  1. I'm looking for a place to watch Washington v. Dallas on Monday 13 September at 7:00 am. What about the UN? I can listen to my games (Washington Redskins) on www.wmal.com. Who's your team?

The only place I can thank of that has UBC and opens at 8 AM and would show the game is Mad Dog. Not to many bars are going to be open at that time of the morning. Ill be at home watching the game.

Will they be showing the NBC Sunday Night Games from America? Any Preseason action? What about internet feeds? I noticed I can get cnbc for 9.95 per month ala carte and bloomberg for free online.

  3. Lampun

There is a little estate of "houses from the king" on the way in from San Patong, 2up, 2 down for 390,000bht

I believe you can move in for 2,000bht and pay 2,000bht a month (forever .... well your gf could)

Not many people have mentioned it's a factory town, for those of you that don't know the factories only employ ladies.

So the population is about 10:1 females to guys, on Fridays and Saturdays, that's a lot of females out on the lookout.

My pals sometimes go up there to get laid ..... no payment required.

Nothing else to do there, but it' not too far from ChiangMai so you might not go completely insane.

Nice restaurants near the river just beyond the train station.

That's hilarious. I got picked up by four girls from the pickle factory one time. They were extra nice. Insisted on giving me a ride to my door.

On my fist trip to Lamphun, me and another farang, stumbled across the river restaurants. The one we went to was great and resonable, the larger, fancier place seemed real expensive. We easily found some kind of street music with large beer promotion and nice people. As far as real estate, the prime locations are expensive (like CM, not BKK), but I think the other posters have given accurate rental prices.

  4. Not a lawyer, niether are the immigration officers, but here is my interpretation:

    could buy and sell condominiums.....

could trade stocks online (but not be a broker or paid advisor).....

could give online english lessons outside of Thailand......

could do legal research for clients outside of Thailand..............

could do web design (as stated above) outside.....

None of these would should even be considered "grey area". Might be good to know a Thai lawyer, just in case you have to explain yourself. Working as a volunteer would be, though, because technically volunteers need work permits.

Where and how you get paid could make a difference. Interesting topic.

  5. I think 30 is above average for CM, and even more so for Chiang Rai. They have gotten more strict, but the qualifications are fairly low, as are the salaries. I think the 4000 missionaries help bring down wages. The wife can afford the low pay, while they collect money from their churches. Paperwork will be worse than an IRS problem. The 15 day visa thing at Mae Sai must have really thinned the crowd out. There used to be lots of teachers on the visa run trips. They are also breeding TEFL teachers up at CMU. BKK, if you must. Making them pay a retainer fee would be advisable.

  6. I've considered investing in Hermosillo, Sonora, MX, but gee whiz, about 25,000 murdered in the last three or four years of the drug war. They almost swear that they leave the Americans alone..... www.elimparcial.com

I'm actually heading back to CM soon, and did consider Chiang Rai. I also considered BKK, which I like, but for the food and drink and rent value; I will be returning to CNX. I value some great business relationships in CNX, and feel real good about handing them some THB for food and drink. A small but world class city. An outstanding place to telecommute for farangs.

  7. There is nothing good to say about night life in Chiang Mai if you are a farang male. There are discos/clubs such as Warm Up, Riverside, Monkey Club. But try making a move on any of the girls there and see how fast the Thai guys warn you off or try and push you away. I've now been attacked 3 times in these places because I tried to talk to Thai girls (the guys don't do it openly: usually they wait till you go to the toilet, then come with a couple of their friends and grab you by the throat as you open the door). They're fine if you go to 'farangland', Loi Kroh etc, but move in on their territory (Nimmanhamen area etc) and they don't like it one bit.

Oh, of course they're not really Thais: I should have said Chinese-Thais, the ones who run everything here.

That's strange, I have exactly the opposite reaction by Thai males and find night life in CM to be amongst the best in the world. (and I'm not talking about whoring, just about going out, having a good time and meeting people, male and female, maybe finding a gf)

My mates and I on our weekly "males only" nights head straight for the Thai only areas to hit on young university students. Guys, girls and ladyboys always approach us, we laugh at their poor attempts to speak English, they laugh at our poor attempts to speak Thai, but after a few drinks nobody cares and we get down to the serious business of sneakily squeezing each others bums ......

OK so I admit to being an equal opportunities bum squeezer., why not TIT.

    PS

Monkey is awful ... too crowded

No.1 bar and all other joints on/near Loi Krow awful (might be OK for a couple of visits a year if you don't mind mixing with pros)

Spicey too awful to visit under any circumstances unless you need a last minute pro, and don't mind being drugged and robbed.

    PPS

To fit in with the Thais you don't sit and nurse a solitary beer, you buy a bottle of whiskey + mixers, or the 5 large bottles of beer promotion. Men don't pour their own drinks, girls do that for you. I'm always amazed at the number of white guys who never learn to do this.

