Picture courtesy of Naewna. The Crime Suppression Division (CSD) of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has arrested a former employee accused of forging legal documents and embezzling more than 13 million baht from her employer. On 10 August, Pol Lt Gen Jiraphop Puridej, Commander of the CIB, assigned Pol Maj Gen Wittaya Sriprasertphap, Commander of the Crime Suppression Division and his team to apprehend Ms Kritporn, also known as Natthaphan, aged 36. She was arrested on a Pattaya Provincial Court warrant (No. จ.439/2568 dated 30 July 2025) on charges of document forgery, using forged documents, embezzlement, fraud and theft from an employer. The arrest took place on Phonprapanmit Road, Pattaya. The investigation began after complaints were filed against Ms Kritporn, a former employee of a real estate company, who allegedly falsified ownership documents and used forged slips to transfer money 43 times during 2023. These fraudulent transactions caused damages totaling approximately 13,683,808 baht. She has faced legal action for fraud and theft of employer property. Following the complaints, the CSD launched a thorough investigation and tracked Ms Kritporn to Pattaya, where she had been residing after fleeing. Officers located and arrested her walking along Phonprapanmit Road. She was then taken to Nong Prue Police Station to face charges. Preliminary interrogation indicates that Ms Kritporn has confessed to all accusations. The case is ongoing as authorities continue legal proceedings. Adapted by Asean Now from Naewna 2025-08-12

Picture courtesy of CH7. A 64-year-old man has died after being struck on the head by a dislodged excavator bucket tooth while observing construction work in Mueang Buriram district. The incident occurred at around 13:00 on 10 August near Lam Huai Samor in Sa Kae Sam subdistrict. Mr. Saneh, a resident of Sa Lang Thon in Prakhon Chai district, had gone to watch a backhoe installing water pipes when the machine operator extended the arm to break obstructing tree branches. A bucket tooth, weighing about four kilograms, reportedly came loose after a locking bolt failed, flew off and struck him on the head. Emergency responders from the Sa Kae Phrong Subdistrict Administrative Organisation rushed him to Buriram Hospital in critical condition and unconscious. Despite the medical team’s efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on 11 August. His wife, Ms. Saengchan, 51, said she found a large indentation in her husband’s skull when touching his bandaged head at the hospital and believed he must have died at the scene. She called on the backhoe’s owner to take responsibility. His elder brother, Mr. Kaew, 68, added that the deceased was a poor farmer renting land for rice cultivation and also worked as a labourer to support his elderly mother-in-law. He stressed that the family wanted justice and compensation. Police Colonel Chamras Siriliang, superintendent of Mueang Buriram Police Station, has ordered investigators to summon the backhoe owner for questioning on suspicion of negligence causing death. Legal proceedings are now under way. Adapted by Asean Now from CH7 2025-08-12

Pictures courtesy of Matichon. Cybercrime officers issued a warning about a new type of cyberattack known as “Choicejacking,” which targets mobile phones via public charging stations. This advanced form of attack is an evolution of “Juice Jacking,” where hackers use disguised charging devices to trick phones into approving file transfers instead of just charging. The malicious device mimics a USB input to send commands that automatically grant permission for data transfer within milliseconds, often too fast for the user to notice. Some attacks exploit vulnerabilities in certain Android devices using the Android Open Accessory Protocol (AOAP). Once the hackers gain access, they can steal photos, read messages or install harmful software on the device immediately. Cyber police advise the public to avoid using unknown public charging devices found in airports, hotels, cafes and other public areas. Instead, they recommend carrying a personal power bank, plugging devices directly into a power outlet, enabling “charge only” mode and regularly updating software to protect against such threats. The authorities emphasised vigilance in protecting personal data in an increasingly connected world. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-08-12

Picture courtesy of Naewna A school student from Lom Sak Witthayakhom School in Phetchabun province acted swiftly to try to save the life of an elderly man seriously injured in a road crash. The incident occurred on the Ban Non Thong–Jang Wang road in Lan Ba subdistrict, Lom Sak district, when an electric bicycle collided with a six-wheeled truck. The elderly man riding the electric bike was left unconscious and severely injured by the roadside. As rescue teams rushed to the scene, Miss Kanyanat, the student, happened to be passing by on her way to school. Having received basic first aid and CPR training, she immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the man. Thanks to her quick and skilled response, she was able to maintain the injured man until medical responders arrived. The man was showing signs of life as the ambulance transported him to Lom Sak Hospital for further treatment. Sadly, despite the emergency care, the elderly man later succumbed to his injuries due to their severity. Witnesses at the scene expressed admiration for Kanyanat’s courage and prompt action. The local police, led by Lt. Sgt. Sangat Kamphaaphan, conducted an on-site investigation to proceed with legal matters related to the crash. Dr. Peerawat Chantakun, principal of Lom Sak Witthayakhom School, praised Kanyanat for her volunteer spirit and use of her life-saving skills. “It is truly commendable when students apply their knowledge in real emergency situations,” he said. The school plans to award her a certificate of recognition and fully support her ambitions to pursue further studies in the medical field. Adapted by Asean Now from Naewna 2025-08-12

