  1. Picture courtesy of SiamChon. Police in Pattaya are investigating the mysterious death of a foreign national whose body was discovered in a drainage pipe outside a resort in Naklua, Chonburi. The incident occurred at a resort in Soi Naklua 18, Bang Lamung District. At 23:05 on December 30, Pol. Lt. Naret Poomsuk, Deputy Inspector of Pattaya City Police, received a report of the discovery. The victim, whose identity remains unknown pending examination of documents, was found with their body inside the drainage pipe. The legs were protruding from the pipe, with the torso tightly within. Upon inspection, police secured the scene with a cordon and noted scrape marks on a large tree near the third-floor rooftop of the resort, suggesting the victim may have fallen from the roof at sometime before getting stuck in the pipe. A resort employee stated that the body was discovered after a tourist reported seeing it inside the pipe. Alarmed by the unusual position of the body, the employee immediately informed the authorities. Pol. Lt. Naret has since called in forensic officers from Region 2 and local detectives to examine the scene further and determine the exact cause of death. Investigations are ongoing, with the police aiming to confirm the identity of the deceased and clarify the circumstances leading to the incident. -- 2024-12-31

  3. File picture for reference only A Swedish tourist suffered a injury after being bitten by a monkey while visiting the historic Phra Prang Sam Yot temple in Lopburi, Thailand, on December 30th. The incident occurred at around 16:00 when a group of four Swedish tourists was exploring the popular landmark. The victim, identified as Mr. Joel, sustained a 2-centimetre wound on the right side of his neck. Police from Tha Hin Station immediately called emergency medical services, and the tourist was taken to Pranararai Maharaj Hospital for treatment, including a rabies vaccination. Speaking after the incident, Banjerd Roisaensuk, a site caretaker, explained that the attack occurred during a staff shift change. He suggested that the monkey might have been attempting to grab the tourist’s belongings or reacting protectively, particularly if baby monkeys were being handled by visitors. “Such incidents have become rare since the monkey population was reduced,” Banjerd noted. “Monkeys are typically drawn to items like sunglasses, headbands, colourful bags, or food. We always advise both Thai and foreign tourists to be cautious, and sometimes we need to use sticks to manage particularly unruly monkeys.” Visitors are reminded to follow staff guidelines and remain vigilant when interacting with the monkeys to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience at this historic site. -- 2024-12-31

  6. UPDATE Burning Tour Bus in Lampang: Fuel Leak Suspected Picture from responders. Passengers narrowly escaped a devastating fire that engulfed a tour bus in Lampang on the night of December 29. Authorities suspect a fuel leak as the cause of the blaze, which destroyed the vehicle. According to preliminary investigations, the fire is believed to have started due to a leaking fuel line that dripped onto the hot engine, vaporised and ignited. The fire spread rapidly, consuming the engine compartment before engulfing both upper and lower passenger decks. Fortunately, all passengers escaped unscathed, though some suffered shock, with one person reportedly fainting during the commotion. On December 30, officers from the Koh Kha Police Station, led by Deputy Inspector Pol. Lt. Col. Kraisinh Wangnaikul, and forensic experts from Division 5, conducted an on-site investigation. Initial findings suggest that the bus, registered in 2022, carried around 50 passengers on its journey. However, at the time of the fire, only 20 passengers remained onboard, as most had disembarked earlier in Tak and Kamphaeng Phet provinces. Pol. Lt. Col. Kraisinh stated, “The remaining passengers intended to disembark in Lampang, but we cannot confirm their identities as the passenger manifest was destroyed in the fire. We will need to cross-check records from the departure station in Bangkok.” The damage to the bus is estimated at over one million baht. Further forensic examinations are continuing. -- 2024-12-31

Picture courtesy of SiamChon A 38-year-old Hong Kong tourist, Mr. On Wing Chan, was left bloodied and injured on December 30, following an alleged assault by a group of condominium security guards in central Pattaya. The incident, which has tarnished his New Year holiday, was reported to Police Lieutenant Chanan Kesornbua at the Pattaya City Police Station at 17:05. According to witnesses, the altercation began when Mr. Chan, who had booked a room through an agency, discovered his reservation had been abruptly cancelled upon arrival. The agency cited "room issues" as the reason for the cancellation, leaving the tourist unable to check in. Frustrated by the situation, Mr. Chan expressed his anger towards the staff, leading to an escalation involving the security team. A 24-year-old witness, stated that Mr. Chan had paid 24,000 baht for two rooms over two nights (6,000 baht per room per night). Efforts to contact the booking agency proved futile as they avoided his calls and eventually switched off their phones. Frustration turned to confrontation, and Mr. Chan reportedly clashed with the security staff. Another witness aged 27, recounted that Mr. Chan was dragged into the guard booth where he was verbally abused and punched by a security guard. When the tourist fought back, the situation spiralled out of control, with other individuals, allegedly associates of the security team, joining the fray to assault Mr. Chan. Despite attempts by women present to intervene, the attackers persisted. Police Lieutenant Chanan Kesornbua has recorded the incident and initiated an investigation. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage and gathering evidence to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in the attack. Legal proceedings are underway to ensure justice for the injured tourist. -- 2024-12-31

