  1. how does one check to see if the pre-installed windows is genuine? I bought a new HP Omni at Pantip late last year, and no disc came with it.

It should have a Microsoft COA sticker on the base with the product key. I always take a photo of mine when I get a new laptop because eventually the print will wear off and you won't be able to see the key if you need to re-install.

  2. This guy used to have them for sale on Thaivisa classifieds as he lived in Bangkok, I don't know if that is still the case I actually bought mine here in my hand luggage a few years ago. Some friends of mine here in CM got a spare part from him for their machine. Maybe you can contact him and he would be able to help.

  3. I was showing a friend the i-mobile phones in Airport Plaza Chiang Mai yesterday and saw the IQ3. Same MT6577 chipset as the IQ2 and IQ6. Seems like an evolution of the IQ2, works on both 850 and 900 Mhz as well as 2100 Mhz for 3G. Has the Dragontail glass that the IQ6 has but the IQ2 doesn't. Looks slightly squarer than the IQ2, more like my LG Optimus 2X than a Samsung Galaxy. 12MP camera like the IQ6. 6200 Baht in Maewang, list price 6400 Baht. Looks and feels like a nice phone. I couldn't see anything on Thaivisa about it yet.

  4. So far I'm very happy with my N7 especially now that I have bought the Nexus Media Importer app so I that can watch videos directly from a USB flash drive without having to copy them onto the device, saving me time and space.

Thanks for the info, where did you buy the adapter from microUSB to USB host so you can connect USB devices? does it provide enough power for a USB-powered external hard drive to work?

I got mine from Ikon in Chiang Mai, there's a shop that sells Chinese tablets (Ainol etc), it cost me 50 Bt. I've since seen them in Panthip BKK. Of course make sure it's micro USB because the mini USB version is still more widely available.

I'm still looking at alternative devices for friends who would like something a bit cheaper and I think when more tabs based on the MediaTek MT6589 chipset come out they'll be some decent competition.

  6. Thanks for the replies. I found the Orico brand from InvadeIT, before that I'd never heard of it. 40 pounds for USB card seems like a lot so and as it's not a priority, I will wait to get one from eBay. This one for less than 14 pounds complete with front panel seems like a much better deal. No guarantee either will have more chances of working so I'd rather take the punt on the cheaper one. Shame they won't post to Thailand though so I'll get it in the summer when I'm back in the UK.

  7. Hi

I'm in Chiang Mai and could only find one no-name 4 port card for 490 Bt.

I'm really looking for something with 2 ports at the rear and a 20 pin connector for connecting to the front. This is to go in my Asus P5B-WiFi Delux based PC that I just resurrected with Windows 8 Pro.

Something like this would be perfect.

I'll be in Bangkok a couple of times over the next 10 days either side of a trip to Singapore where I'll also look.

Has anybody seen anything like this in FortuneIT or Panthip?

    cheers

  8. Well I've only had the tablet 4 days and I already received an OTA update to Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2. My LG Optimus 2X is running Cyangenmod 7.20 Gingerbread and I have to say I like Jelly Bean much better. Hopefully the stable release of Cyangenmod 10.1 Jelly Bean isn't too far away.

As I'm off to SIngapore at the end of the month I will also get my VAT back which will make it more or less the same price as back home in the UK.

I put a DTAC Happy Internet SIM in it which currently has a promotion giving 300 mins free every month for 4 months. It's not so much I know but most of the time I'm on WiFi so it's enough to be able to check my email, update my news apps etc and after the allowance is gone it's only 0.25 Satang / minute. So far I'm getting this on 3G speeds which of course makes those minutes go a lot further.

  9. The silly things is that these are dual SIM phones, meaning they were designed to work on more than one network simultaneously so it makes no sense not to include all frequencies bands. This is the one thing that is putting me off buying one. I am also on 3 when I am back in the UK but I am also in India a lot too so I'd just like a phone that was tri-band for 3G.

I just bought a Google Nexus 7 3G here and I'm happy that it is quad band for 2G and tri-band for 3G. I know iMobile is not an international brand but given it does take two SIMs and since the introduction of number portability it doesn't make any sense to make a phone restricted to particular provider's network.

  10. I just bought the 3G version at IT City, Kad Suan Kaew, Chiang Mai. When I went there Saturday, after lomatopo said they had them in Bangkok, to ask about one they were absolutely sure it wasn't available and I had to beg and plead for them to actually look on the system where they found the product listed but with no stock. I then managed to convince them to let me show them on their own website, on a PC they had that had internet connection, and demonstrated that it was possible to add one to a basket to buy online at least.

They told me they would check and to come back Tuesday because of Chinese new year and I so went there this evening and they actually had 5 in stock. :-)

Just charging it and then we will see...

  11. Here's the GPS for a health food store that sells yogurt makers. Can't recall the name. Or at least has sold yogurt makers in the past. 18.794482,98.995804

I've also seen them for sale at Bakersmart on occasion. GPS18.755293,99.00822

This is Baan Suan Pak if that's helpful to anyone.

  12. i buy it at the milk co op on highway 11 just next to serapi -from 121 to 11 then u turn -you're there

or same thing across from the zoo where you can also buy cheese

    as i said before 5 kg @ 115bt but i am not 100% sure it's raw -doesn't matter anyway

I bought 5 KGs for 125 Bt at the place opposite the zoo on Friday. It's more than I really need but it's deinfitely not homgenised which most milk seems to be these days..

I've been making Kefir and yoghurt this past weeked. Thanks for the tip!

  13. I know you're looking for Windows 7 but I just installed Win Pro upgrade on my old gaming desktop that was running XP and I was surprised how easy it was to get used to switching between the tile interface and the desktop. Once you start to populate your taskbar with the programs you use regularly and then switching back to tile mode and typing the first few letters of any other program you want to use it's actually not too bad.

I also found a good post on how to create a start menu using the tool bar feature.

I had been thinking of putting Windows 7 on this PC but as the discounted Win 8 Pro was only 25GBP I thought it was worth giving it a go.

  14. I've been monitoring the Nexus situation for a while now and the buy now button on the Powerbuy website just became enabled for the 3G version, they only sell online via the website.

I'm in Chiang Mai and my local computer shop, Good Speed, tells me that when it's available anywhere, meaning Bangkok, they will have it too. I'm not sure I always believe that but I will now go and check with them again.

  15. I have a Gigabyte GTX460 OC in my gaming PC which is over two years old which is still a great card and plays most of my games at 1920x1080 even if with the settings on high rather than max. I had been thinking of buying a GTX660 which would be it's natural replacement or an HD7850, the GTX660 replaced my previous HD4850.

Instead of doing that I've been thinking of tryig to find another GTX460 and run them in SLI mode, it's as much because I've never done it before and it would be fun to see, as it is a way of keeping costs down and making use of an old card. I have a Gigabyte Odin 800W PSU so I think I should be safe there although I only have an Asus P8Z68-V motherboard which I read won't run at x16 if I install two VGA cards.

I'm in Chiang Mai which has a very small 2nd market in the various computer centres so I'm wondering if I might have more luck in Bangkok. I've also just seen one on EBay UK for 60GBP which is unused and so seems like a great deal.

I'm also going to SIngapore at the end of this month but I can't remember much about 2nd hand PC shops there, since my last visit was some years ago
