  1. Well 7 days and 4 hours after my 1st of 8 calls the engineers just left my condo and my internet works again. The silver lining to this cloud is that my new line connects at :

Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps): 636

Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 7230

which is one meg better than before. I'm on the 6Mbps Indy package.

When I first had the MAXNet service installed I had the chang in the condo install cat5 cable from the box on the wall outside because I wanted the better quality (twisted pair) cabling. This just proved really useful because they could run my new internet (3BB) line on one pair and leave my old TT&T phone line connected on a separate pair. They had suggested joining the two signals together outside because they didn't realise I had spare pairs which would according to them have degraded the signal.

So after a long wait and a a promise not to charge me for the period of no connectivity I guess I'm happy to be on the new cabling direct to 3BB with it's faster speeds. :jap:

  2. I just came back to Chiang Mai last Sunday after 2 months away and found my internet not working. A call to the helpline produced a quick response call from an engineer who got me to reboot my router which did nothing but at least I thought I was getting somewhere. 6 days and many phone calls and visits to 3BB shops I still have no internet and have received the 'some of the old nodes, up to 60, which belong to TT&T need to be replaced'. Still I know that if I was a new customer I would be getting a new line in probably in less than 48 hrs so I guess old customers are just at the back of the queue.

Does anyone know where is the main (head) office of 3BB in Chiang Mai> I was given a number of the 'main engineer' in Chiang Mai but he never answers the phone. :-(

  3. I've been very happy with my AC Ryan PlayOnHD for the last 9 months. I had one of the original non live WD TV boxes but the HDMI handshaking with my Onyko receiver meant powering the receiver on and off sometimes to get a picture so I gave it away and got the PlayOnHD and fitted a 1TB hard disk.

  4. If you want to use your ADSL wireless modem router with your cable modem it is a bit more complicated than a standalone cable wireless router and you will need to change some of the settings in the setup of the wireless router but this is how to do it. You will need to know what IP address range your cable modem uses. I don't know what OS you are using so I will keep it general.

First connect your cable modem (CM) to your PC.

Open the settings page for your CM.

In the LAN IP setup page (could have a different name depending on brand) find the IP address range your CM is using for DHCP, e.g. 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254

Change this range to 192.168.n.2 - 192.168.n.100 : where n is the same number from the original settings. Here you are just reserving the IP address you will give your wireless modem which will be above 100. Sometimes these numbers start from 10.n.m.2 .

Connect you ADSL wireless router (AWR) to your PC

Open the settings page of your AWR

In the LAN IP Setup page (Netgear ADSL modems) turn off DHCP and change the IP address of AWR to 192.168.n.254, again where n is the same number from your CM.

Connect your CM to your AWR with a LAN cable. Away you go. If you need to make changes to your AWR e.g. changing the your wireless network name or wireless password you will now open page 192.168.n.254 but to open your CM you will open 192.168.n.1 as usual.

It does sound complicated although I tried to make it step by step. I have done this with a Netgear DG834 as well as other brands. Hopefully I didn't make any mistakes.

  5. In article 285089 MS recommends values as high as 50 (DEC) and in article 177078 from MS it is written :

In Windows NT 4.0, the default value of IRPStackSize is 0x4, and the range is from 0x4 to 0xC (4-12). Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 5 or later ignores values less than 0x7.

In Windows 2000, the default value of IRPStackSize is 15, and the range is from 11 to 50. In Windows XP, the default value for IRPStackSize is 15, and the range is from 11 to 50.

  6. I am also in line for a new high end gaming laptop though 15-16". My machine of choice so far is the MSI GX660 which recently became available over here at JIB and Good Speed (in Chiang Mai).

    MSI GX660 at JIB

I also don't like Thai keyboards for the same reason as the OP, on my last laptop I bought here (an Acer) I had the keyboard changed to US on a trip to Singapore.

The problem for me is that in the UK this laptop is available for a slightly higher price but comes with a full HD 1920x1080 screen, 2x500GB hard drives, 6GB RAM and Windows 7.

    MSI GX660 at Overclockers

The RAM and extra hard disk can obviously be upgraded but the screen is pretty much fixed. I will be going back to the UK in March for a few weeks and so plan to buy one then although it does seem like a long wait right now.

  7. I went back to the TPLink shop and checked the price, it was 3100Bt per unit. I explained that although I knew that Thailand and the UK were not the same that it seemed very expensive by comparison. The lady in the shop's answer was that in Thailand you get lifetime warranty.

I'd never heard of the controversy surround powerline before so I'm back to looking for a decent dual radio modem router.

