  1. Picture courtesy of Workpoint. A 62-year-old woman was killed and another seriously injured in an incident involving a reversing municipal garbage truck in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi. The incident occurred on the morning of 9 June in Soi Chumchon Wat Sai, Bang Si Thong Subdistrict. Local police from Bang Kruai Station, along with forensic doctors and Poh Teck Tung Foundation rescue workers, were called to the scene following reports of a fatal collision between a refuse truck and a motorcycle. The scene was a narrow two-lane road where a municipal garbage lorry had reversed over a white-and-blue Honda Wave motorcycle. The rider, identified as Mrs Wannapha, aged 62, was found dead at the rear of the truck, her head having been fatally crushed by the vehicle’s rear wheels. The pillion passenger, 68-year-old Mrs Malee, sustained head injuries with visible swelling and was rushed to Bang Kruai Hospital for treatment. Eyewitness Ms Waranuch Sroi-in, 54, told reporters she had been riding her motorbike behind the victim’s vehicle and had stopped nearby. She stated that the garbage truck had activate reversing lights and the deceased, who was reportedly unwell, appeared to be attempting to reverse her motorcycle out of the way but was unable to move in time. She added that the motorbike was likely in the driver’s blind spot, making it difficult for the truck operator to see the victims. Local residents rushed to assist, managing to pull the injured passenger to safety after the truck lifted its rear section, romallow access. Unfortunately, Mrs Wannapha had already succumbed to her injuries. The deceased’s daughter, 35-year-old Ms Chotika, said she had not witnessed the accident but was informed by phone that her mother had been killed. Her mother had left the house that morning to collect a relative. “She probably thought the truck was going forward, not reversing,” said Ms Chotika. “It must have happened too fast for her to react. Just yesterday I bought noodles for her and we chatted as usual. I never imagined today would end like this.” The garbage truck driver declined to speak to the media, stating that he would provide a statement only to police. Officers are currently examining evidence at the scene and will review nearby CCTV footage in order to determine the exact cause of the incident. An investigation is ongoing. 3. Picture courtesy of Matichon. A 60-year-old woman wanted in connection with the infamous UFUN Ponzi scheme has been arrested after more than a decade on the run. Ms Sasinkarn was apprehended by officers from The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) in Bang Na, Bangkok. Ms Sasinkarn was wanted under an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court in June 2015 on charges of “fraudulent public borrowing” and “participation in a transnational criminal organisation”. Authorities allege she played a significant role in luring victims to invest in UFUN, a company that operated under the guise of a direct sales and health product business but was, in reality, a classic pyramid scheme. The UFUN scheme, which operated between 2013 and 2015, promised unusually high returns to investors and encouraged members to recruit new participants to earn commissions. Ms Sasinkarn was reportedly a prominent figure in the operation, delivering persuasive presentations and personally receiving over 19 million baht from investors. She is also believed to have transferred at least 5.2 million baht to affiliated companies. Following the initial investigation, authorities discovered that Ms Sasinkarn had gone into hiding and later became a white-robed lay nun at a religious centre in Chachoengsao province. Although she evaded arrest once during a police raid, officers continued investigate her movements. Eventually, she was apprehended by authorities and was taken into custody for formal prosecution. During interrogation, Ms Sasinkarn denied all charges and declined to provide testimony to the police, opting instead to contest the allegations in court. The UFUN case is considered one of the largest Ponzi schemes in Thai history, with over 2,400 victims and total losses exceeding 356 million baht. The judicial process has already seen 32 individuals sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Supreme Court, following revisions made by the Appeal Court. Seven ringleaders were initially sentenced to 50 years, while 15 others received 20-year terms. The Supreme Court upheld convictions for 32 defendants and ordered them to collectively repay the full amount to the victims. The arrest of Ms Sasinkarn marks a significant step forward in closing the chapter on a case that has haunted thousands of Thai citizens for over a decade. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to bringing all remaining fugitives to justice. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-06-10