  12. Pictures from responders. A fire broke out at the “Yi Jap” store in Krathum Baen, Samut Sakhon, on the evening of 30 December, causing damages estimated at over 5 million baht. The fire, sparked by fireworks, engulfed the store and destroyed its entire inventory. The incident occurred around 20:00 at the popular shop, which sells 20-baht goods and miscellaneous items. Located near the Tonson Night Plaza Market in the Tha Mai subdistrict, the single-story store spanned nearly one rai and was packed with merchandise. Firefighters from multiple local authorities were dispatched to the scene, with over 10 fire engines battling the blaze for approximately 90 minutes, before it was brought under control. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a teenage boy, estimated to be 14 or 15 years old, lighting a firework outside the store. However, instead of shooting upwards, the firework exploded in all directions, with sparks igniting festive decorations, including a Christmas tree and tinsel hanging at the shop’s entrance. The fire quickly spread into the store, where it reached stockpiles of fireworks, causing a series of further explosions that intensified the flames. Although the store and its goods were entirely destroyed, all five staff members and several customers managed to escape without injury. Mr. Chatchai Netkhaem, a member of the local civil defence team, described the chaotic scene, saying, “I was patrolling the market when I heard the sound of fireworks and saw flames erupt. We tried using fire extinguishers, but the flames were too intense, forcing us to retreat until the fire engines arrived.” The Governor of Samut Sakhon, Mr. Naris Niramaiwong, visited the site to oversee the response and express support for emergency personnel. He was accompanied by local officials, including the District Chief of Krathum Baen and senior fire safety officers. Preliminary investigations revealed that the store had been illegally selling fireworks to the public. Governor Naris emphasized that such activity is against the law and reiterated the government’s strict policy to crack down on the sale and use of hazardous materials during the New Year period. “This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers of unregulated fireworks sales,” the governor stated. “I urge all local authorities to remain vigilant and enforce safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies. Additionally, I appeal to the public to avoid using fireworks without proper authorisation and to celebrate responsibly to ensure everyone’s safety.” Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and have pledged to hold the store’s operators accountable for any violations of the law. -- 2024-12-31

Police officers from Mueang Samut Prakan Police Station, along with fire engines from the municipal fire department and emergency responders, were dispatched to the scene following a report of a fire on the school premises. At the scene, smoke was seen billowing from the third building, specifically the Policy and Planning Office. Security guards and a janitor detained the suspect, identified as Mr. Somphon, a 61-year-old resident of Si Sa Ket. He exhibited signs of mental instability and had sustained burn injuries. First aid was administered at the scene before he was taken to the hospital under police supervision. Mr. Natthawit, a 31-year-old janitor at the school, also sustained minor injuries from stepping on broken glass but declined to be taken to the hospital. He recounted that he had been alerted by a security guard about an intruder on the school grounds. Upon arriving, he saw smoke and rushed to extinguish the fire, discovering Mr. Somphon lying near the flames. The suspect had reportedly entered the premises while the school was closed for the holidays, bypassing the security guard post. Initial investigations revealed that Mr. Somphon was not associated with the school. Authorities are working to determine whether the suspect has a genuine psychiatric condition. If a mental illness is confirmed, he will be referred for treatment. However, if no such condition is found, legal proceedings will be initiated against him. The incident occurred inside a house in Soi Muang Kaew 6, Bang Kaew, Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province. Police from Bang Kaew Police Station, accompanied by medics and rescue teams, rushed to the scene on December 30, following reports of a serious gunshot injury. Upon arrival, they found Mr. Ratchanon, a second-year mechanical student from a technical college in Bang Chak, lying in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to his groin. Emergency responders performed CPR before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The investigation revealed that the incident took place inside the victim's home, approximately 100 metres from where he was found. A trail of blood led police to the house, where they discovered a homemade firearm believed to have caused the injury. Further searches uncovered two additional homemade firearms, gun components, and two knives in the victim's bedroom. A 15-year-old friend, identified as Mr. A, who was present during the incident, explained that the victim had been examining the firearm when it accidentally discharged while being pulled from his waistband. Police have secured all evidence and are questioning witnesses to determine the exact circumstances of the incident. The victim's body has been sent to the forensic institute for an autopsy. Legal proceedings are underway to address the possession of illegal firearms and establish accountability. -- 2024-12-31