Chonburi Police Warn Venues Face 5-Year Closure for Violations Picture courtesy of SiamRath The Provincial Police Chief of Chonburi has issued a firm directive targeting drug use and underage entry in entertainment venues, warning that any establishment found violating the rules will face closure for five years. Picture courtesy of SiamRath The Provincial Police Chief of Chonburi has issued a firm directive targeting drug use and underage entry in entertainment venues, warning that any establishment found violating the rules will face closure for five years. On 10 August, Pol. Maj. Gen. Thawatkiat Jindakhuansanong, Chonburi Provincial Police Chief, together with Pol. Col. Patikorn Sorchai, Deputy Chief of Chonburi Police, Mr. Patcharaput Srithanyanont, Bang Lamung District Chief, Pol. Col. Anek Sarathongyu, Chief of Pattaya Police Station and police officers from Nong Prue and Bang Lamung Police Stations, held a joint meeting with local business operators in Bang Lamung district. The meeting focused on implementing the “5 Freedoms” policy and the government’s “NO Drugs NO Dealers” campaign led by the Deputy Prime Minister. Pol. Maj. Gen. Thawatkiat emphasized that the government’s “NO Drugs NO Dealers” policy aligns with the Royal Thai Police’s “5 Freedoms” initiative, which aims for venues free of underage, drugs, weapons, prostitution and to ensure safety. Drug control is a key priority, especially regarding entertainment venues, where drug use and sales have been reported, including involvement by staff and allowing minors to enter. The meeting called on local business owners to cooperate closely with authorities to strengthen enforcement of the 5 Freedoms measures. Authorities have stepped up crackdowns on drug activity, particularly in venues prone to drug use and underage access. Mr. Patcharaput Srithanyanont, Bang Lamung District Chief, added that police and local administrative officials share the urgent mission to eradicate drugs nationwide. Bang Lamung’s entertainment venues are considered high-risk areas for drug offenses, requiring tight monitoring and cooperation. Business operators were urged to ensure that security staff prevent tourists and customers from bringing illegal items such as drugs and weapons into their premises. Any suspicious behaviour should be reported immediately to authorities. The police warned that this latest enforcement would be the final warning. If venues are found neglecting the rules by allowing underage patrons or tolerating drug use or sales, a formal request will be made to the provincial governor to order a five-year closure of the establishment. Authorities stressed that this measure is necessary but regrettable, as it would permanently bar such venues from operating. Adapted by Asean Now from SiamRath 2025-08-12

