Gotta blame someone
Don't want these kids getting addicted to tea and coffee; they might just ravage a starbucks or something

That's standard in Arab countries. It's called "hell" and tastes not to bad. Your wife knows this culture?I got coriander in my coffee this morning .

They clearly don't know anything about history calling themselves "the gang of four."
Do they even know where that name comes from? Mao, purges, murder, uprooting of families, destruction of the educated classes
Whats next; Thaui rouge?

I'm looking to start or buy a small business that I don't have to work too hard at, doesn't hurt anyone and isn't involved with bar girls or partying. It doesn't have to make me rich, just enough to live comfortable somewhere in Chiang Mai province, which is variable depending on the business.
So... any suggestions on business/locations and their ballpark buy/start price to generate 30K per month net profit?
Added: BTW: I'm not interested in the ROI. Most investors are looking to recoup their investment in 5-10 years. I'm just looking for a perpetual ATM so I don't care if it breaks even in 15 or even 20!
Successful businesses are ones where the owner/operator is passionate about what they do
Since you only care about making a profit I would say any business you open is doomed to fail
Try a fixed interest bank account insteadB)

I'm going on and on about this, because it seems we have come to a point where we believe mediocrity is excellence... we begin to believe our own bullshit.... we begin to believe we can excel and be paid more by sitting and protesting and blaming others. What happened to working hard for a decent wage?!
No wonder Thailand is a peaceful, third world country.... there are wonderful things about it, but hard working, progressive, honest are NOT three adjectives I associate with the country.... maybe this is what we should strive to be, instead of finger pointing, nose picking whiners.... Let's go forward!!! [Chalerm, can you read this, lols]
I know plenty of hard working Thai people, and yu'p for sure there are plenty that don't,
I wonder just what you would think a fair wage for the day on a Thai construction sight for YOURSELF? I'll wager you would not do it for 300 Baht huh???
A Thai can live on 300 baht per day much easier than an American working for minimum wage in the US can.

You/we (westerners) represent less than 0.3% of the population, you get to live here, eat inexpensive food, pay almost no tax, enjoy a warm climate and have frequent sex with beautiful women, what do you want next, voting privileges! Quit whinging.
Oh yes, that's right, we're all 'honoured guests' aren't we.
Correct.
Then I'm sure you would agree that these foreigner students protesting in the USA have no right either.
-
If you are prepared to risk deportation go ahead. Never had sympathy for protesters of any kind who disrupt peoples lives and business.
You come from a land of milk and honey, where all is given and there is no reason to protest. I dont have Sympathy for people who have no Sympathy.
That is nonsense. Poor Thais have it better than people living in poverty in the US. At least they don't risk being shot while walking to school.
Just read an article today in my home paper about a 15 year old boy who was shot 3 times in the head and torso with a shotgun after answering "what?" when two gangbangers pulled up and shouted a gang slogan at him.

What utter hypocrisy!!!
Well, culture ministry....its our country, our culture and we will sell what we like.

right you are! because only stupid people make big money and spend big money. the intelligent ones (IQ most probably 150+) buy old jeeps and rebuild them.In the US, wasting money is stupid. In Thailand it is Big Face.
I spent 20k rebuilding and old Jeep - my F-I-L wqs quick to tell everyone I spent 150k.
Here, the more you waste the bigger and more stupid you are.
Yes, I would agree with that. Anybody who spends hundrrds of thousands of dollars on a car absolutely is stupid

"The labour minister said he would wear moustache, sun glasses and a hat to prevent protesters from recognizing him when he would venture in disguise into the protest site together with a special police team tasked with arresting Mr Suthep."
That sounds like a lot abuse of ear medicine.
"That sounds like a lot abuse of ear medicine."
Or a sense of humour, the recognition of which seems to have passed you by. I'll wager my version is probably nearer the truth.
Well, this proves how naive and gullible some posters are
I know, I love it when Thais come out with utter nonsense like this and some silly westerner says "oh, you must have misunderstood, or oh; they must be joking" or the most common one "it must be the language barrier"
Uhhhhh........noooooo........they are being serious

