Picture from responders. A 59-year-old man was arrested in Krabi Province after fatally attacking his son with a sickle during a heated altercation on New Year's Eve. The incident reportedly stemmed from long- standing familial tensions. Police at Nuea Khlong Police Station received a report from Khao Phanom Hospital, where the victim, identified as 32-year-old Chaloemphon Panmas, succumbed to severe injuries. He sustained a deep wound from a sickle that severed a major blood vessel under his left ear, causing fatal blood loss. The incident occurred at the victim's home in Huai Yung subdistrict. Investigators found bloodstains outside the single- storey house, where family members had been celebrating New Year's Eve. Relatives identified the perpetrator as Prasop "Dam" Panmas, the victim's father, who fled the scene on a motorbike to his own home, about 1 kilometre away. Police surrounded Prasop's house, where he locked himself inside and refused to surrender. Armed with a sickle, he shouted angrily from within. Despite negotiations involving his mother and daughter, he remained defiant for three hours. Eventually, a close friend convinced Prasop to step outside. He emerged, still holding the sickle, and confessed to the attack. Overwhelmed with emotion, he claimed that years of verbal abuse from his son had driven him to his breaking point. Police persuaded him to lay down the weapon before taking him into custody. Prasop told investigators that earlier on the day, he had brought shrimp for his son to prepare for the family's New Year's celebration. After returning from tending his cattle, he joined the gathering but was met with harsh words from his son, who allegedly told him, "Don't eat my food." Prasop said he tried to leave, but his son followed him, continuing to hurl insults and challenging him to a confrontation. In a fit of rage, Prasop grabbed a sickle from his motorbike and struck his son once. He then rode home, claiming he had not intended to kill him. Prasop admitted to a history of conflicts with his son, which he attributed to his remarriage. He alleged that his son frequently insulted and even threatened him, including past incidents involving a firearm. Authorities are holding Prasop for further questioning and to gather additional witness testimonies. He faces charges of intentional homicide and will be prosecuted according to the law. -- 2025-01-02

Tour Bus Driver Rams SUV After Heated Argument Over Parking in Pattaya A heated altercation between a tour bus driver and a Bolt ride-hailing driver over parking issues escalated dramatically when the tour bus driver intentionally rammed the SUV, leaving it damaged. Picture captured from CCTV from Facebook. A heated altercation between a tour bus driver and a Bolt ride-hailing driver over parking issues escalated dramatically when the tour bus driver intentionally rammed the SUV, leaving it damaged. The incident occurred outside a hotel in North Pattaya on 30 December at around 08:20. The incident, captured on video and shared widely on social media shows the white tour bus reversing, then driving into the orange SUV, seemingly out of frustration. The footage has sparked public outrage, with many condemning the use of violence over a parking disagreement. The altercation reportedly began when the Bolt driver, identified as Mr O, 35, parked his SUV near the hotel lobby to pick up a passenger. The bus driver, attempting to turn into the hotel’s parking area, became agitated when he found the SUV blocking the way. According to Mr O, hotel staff alerted him that his vehicle was obstructing the bus, prompting him to return to his car. Despite moving the SUV to make space for the bus, the bus driver continued to shout profanities and confront Mr O. Witnesses say the argument intensified, with the bus driver allegedly attempting to physically confront Mr O, only to be restrained by bystanders. Moments later, the bus driver returned to his vehicle and, in a fit of rage, deliberately drove forward ramming the SUV. Mr O described his frustration and anger, saying, “I was furious, but I managed to calm myself and immediately called the police.” Both parties were later summoned by Pattaya Police for questioning. While the tour bus company has agreed to cover the damage caused to the SUV, they have refused to compensate Mr O for the loss of income resulting from the incident. When approached about further compensation, the bus driver reportedly responded dismissively, saying, “I have no money. If someone had died, I’d just go to jail.” Mr O expressed concerns about the financial impact of the incident, particularly as he relies on the vehicle for his livelihood. He hopes the police will mediate a fair resolution. The bus involved in the incident is owned by a tour company that primarily caters to Chinese group tourists. On the day of the incident, the bus was scheduled to pick up customers from the hotel. The company has yet to issue an official statement regarding the driver’s actions. -- 2025-01-02 ScreenRecording_01-01-2025 18-42-22_1.mp4