Thailand Urged to Build Frigates at Home to Boost Industry Picture courtesy of The Standard The Subcommittee on Equipment, ICT and Revolving Funds within the House of Representatives’ Budget Committee approved the Royal Thai Navy’s request for funding to procure a frigate valued at 17.5 billion baht. The Navy also sought Cabinet approval to amend an earlier resolution, allowing for the acquisition of two frigates in total, worth 35 billion baht, though funding is currently available for only one vessel. Picture courtesy of The Standard The Subcommittee on Equipment, ICT and Revolving Funds within the House of Representatives’ Budget Committee approved the Royal Thai Navy’s request for funding to procure a frigate valued at 17.5 billion baht. The Navy also sought Cabinet approval to amend an earlier resolution, allowing for the acquisition of two frigates in total, worth 35 billion baht, though funding is currently available for only one vessel. While this does not yet guarantee that both ships will be built, the move signals a stronger government commitment to securing funding for two frigates. The Navy’s plan is to construct the vessels in Thailand, aiming to revitalise the country’s long-stagnant shipbuilding industry, which has suffered from limited capacity and investment. The Navy currently operates only four frigates, well short of its minimum requirement of eight, underscoring the urgency of the procurement. Frigates play a crucial role in national defence. Building both ships domestically would encourage private sector confidence and make investments in capacity expansion more worthwhile. Crucially, this project would keep a portion of military spending within the Thai economy rather than sending it entirely overseas. Many countries with well-planned defence strategies integrate domestic defence industries into their national security framework, ensuring these industries can survive long term. However, there are concerns. In the past, some have argued that the first vessel should be built abroad to gain technical know-how before domestic production begins. Critics note that this approach contradicts the stated purpose of the budget request to Parliament and point to the Navy’s previous experience when HTMS Bhumibol Adulyadej was built in South Korea. At the time, the Navy promised the second frigate would be built locally, but instead opted to purchase submarines from abroad, leaving local shipyards idle. Given that the Navy has already acquired foreign shipbuilding expertise, opponents argue there is no need to “learn” again overseas. Technology for hull construction changes little over time, and weapon and sensor systems can be integrated under foreign supervision in domestic shipyards. Several Thai shipyards have already declared they can build a frigate in-country from the first vessel, rendering the overseas-first argument weak. There is little dispute over the necessity of frigates for Thailand’s defence. The real question is whether the procurement plan will genuinely benefit the Thai economy. If managed properly, this project could become a turning point for the country’s struggling shipbuilding sector. To achieve this, the Navy must assure the government and taxpayers that the frigates will indeed be built in Thailand from the outset, fulfilling the true purpose of the 17.5 billion baht investment. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A long-running feud between two older men in Surat Thani ended in tragedy when a second confrontation in the same afternoon turned deadly, leaving one man dead from a sickle attack. Police Captain Prawat Srithape, investigating officer at Kanchanadit Police Station, received a report at 4:53 PM of a fatal assault on a road in front of a shrimp pond in Baan Bo Cholok, Moo 4, Thung Kong subdistrict, Kanchanadit district. Officers from the investigative unit, forensic team, and rescue workers were dispatched to the scene. They found the body of Mr. Sunthorn, 63, lying in a pool of blood with a deep, fatal wound to the back of his head and another cut to his left wrist. The suspect, Mr. Manot, 57, was arrested shortly afterwards near the scene. Initial investigations revealed that earlier in the day, the two men encountered each other at a nearby shop and began arguing loudly. Local residents stepped in to break up the quarrel and both men walked away. However, later, Mr. Manot returned and the argument reignited. During the second confrontation, Mr. Manot allegedly grabbed a pruning sickle and struck Mr. Sunthorn on the wrist and the back of the head, causing him to collapse and die on the spot. He fled but was swiftly tracked down and arrested. Police say the suspect has confessed and will face charges of murder. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-08-12

Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A man fishing in a rural canal in Chonburi got more than he bargained for when he pulled up his line expecting a large fish, only to find a baby crocodile dangling from the hook. The unusual catch occurred in Moo 3, Hua Thanon subdistrict, Phanat Nikhom district, Chonburi, where Mr. Pornsak, 35, had been fishing in a natural waterway running through rice fields. He told reporters he had taken several days off work and decided to catch fish for a meal, setting 30 baited fishing lines along the canal. As evening approached, he went to check them before heading home. One rod was bent and shaking violently, leading him to believe he had hooked a sizeable fish. But when he hauled the line from the water, he was shocked to find a small crocodile instead. He brought the reptile ashore and uncertain of what to do with his catch, he contacted local authorities to inspect and removed it. He also warned nearby residents to be cautious, fearing the baby’s mother might still be in the canal. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-08-12

Picture courtesy of Daily News. A 19-year-old woman who hurled a corrosive substance at her former boyfriend has surrendered to police, claiming she acted out of anger after he brought a new girlfriend to taunt her at her workplace and failed to repay borrowed money. The incident occurred inside a shopping mall in Bang Phli district, where the 21-year-old victim was working. Witnesses said the man screamed in pain as the chemical burned his skin, before being rushed to hospital in serious condition. The attacker fled the scene but was quickly identified by police. The suspect, identified only as Ms B, turned herself in to Bang Kaew Police Station, where she was questioned by Pol Lt Col Sthaman Prasertsuwan. She admitted to dousing her ex-boyfriend with a mixture of two brands of toilet cleaner, which she prepared in a cold drink tumbler before approaching him. According to Ms B, she and the victim had lived together for around three months, during which he allegedly contributed nothing to living expenses and borrowed more than 30,000 baht from her to make motorcycle payments and cover other costs. She eventually asked him to leave the shared accommodation, though they continued to see each other occasionally. Tensions escalated after she discovered he had a new girlfriend. When attempts to reclaim the debt failed, she damaged his motorcycle in June, a case still under mediation. Matters came to a head when, the day before the attack, the victim and his new partner allegedly confronted her at work, hurling insults and threats. Ms B told police she bottled her anger overnight before riding to his workplace the next day to “get even.” Spotting him sitting and using his phone, she greeted him with a “peek-a-boo” before throwing the corrosive liquid at his torso, insisting she did not intend to hit his face. Police have charged her with assault causing injury and will proceed with legal action.
