  1. This is a very misleading claim by the Thai AIDS group. What is a minor change to a formula? Anyone with even a little knowledge of chemistry knows that seemingly minor changes in a formula or compound can be the result and the cause of huge differences. Exchange one atom, which seem like a minor change, but the pharmaceutical properties and the process for producing the compound is totally different.

Or even consider the spatial configuration of a molecule, a minor change can make the compound pharmacologically active or inactive (or even toxic).

Such "minor changes" are often not obvious at all and do indeed constitute a major progress in the research for treating an illness.

On the other hand, if the minor change is obvious (to those skilled in the art), then the existing patent law prevents the patenting of the "new" substance. All it needs is to apply the existing laws.

So instead of accusing the big pharmaceutical companies, perhaps these AIDS infected people get information first and open their mouth after. And it might be useful to remember that without patent protection there would be no medicine at all the treat AIDS in the first place.

The above is correct, plus in the case of 'minor changes', it is only the minor changes that can be patented, presuming that they are novel & unobvious. The original medicine will become public domain - can be genericed. Presuming patent system is functioning properly, which might be a big presumption-

  2. With the changes, our train network won't be connected with our neighbours," he said.

Thus we move back to the 18th century, stifle our international cross border trade with our immediate neighbours. Indeed an inward looking malfunctioning administration.

Note that the South as usual again neglected, the industrial area of Rayong neglected.

Chang Mai, full steam ahead, one is led to speculate as to why Chang Mai which is hardly the centre of Thai industrial enterprises is the be all and end all for this scheme?

Not a private family rail connection in the offing surely ?

These proposals indeed make the Luddites seem positively radical

Neo-Luddism conjures pre-technological life as the best post-technological prospect (see also primitivism), or as Robin and Webster put it, "a return to nature and what are imagined as more natural communities".[3] Industrial Society and Its Future (1995) is a recent expression of Neo-Luddism by Theodore Kaczynski, also known as the Unabomber.

Even better! Lets make a new rail gauge! And we will change it every day according to the value of the baht. And last but not least, lets put the rails overhead! No way those dam_n Cambodians will be able to connect to it then.

Or the Malays, Burmese, Lao or Chinese.

Now can I have my Minister for Transport badge?

  3. Has anybody guesstimated the amount of money coming in on these one way scams?

Going by the stories here from just a few posters, and more to come out soon, I would say of the order of a billion ß a month -

Do you know what a billion is??? If you do, then you are off your head. If you don't, you shouldn't use the word!!!!!

Well a yank bill, not a pommy one. That's only a million US a day - not impossible considering the constant stories like this.

So you are saying that there are 1,000 days in a month then!!!!!!

    billion ß

    apology required

  5. Unfortunate for the women involved, but it's nice to see the boot on the other foot for once.

Agreed. When they are many lovestruck expats losing their life savings every day in Thailand thinking they are supporting the love of their life and being left with nothing, it's kinda hard to feel sorry for this one anonymous woman (is she does exist) who lost nothing and the other women in the rumoured other cases.

Any Expat over the age of 45 that has or is in the process of losing their life savings because they are LOVESTRUCK .... deserves it! IMHO

Nobody 'deserves it' - but it is stupid.

  6. Guava "As I started reading the article there was the usual <deleted> response, but I would have read it, muttered something about religion and nutters, and moved on. But when I read that bit, my jaw hit the floor. The pure hypocrisy and raw idiocy of these people still astounds* me. The fact they (and far too many like them) have influence over anything more important than a sandwich is one of the biggest issues facing this country, and the world today."

No less sane than Bristol Palin picking up a quarter of a mill to be 'abstinence ambassador' for the Candies Foundation.

  7. Had an electrical college student staying with us. We were doing some house wiring at the time, so asked her if she could ask her teacher what was the correct way to connect active & neutral. She just plain refused to do so. I got the feeling she would have preferred to commit hara kiri than ask a question in class.

Found out about an exhibition of tertiary research - students & unis from all over Thailand. Thought I would have a look. I did find some interesting projects, but it was very difficult to find anybody who could explain them in English.

Mark, you are just as guilty of perpetuating Thailands cultural cringe. Your telling foreign election observers that they are not welcome weakens the results so they are easily questioned by any rabble. An offer to observe Thai elections also implies an invitation to help observe other countries elections, bringing Thailand into the international community. Up to you.

  8. I remember a comment last year by Suthep, before he allowed the army to go on their murderous rampage through bangkok, it was an issue being discussed between the govt and the reds, and the comment was along the lines of 'the matter is resolved and nobody has lost face'. This is the deputy pm and his aim during a negotiation was not about what was right or wrong for the people, it was simply about not losing face, it seems the first thought in anything here is how to not lose face.

Did he preface it with 'We Thainese ............'
