Picture courtesy of Kaoded. A karaoke bar in Mae Chan District, Chiang Rai Province, has once again been shut down following a raid by provincial authorities and police, after it was found operating illegally and employing young girls, below legally permitted age, as hostesses. Authorities from the Chiang Rai Provincial Administration acted after receiving public complaints that the “Saeng Chan Café” karaoke venue was staying open past legally permitted hours and employing girls under the legal age limit. A covert operation was launched to confirm the claims, and surveillance revealed ongoing violations, despite a previous police raid on 4 May 2024, when the same venue was charged for operating without a proper licence and breaching operating hours. At approximately 00:45 on 24 April, officers executed a planned operation at the premises, located at 219 Moo 9, Pa Sang Subdistrict, Mae Chan District. The single-storey establishment was found hosting live music, with 11 customer tables and five VIP karaoke rooms in use. Upon inspection, 11 female service staff were found, including two girls under the age of 18, the youngest just 15 years old. A cashier and a manager were also present, with the latter identified as Ms. Chomphisa aged 49. While Ms. Chomphisa provided certain business-related documents, she was unable to produce a valid operating licence when requested. Further checks revealed seven patrons under the legal age of 20, none of whom had been asked to present identification upon entry. Authorities have levelled multiple preliminary charges, including: • Operating an unlicensed entertainment venue • Selling alcohol beyond legally allowed hours • Encouraging inappropriate behaviour in minors • Employing underage workers Officials have stated that a multidisciplinary team will now be assembled to assess whether any of the underage workers were victims of human trafficking. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A man who shot and killed a 42-year-old woman in front of her 10-year-old son has surrendered to authorities following a dramatic hostage situation in Sam Phran district, Nakhon Pathom province. The suspect, identified as 33-year-old “Champ”, had fled the scene of the fatal shooting, which took place at a rented room in Wang Taku Subdistrict, Mueang District, on the morning of 24 April. According to the victim’s daughter, who witnessed the attack, the assailant initially knocked on the front door and fired two warning shots, appearing enraged. The family attempted to flee via the back of the house but were intercepted by the gunman. The mother and her 10-year-old son retreated to a bedroom, where the suspect followed and fired two shots at the woman, killing her instantly in front of the child. He then escaped on a motorcycle via Malaiman Road. Investigators suspect a dispute involving informal loans may have been the motive and the suspect was a debt collector. Following the attack, Champ rode into hiding in Sam Phran District, where he abducted a woman who runs a local shop. Reports suggest that the suspect had a romantic interest in the woman, who was already in a relationship. He took her as a hostage and held her in a two-storey rented room in Soi Petro 16, Tha Kham Subdistrict. Police quickly sealed off the area and coordinated with the suspect’s mother and relatives in a bid to defuse the situation peacefully. The suspect was seen emerging briefly from the room with a firearm in hand before retreating inside. Negotiators worked for several hours to encourage his surrender. Eventually, Champ agreed to give himself up without further violence. Police confirmed his surrender and said he is now in custody for questioning. Authorities continue their investigation, and Champ is expected to face charges of murder, illegal possession and use of a firearm, and kidnapping. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-04-25.

Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A foreign fishing vessel believed to be Indonesian was intercepted and seized by Thai authorities after it was found illegally operating in Thai territorial waters near Koh Lipe. Five Indonesian nationals, including the boat’s captain and four crew members, were taken into custody. The operation was led by Vice Admiral Suwat Donsakul, Director of the Third Naval Area Command’s Maritime Enforcement Command Centre (Thai-MECC Region 3). Acting on intelligence from the Satun Provincial Vessel Monitoring Centre, Navy personnel launched a patrol to investigate a suspicious vessel operating west of Koh Lipe, approximately 13.75 nautical miles offshore. Naval forces deployed a high-speed patrol boat, “MECC 4006,” and rigid inflatable boats to the area. Upon locating the vessel, authorities boarded and detained all crew members without resistance. The boat and its crew were then escorted to Koh Lipe for legal processing. All five men, confirmed to be Indonesian nationals, are currently in police custody while legal proceedings are initiated. Initial reports suggest the vessel had been illegally fishing in Thai waters, in violation of the country’s maritime sovereignty and resource protection laws. Rear Admiral Sentaibua Buanium, Deputy Director of the Satun MECC, praised the swift coordination between local fishing networks and maritime authorities. The suspicious vessel was first spotted by local fishers, who promptly reported it to officials, a move that proved instrumental in the vessel’s capture. Authorities have reiterated the importance of community cooperation in safeguarding Thailand’s marine resources and have reminded the public to report any suspicious maritime activity. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A dramatic late-night fire swept through the historic old market of Phanom Sarakham in Chachoengsao province, destroying at least 12 wooden homes and shop houses. Authorities dispatched 30 fire engines from surrounding districts to tackle the fast-spreading blaze. The fire broke out around 23:30 on 23 April in the heart of the old market on Sukhaphiban 5 Road in Phanom Sarakham subdistrict. Local rescue services were alerted by residents and quickly called in reinforcements from neighbouring municipalities. Upon arrival, firefighters found the flames engulfing traditional wooden structures, fuelling a rapid spread. The fire was made more difficult to control due to the close proximity of the old buildings. Authorities promptly cut power to the affected area to aid firefighters. Despite the chaos, emergency responders managed to evacuate residents from their homes. There have been no confirmed reports of injuries or fatalities. Witness Veerachai Chaipong, 36, described the moment he saw flames erupt in front of him, noting how quickly the fire escalated. He believes most residents were still awake when the fire began, which may have helped avoid casualties. Provincial Governor Khajornkiat Rukpanichmanee arrived on-site to oversee response efforts and visited affected families to offer support in the aftermath of the disaster. Police officers from Phanom Sarakham Police Station are now investigating the cause of the fire. Initial findings suggest it may have resulted from an electrical short circuit, given the age and condition of the market structures. A full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause. Picture from responders. A horrific road crash on Motorway Route 7 has resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, including two children, when their vehicle was crushed between two lorries. The crash occurred at approximately 23:00on 24 April in the outbound lanes of the motorway, near kilometre marker 23+300, close to the Lat Krabang toll booths in Samut Prakan province. Emergency responders from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation arrived to find a devastating multi-vehicle collision in the emergency parking zone of the far-left lane. A white Chevrolet Captiva SUV, registered in Udon Thani had been crushed after being rear-ended at high speed by a lorry. The force of the impact drove the SUV into the rear of a stationary white tanker, registered in Chumphon, causing damage to both vehicles. The lorry responsible for the crash, registered in Chonburi, sustained frontal damage and is believed to have been travelling at high speed at the time of the collision. Rescue teams used specialist cutting equipment to free the victims from the mangled wreckage. Eight people travelling in the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene, with two others seriously injured and rushed to hospital. One individual from the lorry also sustained injuries. According to initial reports, the Chevrolet Captiva had pulled into the emergency stopping lane behind the oil tanker shortly before the crash. Authorities believe the lorry driver failed to notice the parked vehicles in time, resulting in a catastrophic collision. In a particularly poignant development, it has emerged that the ill-fated SUV had only been purchased six days earlier. Social media posts by the vehicle’s owner, proudly showing off their new purchase with matching registration details, have circulated widely since the crash, intensifying the heartbreak surrounding the tragedy. Thai authorities are working to formally identify the deceased and have appealed for the families of those involved to contact them urgently, as the investigation continues. The incident occurred as he was returning from a barbecue dinner dare with his girlfriend, who was also injured in the crash. Rescue volunteers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation in Pattaya were alerted to the collision and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a