  1. I just finished my first week of individual tuition the cost is 190 Bt / hr plus a one off registration fee of 200 Bt plus books. I had to undertake 40 hrs of study to get this rate and even then they were reluctant and said that the discount rate usually only applies to students who study a minimum of 3 months. I may well study for 3 months but I wouldn't commit to that at any language school until I was sure of the quality and that the teaching method suited my my needs.

I've been taking the Thai Kindergarten class which is basically learning to read and write the alphabet and the basic rules of tone pronunciation from the written word. I'm quite happy with my teacher although sometimes I wish she was a little more assertive. We've covered this module which is normally 20 hrs in groups classes in 10 hrs so I'm happy to be receiving the benefits of individual tuition. Next week we start module 4 reading and writing which I'm sure will be much more challenging.

My overall impressions is that the classes are well developed with good structure and adequate course materials. In both locations the facilities are good and the staff that I met very friendly.

  2. I'm a racing and sports fan so I rarely play fps but as I just upgraded my Galaxy 8600 GT to a Sapphire HD 4850 with DuOrb cooler I decided I'd like to see what it could do. I have to say that I had to leave AA turned off and I'm only running at 1360x768 on my LG 37" LCD TV and getting 45-55fps with graphics settings on gamer one below enthusiast. The game looks and plays great like this and this might actually get me excited about a shoot-em up since things changed from 2d to 3d. I still fire up MAME from time to time for some old skool arcade action, you can't beat R-Type.

I don't think the langauge pack will help the original version. On Zest there is a post claiming to be able to get the original game up and running in English.

  3. They have loads of groups classes as always depending on a minimum class size of 5. There is survival Thai, conversational Thai, reading and writing plus various situation based classes and Thai culture classes. The courses are between 30 and 60 hrs and the cost is always 80 Bt / hr. If you want to have private classes it is 250 Bt / hr coming down to 180 Bt / hr if you block book 40 hrs, basically 4 weeks of 10 hrs. The classes are taught Monday to Friday in two hours slots starting at 8am either full time or part time. I don't know why the fee structure isn't given on the website, I have the prospectus they gave me when I visited and if I had a scanner handy I just post the whole thing.

I'm going for a 2nd interview tomorrow, that's me interviewing them, with the intention of starting classes Monday.

  4. Hi guys

Thanks for the input. I rode around CM today taking in HomePro, Index, Global House and just about everywhere else off the superhighway and Hang Dong road.

After surfing around for a while I found Oceanline in BKK and so will give them a call tomorrow and find out by just how much I can't afford this kind of solution. :o

  5. I'm looking for a teacher to improve my Thai and have come to the conclusion that regular classes aren't suitable. I took some classes some years ago and my Thai has since developed in an organic way which doesn't match any of the levels of the classes available.

My friend spotted a big sign for this school on Hasadisewee road which I'd never heard of and so I went to check it out today. My question is has anybody had private lessons with a teacher there and could they relate their experience.

Please no discussion of other places or teachers.

    thanks

  6. I live in a west facing condo with a window that runs the width of the room. Great until 4pm when the sun starts heating it up like a greenhouse.

Anyone know if anything like this is available in CM?

I saw someone outside HomePro offering regular outside motorized blinds but they seemed quite expensive for what they were although I never really tried to cost the components properly myself.

  7. FYI

The long serving, very lovely manager from the original Bake&Bite 1 on Kotchasan has just opened a new cafe/restaurant a little further along the soi that runs alongside B&B past Inter Inn on the right. She is serving B&B products and anybody who has been a regular customer since the beginning, I'm sure would like to support her. She's very happy to have her own place now. I went there yesterday afternoon and had a very pleasant lunch in the garden. I was given this information by the owner of B&B who also seemed happy for her longest serving staff member. B&B 1 will be closing soon so if like me you still prefer the original shop better go visit soon.

  8. yes you can buy power leads and adaptors in thailand

Yes of course I know this. I realised this was a bit of a noob question but as I hadn't specifically looked in Panthip for one of these clover plugs before and I didn't fancy being in BKK for long without my Netbook I thought I check. 2 pins are more popular than 3 in Thailand and as I already have to carry my proprietary Dell 3 pin powerlead anything I can leave behind is most welcome.

  9. So I bought my Advent, great deal, great product. I'll be back in Thailand in 3 weeks and I just wanted to check I can buy a spare 3 core ac clover plug power lead because the UK one I have now, which of course I won't need, is almost as heavy as the dc adapter itself.

  10. Why does the forum change the case of words in the title? I made a post today whose titles starts MSI which is the name of the company but the forum changes it to Msi.

Another thing is why can't I search for 3 letter words? Maybe I wouldn't have needed to post if I could have searched for MSI.

  11. Your Dell XP license is only legal on the machine it came with as with all OEM licences, so if you really want it to be legal you have to buy a new copy. If you buy an OEM CD it is supposed to come with some hardware as it's not legal to sell them by themselves, OEM license are for systems builders.

There are rules on how much of your hardware you can change and the whether the license is still valid as it is tied to the machine it was first installed on which is not the case with the retail version.

So to summarise there's a difference between having a legitimate windows XP cd and installing and using it within the term of the license.

I have a Thai built PC without legal license and I'm trying to decide whether to try and buy a 2nd hand copy of a retail license when I'm back in the UK next week or go with the online Windows Genuine Advantage license process.

  12. You can just edit the files in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins. Best to keep a copy of the edited files so you can paste them back in if you do a clean-install of firefox etc. I changed all the references from .com to .co.uk and it works a treat.

Although just today I set Google toolbar to replace the FF search box and remove the rest of the toolbar so now I have a much cleaner interface and I can tab straight into the toolbar search box with one key press after creating a new window. :o

  13. I'm on MAXNet premier 1Mbps and my modem reports

Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps): 512

Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 1024

yet Speedtest.net just produced the following:

    252134484.png

So I ran a test at ThinkBroadband which produced a more realistic:

    Date 28/03/08 17:06:22

    Speed Down 526.17 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps )

    Speed Up 244.49 Kbps ( 0.2 Mbps )