I tried a couple Cooper's bottles before here in BKK, and didn't come away as a big fan... But I can't remember if the Extra Stout variety was one of them I tried or not.
If I had tried it and liked it, I'm sure I would have remembered. Beer Lao Dark, on the other hand, I certainly know and like.
But BLD is in a whole different, milder, lighter league from brews like native Guinness or even the Young's Double Chocolate Stout.
I'm surprised the company that imports Cooper's doesn't import their Dark Ale...It's like Beer Lao Dark but has a stronger flavor profile with some delightful chocolate notes... But I grew up on Cooper's in my formative years and have a soft spot for it. Having just returned from a trip back home, I got to sample some of the craft beer revolutionaries that are popping up, hopefully we can see them in Thailand in there near(ish) future.
I'm not a fan of the Extra Stout, it's somewhere between Guiness and Khlong Water - wich depending where you sit on the tasting spectrum could be fantastic
I've used Wishbeer once, only disappointing thing was 3 of my beers were expired, customer service from the owner was handled very well I might add. Thoroughly enjoyed the BrewDog lineup that I purchased and would definitely go back for them, I was left a little "neither here nor there" on the Rogue beers that I got.
Beer Lao dark is not bad, but its not an ale.
Would like to rty some different Coopers though; I found the sparkling ale better than the pale ale.

So, let us know about other Micro-Breweries. What is this one in Dao Kanong?
The one in Dao Kanong is the Holland brewery on Rama !! mentioned earlier. Haven't been there yet but I assume it's somewhat similar to Tawan Daeng; German style lagers (although TW does have a weiss ale).
Not bad but I certainly prefer English or Belgian ales or US micro ales.
BTW, tried the Youngs Choc. stout yesterday; excellent!!

Can you please prove to us that he is not a Thai citizen?
No country can ever 'deport' it's own citizen. If he was a citizen, they would have used the word 'exile'. In any case it was widely reported in the media, and a simple google search will provide you all the details you need. He is 70yrs old, claims to have come here as a young child but never taken citizenship in the 50+ years he has been here.
I'm not sure if he holds a passport or not; but to many Thais it would make no difference. To most Thais that I have come across, and Indian or Westerner holding a valid Thai passport is still not Thai.
One Thai told me once about the Indian community here; "I don't care if they have lived here 100,000,000 years and have a passport, not they, nor their children are Thai, have ever been Thai or will ever be Thai."
In most Thai minds, a foreigner is someone who is not ethnically Thai, regardless of the fact that they "may" have a Thai passport and hold citizenship.
A good portion of people you may designate at "Thai" are actually not ethnic Thai. Lao, Khmer, Malay, Hill Tribe, Chinese etc.
You are correct, especially with regard to hill tribe and Malay, however try telling someone from Surin or Nong Khai they are not Thai and I'm sure you will get an earfull.

If per the article he is truly a Thai citizen, as it appears he states then they cannot deport him, and if they do it is a violation of international human rights......PTP democracy in action again it seems
If his birth certificate states he was born out side of Thailand and he has never bothered to be granted Thai citizenship, Surprise he is a Farang, and has no right to become involved in a violent political conflict and defy the laws of your host country!
That my friend is the law of the Thai nation, for all of us Farangs and if we do not want to be kicked out of the country we best abide by the law, which he failed to do! I hope he closes the door on the way out!
Cheers
He is not a farang, he is from India
The so called correct term would be kaek

What are their views about the Chinese settlers who are also foreigners?
In the past there have been incidents of purges and massacres of Chinese Thais, but it seems nowadays that the ones who hold citizenship are considered Thai.
But thats just my take, ask some Thais if you really want to know. However, there is a term for them; not considered very nice. "jek."

Can you please prove to us that he is not a Thai citizen? So special laws for Indians ?
He was warned like all foregners .
Thai leaders/voters were not arrested ,yet as the Police and government stated it may exacerbate the tensions.
If this guy was so well respected/connected it could not happen ,I hope his supporters have deep pockets.Good riddance to law breakers they only make lifeharder for us who play by the rules, the foreign drug dealers pimps boiler room scammers,if you can't do the time don't do the crime,I am minded the authorities are sufficently corrupt that he'll pay off and shut up if he knows what's good for him ,Lord Buddha was Nepalese and Indians are pretty near the bottom in Thai thinking as anyone familiar with local "nicknames" jek,kek and falang will know..

Yeah, I can sink a Beer Lao Dark in a tight corner. Curiously though it does taste better just marginally below ambient (not in April). It does have quite an interesting flavour when allowed to offer them up and it does taste like some thought went into it.
I did say "tight corner", didn't I?
Coopers was my "best choice" 5 years ago here but it will never see the light of day for me now. It doesn't offer anything over Beer Lao Dark and is twice the price!
On another note I have discovered a Thai Micro Brewery in touching distance of BKK....anybody interested?
Which micro brewery is that? Is it the one in dao kanong?