damaged Honda Wave 110i motorcycle, white and blue in colour, registration from Rayong, which had struck the rear of a white Hino S700 lorry, which had been parked at the roadside. The lorry, loaded with concrete blocks, had broken down and was stationary at the time of the incident. Its driver, Mr Phisit Sotakhamsaen, 45, told police he had been attempting repairs and had removed the vehicle’s battery, resulting in the emergency lights being disabled. He noted the location was poorly lit and that he heard a loud crash before discovering the motorcycle and its riders thrown across the road. Mr Chatchasak Saweko, 38, the motorcycle rider, was pronounced dead at the scene, having fatal head trauma. His passenger, Ms Yuwalee Hommak, 24, sustained abrasions and complained of pain in her left shoulder. Rescue personnel administered first aid before transferring her to hospital for further treatment. Police Lieutenant Polsan Khanchalee, Deputy Inspector of Investigation at Huai Yai Police Station, conducted an initial on-site investigation and documented the scene. The deceased was later transported to Bang Lamung Hospital, where authorities await contact from his family to claim the body for religious funeral rites. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, including the positioning of the lorry and the lack of emergency warning signals and will take legal proceedings on the outcome. Doctor Raises Alarming Questions After Train Attendant Dies Onboard Overnight Service Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A doctor has spoken out following the death of a sleeping car attendant onboard an overnight train, questioning the absence of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and the lack of CPR training for railway staff. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A doctor has spoken out following the death of a sleeping car attendant onboard an overnight train, questioning the absence of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and the lack of CPR training for railway staff. The incident occurred on express train No. 86, running from Nakhon Si Thammarat to Bangkok. The male attendant, reportedly suffering from chest tightness and breathing difficulties, collapsed and died while on duty. The incident was brought to public attention by the Facebook page of “Dr. Paiphan’s Obstetrics & Gynaecology Clinic,” which shared the firsthand account of a physician who was travelling on the train and tried desperately to save the man’s life. “Because death never warns in advance,” the post begins. The doctor, who had boarded the train at Chumphon around 22:00 en route to a meeting in Bangkok, was awakened just after 03:00, by a commotion among passengers. “An officer has collapsed!” someone cried. She rushed to the scene and found the man unresponsive, with no pulse and no signs of breathing. She immediately began CPR. Only two other passengers stepped in to help, one to help time the compressions, the other to assist with chest compressions. Railway staff, had no training in emergency aid, did what they could, calling the emergency number 1669 and halting the train to allow rescue workers in Ratchaburi to board. Despite continuous CPR for 30 minutes, the man showed no signs of recovery by the time medics arrived. He was pronounced dead on site. In the aftermath, the doctor expressed her deepest condolences to the victim’s family, but also raised serious concerns as a medical professional: Why is there no AED onboard trains? Why are railway staff not trained in basic CPR? And in that critical moment, why were only two fellow passengers prepared to step forward and help? “CPR isn’t just a doctor’s job,” she wrote. “It’s a human responsibility, to not just stand by while someone dies in front of you.” She concluded with a reminder that could save lives: Perform chest compressions at 100–120 times per minute, about 5–6 cm deep. Call 1669 immediately. Use an AED if one is available. The post has sparked widespread discussion online about emergency preparedness on public transport and the need for broader CPR training and equipment across the railway system. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Police in Patong have launched an investigation following the discovery of a deceased Swedish national in his hotel room in the Kathu District of Phuket Province on 23 April. The man, identified as Mr Pierre, aged 52, had reportedly been staying alone at the hotel since 10 April. Authorities have confirmed that there were no visible signs of struggle, forced entry, or foul play at the scene. Personal belongings, including medication, were found intact, and nothing in the room appeared to have been disturbed. Emergency services were called to the scene and later transported the body to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. According to a hotel maid who discovered the body, Mr Pierre had been seen drinking alcohol in his room on a daily basis. She explained to police that she attempted to clean the room that morning, but received no response when she knocked. After trying again around midday and still getting no answer, she looked through the window and saw Mr Pierre lying motionless. Concerned, she entered the room and discovered him unresponsive, at which point she immediately notified the authorities. The Swedish Embassy has been informed of the incident and is working to contact Mr Pierre’s next of kin. A spokesperson for the Patong Police stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released once the results of the post-mortem are available. Impatient Motorcyclist Rides Through Railway Barrier, Wife Falls Off & Injured Picture courtesy of Amarin A woman, riding pillion on a motorcycle, was injured after she collided with a lowering railway barrier in Bangkok, in an incident that serves as a stark warning to road users about the dangers of ignoring safety signals. Full story:https://aseannow.com/topic/1358652-impatient-motorcyclist-rides-through-railway-barrier-wife-falls-off-injured/ -
