There are flights from Johannesburg to Sydney, which is not much different. Just a bit closer and much bigger cities. So hopefully that helps you get over your confusion.

It's more than 11,000 Kilometers between the two. They aren't exactly close by. There must be dozens or hundreds of other cities closer to Auckland without direct flights. For example, Chiang Mai is closer, but no direct flight to Auckland.

Just because they lack the power to cut something doesn't mean they won't do it. They lack the power to cut the spending of the department of education, but they are doing that anyway. With the Justice department fully controlled by the Trump admin, there is nobody who will enforce laws anymore.

I guess you don't care that it is illegal for Trump to end the department of education without congress? I bet you will care when he illegally ends something that affects you.

He didn't try to end the department of education in his first term either. He can't legally do that on his own either, but that doesn't stop him from trying.

You seem to be forgetting that we currently have a billionaire running DOGE who has never been elected and probably never will run for election. And Trump can't run for election again either. Neither of them care at all about the republican party or about the results of any election after they are gone.

That is what this thread is about. Read the OP. Many of us have pre-existing conditions that prevent us from getting health insurance in Thailand. Count yourself as a lucky one if you can get insurance in Thailand.

Everyone already knows what self-insurance and insurance mean. It's pointless to explain the technicalities of common words.

My strategy also. No need to keep a lot of cash in Thailand this way.

As I said, I self insure. Call it a reserve or whatever word you want. In any case, I have funds set aside far in excess of the typical insurance policy coverage limit in Thailand. That's what many people who can't get insurance do.

Yes, of course. As I said, many of us self insure--keep a very substantial reserve of cash available to pay for any emergency treatment needed. But keep medicare as an option.

Many of us living in Thailand self insure and keep medicare as a backup. It gives us the option of returning to the US for treatment if needed.

And even that was a lie.