I agree with most of this. I just don't like ice in my beer, though. I've been to Day-li about 50 times, and it is about 90% Thais. Never had anything even close to a confrontation in there. Cops came to clear a fire lane one time, other than that, no fights, no puking, great prices, smoking area, some great food.........half price of Loi Kroi. Monkey was OK, but maybe not worth the money, but it would still be cheap by Sukhumvit standards. I had great food at Warm-up, but it's jsut a little younger, and a little more crowded, loud for me. Did see BiB rolling in as me and a friend were leaving. That can be a by-product of the early 20s crowd. That VW Bus with the promotion is kind of cool, too. Opposite side of Thapae Gate is more Thai, fewer farang, more students, lower prices........I know great places on all four sides.

  8. Mae Sai is fake on the Cubans. I know real ones for sure at Siam-Havana Cigars at Sala Daeng in the lobby of the Dusit Thani Hotel. There is also a place called "A Perfect Evening" that may be on wireless. Both in BKK. I've heard maybe a place near Riverside, but I haven't verified it. In general, cigar prices are high in CM.

  9. I am booked here:

    ://newmitrapap.com/

    7 nights---2310.00

Thanks for the tip. I see it listed on agoda for 10 per night us inc. everything. good deal for air-con room.

  10. I saw this guy last month. about the 5th, he is massive! Also I think and I hope I know where to look. If I am right I will re-post here after I notify BIB.

I also doubt I get the chance, with this video and the user base he is tagged big time one move in public will get him nailed.

PS keep your eyes open, soi 7 soi 5 the alley Sukhumvit and Foodland

Interesting. The only time I was ever offered steroids (in Thailand) was on Sukhumvit Rd, close to the Marriot. And it was a farang, who was about 5'11", 210 lbs., and had massive arms. I'm pretty sure that was August 2004. Is there a Gym over there?, which absolutely seems to be where the roid heads congregate.

  11. Help could anybody say where this wonderful place is ? I'm new in CM and like it

Can we mention that Number #1 is a quality bar? It has nothing to do with prostitution. I go there with family and everything and is probably one of the best regular expat bars in town.

Yes, and it has two of the BETTER pool tables in Chiang Mai bars. The balls actually go straight when you hit them. The women are friendly, but not invasive if you don't want them to be. And, they won't stand for being "mauled" either.

Number 1 Bar was a respectable place during the two years I lived in CM. I actually like to find places with better beer prices than 7-11, just for the hel_l of it. That used to bring me to Jai-Yen where it was two large Chang for 80 THB (place is gone), or Day-li (west side, below Nimenhimen), which had 3 large Leo for 120 THB. I would be inclined to go to John's Place if I am going out in the touristy area, and I have a VIP card for 20% off drinks, all the time. They are consistent. I would like to see them eject a certain group, that has caused too many fights to count, many with each other. It is still a lot calmer than "Spicy", and the owner John is really good proprieter, who is respected in the community.

Tuskers is real nice; I especially like half price Fridays, and the Thai Visa parties had super good BBQ (A+).

  12. it came today at 10:30. A free Double. Only cost 4.90 each way with Priority and I tracked it there for 70 cents. Ten Dollars and fifty cents. Door to Door was 10 days including two weekends. I'm glad that I didn't call them and bother them on Friday.

I will give my first experience with www.thaiconsulatela.org an "A".

  13. I might get slammed a little for this, but I thought there were so many (I'm concentrating on Americans here, I'll do a Korean post later if there is demand! :whistling:) because:

    1. You get your church back home to pay you an American wage whilst you live in Thailand with much lower living expenses.
    2. It allows you to send your kids to Grace International and so get a virtually free high quality (American colonial?) international education, paid for by poor unsuspecting church contributors back home.
    3. You can now live in a 20,000 Baht plus (rent) home in World club and eat out with the family at Dukes, Sojo's etc. on a regular basis with all your spare cash.
    4. You get at least one large SUV to ferry the family around in - I'm sure they are not free, but all seem to have them...
    5. You can have a maid full time; something completely unattainable back home. The list goes on...

Should I get my coat? Flack jacket?

Now I might be being a bit disingenuous, but it does seem to me that REAL Christian would forego a lot of this and ensure that the cash was spent on ruining the spiritual life of the natives... instead of doing the really Christian thing and LEAVING THEM THE <deleted> ALONE!

Although... maybe I'm wrong? What do you think? Maybe they are doing really valuable work, and making good use of church funds, saving souls, being selfless, and making the world a better place. God knows it needs it!

...and maybe I came to Thailand for the food and culture... :jap:

I agree with about all of this. Appearances are everything, especially in Thailand. Lots of teachers need to learn the same thing.

I wonder how many of them claim to have converted their housekeepers? The pastor at my parents church makes about 100K per year (USD); he's worth about 30K, and would be worth about 5K in Chiangmai. It's also hilarious that the Rimping Supermarket is right there in missionaryville; I would almost never shop there.