Picture courtesy of Amarin A woman, riding pillion on a motorcycle, was injured after she collided with a lowering railway barrier in Bangkok, in an incident that serves as a stark warning to road users about the dangers of ignoring safety signals. A video clip, widely shared on Thai social media via the page “อยากดังเดี๋ยวจัดให้ รีเทิร์น part 6” (translated: “If You Want to Be Famous, I’ll Make You Famous – Return Part 6”), shows a man and woman attempting to cross a railway track on a motorcycle as the barrier was coming down to stop traffic for an approaching train. While the man managed to duck under, the barrier struck the woman riding behind him, knocking her off the vehicle. She sustained facial injuries and was seen staggering away from the railway line. The man stopped and ran back to assist her. The clip was captioned sarcastically: “If you’re in such a hurry, why didn’t you leave yesterday? Was it worth it?” The incident occurred near the level crossing adjacent to Wat Nang Nong on Wutthakat Road in Bang Kho district, Bangkok. The crossing, located on a bend, is controlled by railway staff and fitted with dual boom barriers. Locals report the barriers were only recently installed, replacing a previous wire-rope system. Reporters visited the scene and spoke with “Pa Kai”, a 72-year-old curry vendor whose stall is located near the crossing. Although she did not witness the actual moment of impact, she saw the aftermath as the injured woman tried to stand up before being helped to the roadside by her presumed partner. Emergency services later transported the victim to hospital. Pa Kai said this was not the first such incident. She admitted that many motorcyclists frequently ignore the barriers to avoid waiting for trains to pass, even though the wait time is usually only a few minutes. She recalled previous incidents where riders were injured after being struck by the barrier. “As a member of the community, I just want to urge people to stay calm and wait. It’s not worth risking your life or damaging property,” she said. Officials from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) have confirmed that crossing the barriers while they are in operation is a criminal offence. If a vehicle damages the railway’s property, such as hitting the barrier, the offender may face legal action. SRT officials are required to report such incidents to the police, and the Department of Land Transport may record the offence, potentially preventing the driver from renewing their licence. The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement and greater public awareness to prevent further injuries, or worse, at railway crossings across the country. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A family altercation turned deadly on the morning of 23 April, when a man fatally shot his younger brother in apparent self-defence after being attacked with a knife. Police were alerted to the incident at around 10:30 at a residence in Moo 7, Huai Yang Kham sub-district, Chun District, Phayao Province. Upon arrival at the scene, officers from Chun Police Station, led by Pol. Sub-Lt. Wirot Khrongkaphai, found a man lying seriously injured in front of the family home. The victim, later identified as Mr. Pattharasorn, had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Standing nearby was his elder brother, Mr. Wuttichai, who calmly surrendered himself to police. He admitted to shooting his brother and led officers to the firearm, which was recovered from a storage room at the back of the house. Rescue workers from the Norasingh Chun emergency unit rushed the injured man to Chun Hospital, but doctors later confirmed that Mr. Pattharasorn had succumbed to his injuries. According to a preliminary statement given to police, Mr. Wuttichai claimed that his younger brother had suffered a bout of violent mania and had chased him with a knife in an attempt to stab him. In fear for his life, he retrieved a gun and fired a single shot in self-defence. Medical staff from Chun Hospital have since joined police in conducting a formal autopsy. Authorities have launched an investigation to confirm the sequence of events and determine whether any criminal charges will be filed. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-04-24.

Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A crash has claimed the life of a man after he lost control of his pickup truck and it veered off a winding mountain road and plunged into a deep ravine. The incident occurred on April 22nd in the Dong Mada area, near Ban Huai San in Mae Suai District, Chiang Rai Province. Emergency responders from the Chiang Rai High-Altitude Rescue Unit were dispatched to the scene, located on the main road linking Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, a route known for its steep, twisting terrain. Upon arrival, rescuers found the pickup at the bottom of a ravine. A male driver was discovered dead at the scene. His body was recovered and transported by emergency teams, who also coordinated the removal of the vehicle from the hazardous location. Initial assessments suggest that the crash may have been caused by the driver falling asleep at the wheel. Authorities noted the road’s sharp curves and steep incline, which pose a significant risk to drivers who are not fully alert. Investigations are ongoing as officials work to gather evidence and contact the victim’s family to proceed with necessary arrangements. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-04-24.
