There/are are warnings for many cities. Rio was supposed to be dangerous when I visited. We strolled into favelas, cycled around the city, walked through local parks, with no issues. Even walked home from an airport. No guides. No tour groups and no staying where everyone else chooses to stay. Travelled around on local buses. Life is what you make it. If you can connect with nature, you don't worry so much. If fearful, we would not have those experiences and memories. Of course you hear the stories.