  8. My friend's WD 80GB IDE hard disk died recently and so I took it back to the shop in Panthip Chiang Mai where they were happy to take it back under warranty. This happened whilst upgrading him to an old 320GB SATA of mine. A couple of weeks later I receive a call from the shop saying they can supply a new hard disk but because the 80GB is not currently available they can offer a 160GB but for 500Bt. I assume that the warranty means replacing with like or better so I should get the 160 for free right? Also I'm pretty sure the price he paid for the 80GB disk 2 or 3 years ago is as much as the 160GB costs now. The warranty is with Platinum who no longer have an office Chiang Mai otherwise I would have taken it straight to them. I guess I should just demand (politely) the new disk for free.

  9. I have a Smile account which was my only account until I opened a NW account for the purposes of accessing my money abroad. Now it seems that their Swift charge: 0.25% (min 13 GBP maximum 35 GBP) so therefore 13 GBP up to 5200 GBP seems like a decent deal at least until the next time I go home next and open a Metrobank account.

  10. I'd been thinking about homeplugs and so went to the TPLink service centre in Ikon, Chiang Mai. They have the TL-PA201 in stock but I think the lady there said 2700 THB for one. I will go back and check but you can buy a pair on Amazon UK for 41 GBP so that would make them ridiculously expensive.

I'd like to get a 802.11n simultaneous dual radio ADSL modem router but the only one available here (Chiang Mai) is the Belkin Play Max ADSL and according to this review it has a fatal flaw. Maybe a firmware update has fixed it but I'd like to be sure first.

  11. Hi

I had my old classic Pioneer A400 GTE (Tom Evans mod) shipped from the UK this year. One of the channels on the CD input to which my Logitech Squeezebox Duet is connected cuts out intermittently, a simple wiggle of the input cable restores the sound. The amp is from 1993 and all the phono (RCA) input sockets on the back are dull and tarnished. I was as thinking of getting the CD input and the line input, which is used for the front speakers of my Onkyo surround sound receiver, replaced with nice gold plated ones. Somebody in this forum already mentioned Kaew Audio, the shop upstairs at the back of Central (Kad Suan Kaew)> Has anybody else had experience there or could suggest another place that would take care of this classic?

    cheers

  12. My point is that as a consumer I like to feel confident that when I use my credit card on-line, and that the companies I am doing business with are making maximum effort to keep my information safe. As long as you are using one of the common browsers there should be no problems and I would expect them to test with all the of the common ones.

As you can see from this screen shot on some pages they get it right, the padlock in the bottom has no warning exclamation mark and the website shows it is registered with Akamai.

I have sent them a email suggesting that they look into this.

Coincidentally the day after I booked the ticket (reluctantly) a friend of mine in Chiang Mai had his credit card blocked because of an unauthorized transaction of several thousand dollars made in the US. He has never been the the US and this specific card had only been used on-line on reputable UK business websites and had never left his condo. He doesn't know how it happened but for me it's more proof of how careful ones needs to be on-line.

  13. I just tried to book a ticket for a Thai friend who doesn't have a credit card and when I got to the page for entering my CC details I noticed that the padlock in the bottom of my browser (Firefox 3.6.10) has a red exclamation saying "Warning : Contains unauthenticated content". The web address starts https which is good but these days most websites that require financial information show the name of the website highlighted in blue or green and hovering the mouse over the name will show that the site is verified although I'm not sure if this is the same in other browsers.

Has anybody noticed this, I don't remember it the last time I booked with Air Asia.

  14. The main branch of Bake and Bite is on Kaew Narawat road. Coming from Nakorn Ping bridge, maybe Soi 3, on the right hand side, there is a sign. It's a big house in a garden which is very quiet with lots of space to sit inside or out. All production has moved there and they also seem to have a garden for growing their own vegetables. Mrs B&B told me that they are much happier in the new location and people seem to really enjoy the peace and quiet there. Of course it's a little out of the way as in not right in town as all the old branches used to be. Nimanhamin branch is due for refurbishment and as other posters have pointed out now open everyday and also for dinner, it's in the Soi beside the Tesco Lotus.

  15. I have a friend who is looking for what he believes is the 'real' masaman curry in CM. Sometime in the past he ate chicken masaman in a restaurant called something like Liberand next to the Amora hotel on the moat. He prefers the masaman when it has been cooked over an extended period of time to achieve the correct texture and flavour. I as a vegetarian have no idea what he is talking about because I just like mine filled with lots of fresh veggies to compensate for the lack of intrinsic flavour in the tofu.

Thanks in advance for all and any suggestions.