Picture from responders. A 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed, and four of his friends were injured, in a violent attack by a group of youths in Bangkok's Bangkok Noi district early on New Year's Day. Police used CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators. At 01:15, Police Lieutenant Warathon Imwittaya, an investigator with Bang Yi Khan Police Station, received a report of a fatal stabbing at an unnamed apartment in Soi Wat Pathom Buttisaram, off Charansanitwong Soi 45/7. He was joined at the scene by Police Colonel Payap Somboon, forensic officers, medics from Siriraj Hospital, and the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. The four-storey apartment's fire escape staircase was the location of the body, identified as Kaonaphat, aged 17. He was found lying in a pool of blood and his body bore three stab wounds: one to the chest and two to the upper right arm. Bloodstains were observed from the building entrance to the victim's location. At the apartment's entrance, two motorbikes were found with collision damage. One was a red Honda Wave 110 with a broken front fender, and the other a white Honda Wave 125. Neither had a licence plate. Bloodstains and one of the victim's shoes were also found nearby. Initial investigations revealed that the victim and his friends were riding on four motorbikes when another group of youths pursued them and began attacking. The group scattered, with some seeking refuge in the apartment. The victim collapsed on the staircase, while four of his friends sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. Police reviewed CCTV footage from the area and awaiting statements from the injured individuals to determine whether the group had prior conflicts with the attackers. Authorities have identified two of the attackers and arrested them, as the efforts to apprehend the others responsible continues. -- 2025-01-02

Pictures from responders. A crash occurred late on New Year’s Eve in the Bang Bon district of Bangkok, claiming the lives of two men. The incident, involving a collision between a pickup truck and a motorcycle, took place at approximately 23:10 on Bang Bon 5 Soi 1 in Bang Bon Nuea subdistrict. Emergency responders from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were called to the scene shortly after the accident and found the aftermath of a devastating crash. Upon arrival, rescue workers discovered a white Ford pickup truck, bearing Bangkok registration, which had collided with a roadside utility pole. Beneath the truck lay the body of one of the victims, a man who had been crushed under its wheels. Nearby, a severely damaged green Honda motorcycle, registered in Samut Sakhon, was found at the base of the utility pole. The second victim, another man, was discovered lifeless beside the wreckage. Initial identification revealed that the victims were Thai nationals aged 43 and 44. Their bodies were retrieved and sent for post-mortem examination, while their families were being notified. The circumstances leading to the collision remain under investigation by officers from Bang Bon Police Station. Preliminary findings suggest that the motorcycle was traveling along Bang Bon 5 Road when it was struck by the pickup truck, which then veered off course and subsequently hit the utility pole. Authorities are working to determine whether excessive speed, alcohol consumption, or other factors contributed to the fatal crash. Witnesses in the area are being interviewed, and security camera footage from the vicinity is being reviewed to piece together the sequence of events. -- 2025-01-02

