The barge was carrying 4,000 tons of granite on a route from Songkhla to Singapore when water entered the barge’s hull, causing the vessel to tilt to its starboard side. The incident occurred in the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 3 nautical miles from the mouth of Thepha’s waterway, in Songkhla province, at coordinates Lat 6°54.1326’N Long 101°00.0676’E. Despite attempts to pump the water out, the vessel began to sink, with half of the barge submerged . The tugboat is owned by CHG Marine Services PTE. LTD., and its local representative is Lion Oil Limited. Upon receiving the distress signal, the crew of the CHG 11 was able to safely tow the barge to a shallow area for salvage operations. Authorities are urgently investigating the tragic deaths of a family of four, after a woman allegedly shot and killed her husband, a former municipal councillor, along with their two teenage children, before taking her own life in a luxury home. On October 7, at 15:00, Pol. Col. Banterng Laowcharoen, the superintendent of Muang Songkhla Police Station, received a report of four bodies found inside a two-story house in Soi Saiburi 49, Boyang Subdistrict, Songkhla Province. Police, forensic teams, and rescue services were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found the body of the 62-year-old homeowner near the front door, and the body of his 15-year-old son on the living room sofa. Upstairs, the body of the 40-year-old wife was found in the bedroom, holding a 9mm handgun, while the body of their 17-year-old daughter was discovered in another bedroom. Initial investigations suggest that the wife shot her husband, who was a former local government councillor, as well as her son, a 10th-grade student at a prestigious local school, and her daughter, a 12th-grader preparing for university entrance exams, before turning the gun on herself. Police suspect the motive may stem from family-related issues, but further investigation is ongoing, with relatives being questioned for more details. The investigation continues as authorities seek to understand the full circumstances behind this event. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-08

UPDATE Fire Erupts in Pattaya Beer Bar and Guesthouse, Guests Trapped Inside A fire broke out early on October 7, at a beer bar and guesthouse located at 219/33, Soi 13/1, Beach Road, Nong Prue, Bang Lamung, Chonburi. The fire caused chaos as six guests, including one foreign tourist were trapped inside the building. The blaze started around 08:00 in a five-story commercial building, with the fire originating on the ground floor. The flames blocked the entrance, preventing some residents from escaping. Firefighters arrived quickly and extinguished the fire, eventually gaining control of the situation. Rescuers then managed to bring the trapped residents out of the building, the foreign tourist was spotted on a second floor balcony and firefighters reached him by ladder, but were able to escort out through the building. One person suffered from respiratory issues caused by smoke inhalation and was taken to Bang Lamung Hospital. The ground floor, which operated as a beer bar, suffered fire damage, while the upper floors, used as guest rooms, were not directly damaged by the fire but were filled with smoke. Emergency responders immediately worked to ventilate the building to clear the smoke. Wannee Phanlai, 42, the guesthouse caretaker, explained that she was resting on the fifth floor when she received a phone call informing her of the fire. In a panic, she rushed downstairs, encountering smoke. She attempted to escape and found the fire crew already trying to put out the fire. She suspects the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit, as she heard an explosion while firefighters were battling the blaze. Initial investigations are being conducted by Pol. Lt. Anan Mahakit-Asawakul from Pattaya City Police Station, and forensic teams are expected to further investigate the cause of the fire. -- 2024-10-07 -
I have gone back over all the reports and images from the scene. There were very few good images available when the original post was written. I don’t believe those are scrap marks, just shadows on a poor quality picture. (best that was available at the time). Below are further images, which have become available later, one shows the location of the 2 girls bodies (in the red box) and the other clearly shows no marks on the road beyond the bike. All reports say the pickup was travelling the wrong way against the traffic.

As the flood situation in Chiang Mai continues to pose challenges, despite the gradual decline in the Ping River’s water level, many families remain in need of food supplies. Certain areas have become inaccessible to larger relief vehicles, making it difficult to deliver essential aid. In a resourceful response, Phra Kru Aod, a monk from Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai, has taken the initiative to use two elephants under his care, “Khun Saen” and “Saen Thap,” to deliver supplies to flood victims in these hard-to-reach areas. The elephants have been able to traverse areas where six-wheel trucks could not, ensuring that much-needed aid reaches stranded residents. A Facebook user, “Sandy Aloha,” shared a reassuring update on the situation, encouraging the public not to worry about the elephants’ safety. The post highlighted that the animals walked down the center of the road, accompanied by their mahouts and a rescue team. The elephants were closely monitored to ensure they did not step on dangerous objects like nails or water pipes. Concerns were quickly allayed as the animals were under constant supervision throughout their journey. This initiative, led by Phra Kru Aod, highlights the unity, compassion, and resilience of the Chiang Mai community as they come together to support those affected by the floods. With creative solutions like these, the community continues to push through the challenges of the ongoing crisis. Picture from Facebook. -- 2024-10-07

