It was just an extra 1000 baht, got the single re entry the same day as applied for the extension. I was told that the new re entry was needed because the under consideration period can be past the expiry date of current extension. My under consideration date was 2 weeks past expiry of the existing extension, so new single re entry was to that new date. IO at airport thought it funny to stamp me in for only 48 hours.

I believe once you apply for the extension, you will need a new re entry permit, the existing one is not valid. Sort with the office about home visit, and yes you are allowed to go during under consideration period, as I have done it last year.