  7. Picture courtesy of Komchadluek. A 70-year-old female wild elephant is receiving emergency medical care after collapsing in a palm oil plantation near the boundary of Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani province. Mr Theekawut Sriburin, head of Khao Sok National Park, confirmed that park officials and a veterinary team from Protected Area Regional Office 4 (Surat Thani) swiftly launched a rescue operation upon receiving reports of the incident. The elephant was discovered in Village 6, Khlong Sok Subdistrict, Phanom District, lying in a weakened state and unable to stand. The area, located on the edge of the national park, had been experiencing persistent rain, resulting in muddy conditions that hampered the rescue effort. Veterinarians immediately administered intravenous fluids to combat dehydration and restore the animal’s strength. Anti-inflammatory medication was given to relieve pain and sugar solutions were used to provide an energy boost. Blood samples were also collected for laboratory analysis to determine the root cause of the illness. Despite the difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions, the rescue team remains stationed at the site, monitoring the elephant’s condition around the clock. Officials remain hopeful that the elephant will respond positively to treatment and make a recovery. This incident highlights the challenges faced by Thailand’s conservation teams in safeguarding ageing wildlife as their habitats increasingly overlap with agricultural land. A incident occurred in Chumphon province on 8 June, when a 40-year-old farm worker died after the tractor he was driving veered off a steep road and plunged into a ravine approximately 40 metres deep. The incident also left a female passenger injured, though she narrowly escaped more serious harm by leaping from the vehicle just in time. Police Lieutenant Samart Than-in, duty investigator at Tha Sae Police Station, received an emergency call around 17:00. The crash took place along the steep, mountainous Phanwa-Ke-La Road, in Moo 13, Rabror Subdistrict, Tha Sae District, around 20 kilometres from the Thai-Myanmar border. Rescue teams from the Chumphon Charity Foundation and Rabror Subdistrict Administrative Organisation responded swiftly. Upon arrival, they discovered 34-year-old Ms. Panadda from Udon Thani, who had suffered injuries to her head and body. She was transported to Tha Sae Hospital for treatment. The deceased was later identified as Mr. Sarawut, 40, from Huai Yot District in Trang province. His body was found lying face-up in roadside undergrowth with blood visible around his mouth. Emergency responders covered the body with a white sheet before recovering it and sending it to Tha Sae Hospital for a formal post-mortem examination. Initial on-site investigations revealed skid marks on the steep descent, indicating a loss of control. At the bottom of the ravine, responders located a severely damaged red tractor with shattered wheels and scattered parts, along a trail of broken vegetation. Ms. Panadda, who had been riding as a passenger, managed to jump clear of the vehicle before it plummeted into the ravine. Authorities believe Mr. Sarawut was ejected from the vehicle and then fatally crushed as the tractor tumbled down. Police are continuing their investigation and plan to interview Ms. Panadda further to determine the exact circumstances leading to the incident. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-06-10

Residents of a quiet neighbourhood in Rayong province were left stunned when a large python was discovered curled up under the bonnet of a pickup truck, apparently digesting a chicken it had just devoured. The incident occurred around 11:00 on 9 June, in the Rarn Nam alley of Pluak Daeng District. Local rescue workers were alerted by a resident who spotted the snake slithering into the engine compartment of a parked vehicle and feared it could pose a danger. Upon arriving at the scene, rescue personnel found a pickup truck, parked in front of a house. Opening the bonnet revealed a two-metre-long python coiled calmly within the engine bay, seemingly enjoying a post-meal rest. The rescue team managed to safely extract the snake within minutes and later released it back into its natural habitat. The vehicle’s owner, 29-year-old Mr Nikhom said he had earlier heard unusual noises coming from his chicken coop but had not investigated at the time. “I didn’t think much of it,” he said, “until I opened the bonnet during a routine check and nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw the python curled up inside.” Mr Nikhom believes the snake had consumed one of his chickens and taken refuge in the vehicle’s engine compartment to digest its meal and escape the heat. “We sometimes see snakes around here,” he added, “but I’ve never found one sleeping in my truck before.” Adapted by Asean Now from Workpoint 2025-06-10