The driver of a pick-up truck carrying workers lost control and plowed into a roadside som tam shop, leaving one person dead and five others injured. A som tam vendor narrowly escaped after hearing the pick-up and running for cover just in time. On October 6, Pol. Capt. Suranun Meephan, an investigator with Ao Noi Police Station, responded to an emergency call about a pick-up truck veering off the road and crashing into a shop. The incident occurred on a rural highway connecting Ban Nong Yai Aem to Baan Nok in Moo 15, Ban Rai Yub, Ao Noi Subdistrict, Mueang District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. Rescue workers from Sawang Prachuap Thammasathan Foundation were dispatched to assist the victims and transport them to Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital. At the scene, police found a white Toyota 4WD pick-up truck, license plate number from Prachuap, that had crashed off the side of the road. A crowd of onlookers gathered nearby, and tyre marks stretched approximately 50 metres, indicating the vehicle had lost control. The roadside som tam shop was in ruins, grills toppled, and the tiled roof shattered. A cow near the shop, had also been injured in the collision. Of the six people involved, two men and three women were injured, while one man, identified as 68-year-old Sombun Plai-ngam, succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. According to witnesses, the truck was carrying six workers, all related, from Ban Nong Mai Kaen and heading to work on a pineapple farm in Ban Nikhom Kilo 8. The vehicle veered off the road, hitting the cow before crashing into the som tam shop, scattering goods and causing significant damage. As the truck lost control, the passengers were thrown from the vehicle, resulting in injuries and one fatality. Ms. Chanphen, also known as May, a 32-year-old som tam vendor, recounted that she was preparing her stall as usual when she heard the vehicle lose control. In a split second, she abandoned her stall and ran to safety. “The truck crashed into the shop, toppling everything. Only the front part of the shop remains intact. I was so scared—if I hadn’t jumped out of the way, I wouldn’t have survived,” she said. Ms. Chanphen also mentioned that she usually brings her child to sit in front of the shop in the mornings, right where the truck crashed. Fortunately, on that day, she had left her child at home, narrowly avoiding what could have been a tragic outcome. Notorious Conwoman Arrested for Infiltrating Thai Parliament in Disguise Police have arrested a notorious conwoman who had been posing as a high-ranking official to infiltrate the Thai parliament. Dressed in a white uniform adorned with official insignia, she mingled with members of parliament (MPs) and senators. Full story : https://aseannow.com/topic/1339990-notorious-conwoman-arrested-for-infiltrating-thai-parliament-in-disguise/ -
Police have arrested on October 5, a notorious conwoman, known as “Nam Nueng,” who had been posing as a high-ranking official to infiltrate the Thai parliament. Dressed in a white uniform adorned with official insignia, she mingled with members of parliament (MPs) and senators, pretending to be part of the political elite. The suspect, a 47-year-old woman identified as Suwadee (surname withheld), was apprehended following a police investigation after a warrant was issued by the Dusit District Court. She was arrested on charges of impersonating a public official by wearing a uniform to deceive others into believing she had official authority. The Metropolitan Police, led by Pol. Lt. Gen. Thiti Saengsawang and his investigative team, tracked Suwadee to a hotel in the Lat Krabang district. In her possession were multiple disguises, including a white official uniform with royal decorations, a black cloak embroidered with the words “Parliament,” and another with “Office of the Prime Minister.” Suwadee’s criminal history spans over a decade, with 14 prior fraud cases to her name, including scams involving construction contracts, investments in businesses, and more recently, impersonating government officials. Her deceptions have netted her millions of baht from unsuspecting victims across the country. Suwadee’s fraudulent activities date back to 2010, starting with small-scale scams such as issuing bad cheques and pretending to be a contractor. However, by 2017, her tactics evolved, and she began impersonating high-profile figures, claiming to be the niece of a prominent university rector and enticing victims to invest in fictitious business ventures. By 2021, she was posing as an assistant to former Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, duping individuals into believing she could secure government positions for them. Among her numerous scams was the infamous “Lung Tu Plus Card” scheme, where she swindled a victim out of 1.7 million baht, promising high returns through an exclusive investment. Her most recent con involved her wearing an official uniform to gain access to parliament, where she posed for photos with well-known MPs and senators. The turning point in Suwadee’s latest scheme came during a Senate meeting on 20 August 2024, when a senator raised concerns about a suspicious individual wandering the halls of parliament. The senator’s alert led to a police investigation, eventually uncovering Suwadee’s real identity and criminal past. After fleeing, she sought refuge with a famous fortune teller, moving between hotels in Bangkok to evade capture. However, police surveillance led to her arrest on 5 October. Investigators found official uniforms, political party ID cards, and a Toyota Camry she had used to stash her disguises. During questioning, Suwadee denied all charges, claiming she had merely borrowed the uniform from a friend to take photographs for her future campaign as an MP. She insisted that a senator, with whom she had personal disputes, was behind the allegations. Despite her denials, police have confirmed that Suwadee has a long history of fraud. Although she claims to have resolved many of her cases by repaying victims, she is still facing legal battles, including a recent conviction for the “Lung Tu Plus” scheme, for which she was sentenced to three years in prison, currently under appeal. Authorities are now taking steps to ensure such security breaches do not occur again, with parliament tightening its regulations on access to the building. Suwadee remains in custody as the investigation continues, and she will likely face additional charges for her most recent crimes. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. -- 2024-10-06