  18. Picture captured from CCTV below. A motorcyclist narrowly avoided a fatal crash after crashing into a trailer at an intersection near Rayongwit School 2 in Huai Pong, Mueang Rayong, Rayong Province. CCTV footage captured the incident which, which occurred at 10:45 on 29 December at the Muang Mai–Map Ta Phut Road intersection. The trailer, coming from Burapha Phatthana Road, was turning towards Rayongwit School 2 when the motorbike, speeding along the New Industrial Road past the school, failed to slow down and collided with the rear wheels of the truck. Miraculously, the motorcyclist hit the truck’s tyre with his body side on, avoided going under the wheels and narrowly missed being crushed. The rider was able to stand and inspect his bike, though he sustained a cut on his chin. Emergency responders confirmed that the trailer driver managed to brake in time, preventing further injuries. Mr. Chalongsak, a 47-year-old shop owner near the intersection, shared his concerns about the area’s dangers: “I heard the crash but didn’t go outside as I was attending to customers. Accidents happen here often because the school wall blocks visibility. Although there are stop signs and road markings, drivers rarely follow them. Everyone needs to slow down and obey the rules to prevent accidents. Yesterday, I even heard drivers honking aggressively at this same spot.” A local resident, a 25-year-old man, added: “This intersection is notorious for accidents. Drivers need to be more cautious. The motorcyclist in this case is incredibly lucky to have walked away with only minor injuries, otherwise, he might have joined the list of fatalities at this junction.” -- 2024-12-31 ScreenRecording_12-30-2024 19-43-09_1.mp4

  20. Picture courtesy of Sea Marine Resources Research Centre A male juvenile dugong, emaciated and with barnacles attached to its body, was discovered washed ashore near the Ban Bo Mamuang Pier in Khlong Thom District, Krabi. This marks the 45th dugong carcass found in the Andaman Sea this year. On December 30, the Lower Andaman Sea Marine Resources Research Centre received a report from Mr. Sitthichai Bo Mamuang, the village head of Ban Bo Mamuang, who informed them that locals had found the dugong carcass on December 29 near the pier in Moo 4, Sai Khao Subdistrict, Khlong Thom District, Krabi. Preliminary examinations revealed that the carcass belonged to a male dugong measuring 200 cm in length and weighing approximately 100 kg. The animal was not yet fully grown and appeared malnourished. The body was classified as fresh, with barnacles covering its surface and bite marks consistent with natural dugong herd behaviour. No significant injuries or fishing-related wounds were found. This discovery is the third dugong carcass reported in the last four days. On December 26, the Lower Andaman Sea Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre was informed by officials from the Navy’s Marine Security Unit (NRPT) stationed on Koh Lanta Noi about another juvenile male dugong washed ashore near Koh Po Pier in Moo 4, Koh Lanta Yai Subdistrict, Koh Lanta District, Krabi. That dugong was found in fresh condition, with its body in normal condition but similarly covered in barnacles and showing bite marks from herd behaviour. On the same day, another male juvenile dugong was found washed ashore at Ban Lo Yai Beach in Koh Lanta Noi Subdistrict, Koh Lanta District, Krabi. However, this carcass was in a decomposed state. Both carcasses showed no significant injuries or evidence of fishing gear-related wounds. This string of incidents highlights ongoing concerns about dugong mortality in the Andaman region, as this year’s count has reached an alarming 45 carcasses. -- 2024-12-31

While driving parallel to another car, the motorcycle suddenly appeared, cutting in front of the vehicle beside him before darting into his lane. Despite slamming on the brakes and pulling the handbrake, he was unable to stop in time, colliding with the rear of the motorcycle. The force of the crash caused the motorbike to overturn, injuring Mr. Nyein Myint, while Ms. Aye Aye Khaing was thrown off the pillion seat. She struck the car’s windshield before being flung two to three metres onto the road, where she tragically died on impact. Mr. Nyein Myint, the motorcycle rider, later explained that he and Ms. Aye Aye Khaing were both language teachers at an international school in Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima. The pair had been en route to visit the wind farm on Khao Yai Thiang in nearby Sikhiu district but were unfamiliar with the route. In an attempt to navigate through the heavy moving traffic and make a U-turn, they inadvertently crossed paths with the oncoming car, leading to the fatal collision. Police have launched an investigation into the crash and are working to determine if charges will be filed. -- 2024-12-31