A 30-year-old woman has died and her 12-year-old son is in serious condition after their motorcycle collided with the rear of a parked truck transporting a modular home in Phitsanulok province. The collision occurred on Highway 1086, in front of a noodle shop in Mueang district, Phitsanulok. The victim, identified as Ms. Siwika, was riding her motorbike with her son as pillion passenger when she lost control and crashed into the back of a white Isuzu flatbed truck. The truck was one of three parked along the roadside, delivering prefabricated homes. Rescue workers from the Khaophap Foundation rushed to the scene. Ms. Siwika was found unconscious with critical abdominal and head injuries, with a visibly broken left arm. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her son sustained serious head and abdominal injuries. He was transported to Buddhachinaraj Hospital where he remains under close medical supervision. The boy has not yet been informed of his mother’s death to avoid causing further emotional trauma. Family members arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. Ms. Siwika’s mother collapsed in grief upon seeing her daughter’s body. Through tears, she shared that her daughter had travelled into Phitsanulok city earlier that day to visit a sick relative and was on her way home to Nong Tom Market in Phrom Phiram district, where she made a living selling goods. Mr. Sumit, the 30-year-old driver of the truck, told police that he and his team had driven from Pathum Thani to deliver the modular homes. They had stopped to eat noodles at a roadside stall when the crash occurred. He said the motorcycle appeared to brush against one of his team members walking beside the road, causing Ms. Siwika to lose control and crash directly into the back of the vehicle. Police at Mueang Phitsanulok Station are continuing to investigate the incident and have begun taking witness statements. Legal proceedings will follow in accordance with the findings. Highway 1086, which runs between Phitsanulok and Wat Bot, has recently been expanded into a four-lane road and has been the site of several fatal incidents. Just the night before, a motorcycle crashed into a roadside coffee stall less than 1.5 km from this incident, resulting in two fatalities. The body of Ms. Siwika has been released to her family for religious rites. Police continue to remind motorists and pedestrians alike to exercise caution on this increasingly dangerous stretch of road. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-06-10

  17. Pictures courtesy of Matichon. A construction incident occurred on the afternoon of 9 June, when a large crane collapsed at the site of a 67-storey condominium in Pattaya, sending workers fleeing in panic. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or fatalities. The incident took place around 13:00 on Soi Thap Phraya 15. The crane’s boom, which was lifting a cement bucket, buckled and collapsed during the operation. Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos as construction workers scrambled to safety. In response, Pattaya City Mayor Poramet Ngampichet ordered an immediate suspension of all construction activities at the site, citing urgent safety concerns. “Our first priority is to ensure the safety of all workers and nearby residents,” said the mayor. “An investigation is already underway to determine the cause of the collapse.” Preliminary findings suggest that over 30 storeys of the building had already been constructed. During the operation, the crane’s boom reportedly bent and gave way, causing steel cables to snap. The crane’s boom then fell against the structure of the building itself. Engineers from the Pattaya City Engineering Office are now tasked with examining the equipment in detail to determine whether the crane failed due to structural weakness or because it was overloaded beyond standard limits. Construction will remain suspended until a full safety assessment is completed and authorities are satisfied that the site is secure. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-06-10

  23. Picture courtesy of Matichon. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has raided a construction supply company in Rayong province following a tip-off that the business was smuggling plastic pipes from China into Thailand without paying import duties. Acting on orders from Police Lieutenant General Jiraphop Phuridej, Commissioner of the CIB, officers from the Economic Crime Suppression Division (ECD), under the command of senior officers including Police Major General Thaspoom Jaruprach, coordinated the raid on Wee Thai Construction Co., Ltd., located near the Airplane Market in Nikom Phatthana district. The company and its executives are accused of violating customs laws by knowingly concealing and distributing untaxed goods. The goods in question, PVC and PE pipes, are commonly used in agricultural irrigation, plumbing and electrical conduit systems. The investigation began after complaints were filed by consumers who questioned how the company could sell products significantly cheaper than competitors. Authorities suspected the low prices were a result of the goods being smuggled into the country to avoid customs duties. Surveillance and intelligence gathering by the ECD’s Subdivision 2 revealed the company had indeed been importing large quantities of pipes without passing through formal customs procedures. Officers secured a search warrant from Rayong Provincial Court and proceeded with the raid. During the operation, authorities discovered over 1,000 pieces of PE and PVC piping of Chinese origin stored at the company’s warehouse. The company was unable to provide documentation proving the legal importation of the goods or the payment of relevant duties. As a result, the CIB seized the goods and filed a formal complaint against both the company and its authorised executive director. Legal proceedings have begun under The Customs Act, which prohibits the possession or sale of goods that have not cleared customs inspection. During preliminary questioning, the suspect confessed to all charges, admitting that the pipes were brought into Thailand illegally. The company had been mixing undeclared products with legitimately imported goods in order to avoid detection. The pipes were brought in via Laem Chabang Port and had been distributed across the local market for nearly a year. The suspect claimed the motivation behind the operation was to meet high market demand while keeping prices low. However, authorities warned that such actions not only breach customs law but also pose potential safety and quality risks to consumers. The investigation is ongoing and the CIB has signalled that it will continue to crack down on similar operations across the country to protect consumers and uphold fair market competition.
