Yesterday at the bar I got into a heated debate with a local thai man. He was adamant that farangs aren't allowed to find fair skinned thai women attractive and that we must stick to the brown variety. I couldn't believe my ears and neither could he when I told him that I no longer find darker skinned thai women all that attractive. My tastes have evolved since moving here and he wasn't happy about that. Seems we farangs (at least in the eyes of thai men) should only date who they think we should be dating. Anything else is unacceptable and incomprehensible to the thai male. I explained that attraction is subjective and can evolve over time but he was having none of it and stood firm.. I think it goes without saying that I won't be taking his advice and will go for what I am attracted to, not what some washed up old Thai bloke thinks I should be attracted to!

Japan is better than Thailand in almost every conceivable way and the people are well mannered, orderly and law abiding.

You are correct. Saving face is an extremely childlike facet of Thai culture. It shows a serious lack of character and very low self-esteem if you are in need of constant validation, especially as a man.

Driving conditions are, on the whole, absolutely horrendous in Thailand. You are literally taking your life in your own hands each and every time you go on the road, car or bike.. It will take an enormous cultural shift to change things, and with all thais thinking they are the best and most competent drivers (whilst facts show the direct opposite) - I don't think anything will change in the near future.

Thais are the masters at making pathetic, wimpy excuses for anything and everything! Sad but true.

Tell that to that Thai male. With whom ego and face trumps all. They will willingly and knowingly plunge themselves and their families into immense debt in order to maintain their status and level of face. Face and status are paramount in this society.
