to escape the smoke-filled corridors. However, hotel employees acted swiftly, using fire extinguishers to contain and suppress the flames before they could spread further. By the time emergency responders arrived, the fire he been contained to the store room, preventing any fire damage to the guest rooms, although heat and smoke spread throughout parts of the building. No injuries were reported among guests or staff, though many were visibly shaken by the incident. Video footage captured by onlookers showed thick smoke pouring from the affected floor, with emergency crews working to ensure the blaze was completely extinguished. Firefighters spent nearly an hour ventilating the area and conducting safety inspections before allowing guests to return to their rooms. Authorities have praised the quick-thinking hotel employees for their decisive action, which prevented a more severe outcome. However, officials have emphasised the need for all businesses in the area to review their fire safety measures to ensure they are adequately prepared for emergencies. Karon Police, in collaboration with fire investigators, will conduct a thorough inspection of the hotel to determine whether proper fire safety protocols were followed and if additional precautions are needed. The total cost of damages is yet to be assessed, but hotel management has assured guests that operations will continue as normal as possible with hopefully minimal disruption, with some rooms and areas, off the effected corridor outside the store, currently being unavailable due to smoke and heat damage. The investigation into the exact cause of the fire remains ongoing. -- 2025-02-09 Video courtesy of Phuketinsta. -5632591194189871026.mp4

Ms. Orawan had suffered fatal head injuries, and her body was sent to SWU Ongkharak Hospital for an autopsy before being released to her family. Eyewitnesses reported that they were riding their motorbikes nearby when they saw Ms. Orawan’s motorbike veer out of control after a dog ran in front of it. She crashed into an oncoming bronze-coloured pickup truck, which then ran over her. The pickup driver briefly stopped, got out of the vehicle to check the scene, but did not call for emergency assistance. Police from Sai Noi Police Station received a report of the fatal incident at around 18:00 on 7 February. Officers, along with forensic experts and rescue volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, rushed to the scene in Khlong Khwang subdistrict. At the site, authorities found a yellow municipal rubbish truck from Bang Rak Phatthana subdistrict parked near the waste disposal area with its driver’s door open. Nearby, the body of 61-year-old Saeng Boonrod, the headman of Bang Rak Phatthana, was discovered lying on his back. The victim had suffered a deep wound on his forehead and severe injuries to his abdomen. According to rescue volunteer Padej Thesnarin, he received the emergency call and when he arrived, bystanders had already removed the victim from under the truck’s hatch and attempted CPR, but he could not be revived. Witnesses reported that the truck’s hydraulic system had malfunctioned, causing the heavy rear hatch to fall and pin the victim. It is believed that Mr. Saeng was disposing of rubbish when he attempted to clean the truck’s rear compartment. As he lifted the hatch, the hydraulic failure caused it to collapse, striking him on the forehead and leading to his death. Authorities are conducting a full investigation into the incident. -- 2025-02-09

  24. Picture from responders. A Ugandan woman attempted to evade an immigration check by feigning a seizure on Pattaya Beach after being stopped by officers late during the night of 7 February. The incident occurred during an inspection by immigration officials following widespread online criticism of large groups of Indian tourists allegedly drinking alcohol, littering, and sleeping on the beach. During the routine document inspection, officers approached a suspicious individual, later identified as Miss Irene Nakyanzi, a 39-year-old Ugandan national. As soon as she was asked to provide identification, she fled on foot.