The suspect, a South Korean man aged between 35 and 40, was apprehended after his pickup truck overturned and caught fire. The vehicle, a silver Isuzu D-Max with Chachoengsao registration plate, lost control, collided with a guardrail, flipped, and burst into flames. Rescue teams and motorway officers extinguished the fire before it could spread further. The crash left the vehicle severely damaged, with debris scattered across the road and the rear axle dislodged. The suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, was visibly disoriented and bruised, was apprehended at the scene. Authorities discovered a plastic bag containing a large amount of cash inside the vehicle. The incident began earlier on the motorway near Lat Krabang. According to Mr. Chalome Sae-Chang, 49, the suspect attacked a woman on the motorway. When Mr. Chalome and his wife stopped to intervene, the suspect reportedly jumped into his car and fled. A grieving mother was left devastated after her 29-year-old son, who had promised to return home to celebrate the New Year, was found dead outside a friend’s house early morning New Years Day. The body of Mr. Suchart 29, was discovered at 07:00 outside a house in Wat Pradu, Amphawa district, Samut Songkhram. The victim had a fatal chest wound and appeared to have collapsed near his Honda Scoopy motorbike, which he had ridden to the scene seeking help. According to Ms. Tipawan 19, who discovered the body, the victim had been at a New Year’s gathering at the house the night before. He had left around 03:00 but returned at approximately 06:00, where he collapsed and died shortly after. Ms. Tipawan recalled: “He came back and sat down, before lying on his side. A few of us approached to check on him, but he passed away moments later.” The victim’s mother arrived at the scene in tears, saying her son, a pork vendor, had told her he would return home on New Year’s Day to celebrate. “I don’t know who would want to kill my son. He had no known enemies,” she said. The mother added that the victim had delivered pork to customers earlier in the day and seemed to have no personal disputes or conflicts. Pol. Lt. Col. Prawit Nanchantee, the investigating officer, stated that the victim’s chest wound appeared to have been caused by a sharp object, but no weapon was found at the scene. Over ten people present at the event are being questioned. The body has been sent to the Police General Hospital for an autopsy, while police have reached out to neighbouring Ratchaburi province, given its proximity, for further leads. Maj. Gen. Tourist Confronts Police Over Lantern Release in Chiang Mai During New Year A heated altercation occurred during New Year celebrations in Chiang Mai when a Japanese tourist clashed with police attempting to prevent the release of a sky lantern, a potentially dangerous practice. Picture captured from video. A heated altercation occurred during New Year celebrations in Chiang Mai when a Japanese tourist clashed with police attempting to prevent the release of a sky lantern, a potentially dangerous practice. The incident, which took place at 00:30 on January 1, 2025, was captured in a viral video shared by a local Facebook page. The footage shows a group of tourists preparing to release a lantern on Kotchasarn Soi 3, near the city’s Tha Phae Gate. Police Lieutenant Taweesak Wongjai, from Chiang Mai City Police Station, approached the group to stop the activity due to safety concerns. The situation escalated when the tourist, reportedly unhappy with the police intervention, grabbed Lt. Taweesak’s collar and engaged in a brief scuffle. Despite efforts to explain the risks involved, the tourist persisted in trying to release the lantern. Lt. Taweesak ultimately removed the lantern from the tourist’s grasp to prevent any potential harm. The officer’s actions were later praised online, with social media users commending his calm demeanor and highlighting the dangers associated with releasing sky lanterns. Many commenters noted the risk of lanterns causing fires if they landed on homes or other structures. Police Colonel Prachaya Thitla, Chief of Chiang Mai City Police, explained that officers were deployed across key areas to ensure public safety during the New Year festivities. The prohibition of sky lanterns is a precaution to avoid accidents, particularly during crowded celebrations. After the incident, a Japanese interpreter was called to mediate. The tourist eventually apologised to the officer, as did his parents, who arrived at the scene. Lt. Taweesak decided not to press charges, considering it a misunderstanding and opting to issue a verbal warning instead. Authorities stressed the importance of understanding local regulations to avoid similar incidents. While sky lanterns are a cultural tradition in Thailand, their release is strictly regulated in urban areas due to the fire hazard they pose. -- 2025-01-01

Deadly New Year Roads: 215 Deaths in Five Days Thailand’s roads have proven deadly once again during the New Year holiday season, with 215 lives lost just five days into the “10 Dangerous Days” road safety campaign, officials revealed today. Full story:https://aseannow.com/topic/1347645-deadly-new-year-roads-215-deaths-in-five-days/ -
Thailand’s roads have proven deadly once again during the New Year holiday season, with 215 lives lost just five days into the “10 Dangerous Days” road safety campaign, officials revealed today. The statistics were announced by Somsak Thepsuthin, Minister of Public Health and head of the New Year Road Safety Command Centre, during a press briefing at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. From December 27 to 31, 2024, there were 1,398 road accidents, resulting in 1,354 injuries and 215 fatalities. Motorcycles were involved in the majority of incidents, accounting for 89.93% of crashes. Speeding remained the leading cause (42.75%), followed by drink-driving (24.43%) and reckless overtaking (21.37%). Most incidents occurred on straight roads, with highways under the Department of Highways accounting for 40.84% of incidents, and local village roads for 30.92%. The most dangerous times for road travel were identified as 00:01–01:00, 5:01–6:00 pm, and 18:01–19:00, accounting for 8.02% of incidents. The highest risk group for fatalities and injuries were individuals aged 20–29 years, representing 18.51% of the total. On December 31 alone, 262 incidents were recorded, resulting in 245 injuries and 36 deaths. Chiang Rai reported the highest number of incidents (12) and fatalities (5) on that day, while Chiang Mai saw the highest number of injuries (11). In total, Ayutthaya led with the highest cumulative number of incidents (44), Phuket recorded the most injuries (43), and Bangkok and Nonthaburi shared the highest death toll, each reporting 10 fatalities. However, 11 provinces reported no fatalities. Minister Somsak warned that the risk remains high as millions begin their journeys home following New Year celebrations. Fatigue from insufficient rest after late-night festivities and ongoing celebrations in some areas has been flagged as a significant risk factor. Authorities have responded by setting up 1,781 main checkpoints manned by over 50,000 personnel nationwide to manage traffic, enforce road safety regulations, and reduce congestion. With five days of the campaign remaining, the government continues to push its “Safe Driving, Accident-Free Thailand” initiative to foster a culture of road safety.