A farang resisting arrest, when blatantly caught.
The police will enjoy teaching him some manners, manners for people who aren't rich enough to knock them down and drag them to death in a ferrari of course.
Remember the black guy Simon in Phuket a few years getting cheeky with the immigration official, then instead of going home and back to work he spent the next 2 months in a Thai cell until he found his manners.
He is clearly not a "farang" nor would any Thai consider him as such.

Yes, that is the norm. You also have "milds" and some bitters with an abv of 2.8% to 3.5%. The low alcohol makes these "session beers", which means that you can enjoy many of them without getting too drunk. You can have 3 or 4 in a weekday without getting a hangover or you can have 1 or 2 without leaving your car behind. Also, alcoholic drinks are taxed according to alcohol strength, and thus making the low alcohol beers cheaper.
For me, I like the fact that I can drink many of these and enjoy the fantastic taste without getting too tipsy.
Another interesting fact is that the most popular American beers used the British beers as inspiration, such as pale ales, IPA, stout and porter, red ale etc, but they put their own spin on it by adding a lot more alcohol and very different (and more aggressive) hops. The taste of an American IPA bears little resemblance with an original IPA, but they are each good in its own way and the appeal to different people. I like American beers a lot, but I can also see that drinking too many of them is addictive, in the sense that the taste is so powerful, that they will make almost any other beer taste bland. It's like eating spicy thai food and curries every day. When you then eat some English or Japanese food, it will taste very bland.
Rogue beers are fantastic, but they have some strange ones that are less good too, like the voodoo bacon beer.
Thanks for the great info!
I would love to sit and drink a few of these session beers (and I'm sure I soon will), but at that price it will be a seldom event.

I love the language the US likes to use in reference to other countries-' deeply concerned', 'deeply disappointed'.
Patronising nonsense, stop worrying US and learn to enjoy life.
If the US stops worrying can we keep the billions of dollars we give Thailand every year?

Assembled enthusiasts! I have an cunning plan to get some of these stunning beers for less money (it might not work but let's give it a go anyway).
I contacted WishBeer through their "Make a Wish" page to request Twickenham Fine Ales - Naked Ladies and got the response
"Thanks for the wish! This beer is not imported in Thailand yet but we'll let you know when it is!"
which got me thinking about whether they were importing or not. I went to check my, proudly, displayed empties from my Christmas Carnage and realised that it it the same importer for both WishBeer and Villa Market. Being that Villa sells at B236 and WishBeer sells at 170-190 for most British Brews (bar Wychwood) I suddenly thought to simply "wish" for all the beers at Villa from WishBeer. Even if they price the same we can still get the wonderful free deliver over B2,000 and 10% off over B4,000 which would (pun intended) make them cheaper still. It is understandable that WishBeer's costs are lower as they don't have to display their bottles in premium real estate. This does depend on whether Villa have bought all the stock and have pushed for this themselves or not but I still think that WishBeer might have seen these beers but maybe didn't know enough about British Beer at the time so bought "safe" (i.e. Fullers, Youngs, Morland, Greene King, Wychwood).
Crazy thinking, but it would only take a minute for each of us to do (well, I've already done it!).
Whatever the result I'm still chuffed to bits to have access to all this premium beer in Thailand. Keep it coming!
That could work. They have a huge selection of famous and not so famous beers, but most are quality beers. I would say that most of the "new" Villa Market ales are of good reputation and quality, and they would fit nicely into Wishbeer's product range. However, the beers that really need a price reduction are the Shepherd's Neame beers. They are terribly overpriced at 299-320bht, which is almost twice as much as a Fuller's ESB or London Porter at the same supermarket.
Another interesting beer that I have only seen at bars in Phuket, is Brain's from Wales. Those are excellent, but I have never seen them in any supermarket. They normally come in cans. So far I have only seen the stout, Brain's Black and SA Smooth a 4% abv version of the Brain's SA, containing a floating widget for that "draught feel" (yes, I know the CAMRA guys don't like it, but it tastes great!).
A question to the ones familiar with BKK and Pattaya. Is Marston's Pedigree on sale there in supermarkets? I have heard it is, but never seen it. Marston's beers are great as well, especially their flagship Pedigree, Burton Bitter and Oyster Stout.
I have noticed that many of these great looking English ales have an ABV of around 4%. Is that normal for British ale?
I guess I am used to US microbeers where ales usually vary in ABV from 5.5-8%.
For the money they charge here, just seems a bit low to me. At least with Rogue etc. you don't have to drink as much.
Is There Really Racism In Thailand Or Is It Just Prejudice ?
