  1. In this case, the present government seems to be working with big business and against the best practice for Thais and Thailand. (I hasten to add: I doubt other governments were any better and let's keep this thread clear of political bickering...)

Over the last couple of weeks I've been watching presentations on environmental problems in Thailand; several on Map Ta Phut, and what I've learned is a disgrace: Environment destruction, human illness and death on a massive scale, total disregard for laws and regulations - both Thai and international laws and regulations.

This area shows us the worst that big business / corruption offers society; i.e. it kills people and destroys the environment for the sake of quick cash.

I fully support the Thai courts with their efforts to 'clean up' (both enviromentally and politically) the area and force big industries to act within the confines of the law (they've clearly shown their inability to self-regulate...).

  2. Thanks Xangsamhua: a starting point. :)

I feel uncomfortable with point 2.1, but can't discuss it...

I like most of 2.2, but it's an ideal that needs fleshing out. I'm comfortable with the premise.

3.1, the second sentence could be a problem. If, and I said if, the group they are not prepared to work with are a large group, very possibly bigger than their own, then what do you do? This is a major hurdle. Clearly, you can't say I don't respect X percentage of the electorate and refuse to engage them, no matter how large / significant the group is.

I don't like the last line too much, it sounds very nationalistic and draconian. Any time I see words like 'our ethics', 'our morals' and 'our culture' (the 'our' is inherantly implied...) I feel worried because usually the people saying 'our...' are using nationalistic rhetoric for their own unethical, unmoralistic and uncultural designs...

Thanks again for posting something on topic and relevant.

  3. Why not?

Let him do, see deeds before words and let show some democratic enthusiasm BEFORE the end of the day!

Wonder why no one of his opponents mentioned the return of Gen.Chavalit to politics after the October 7th disaster and quickly joining the Puea Thai Party - no comment by Sondhi Opponents on this one?

May the Observer then believe that the killings under his Deputy-ship is condoned by the same crowd?

    - Deputy Prime Minister Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh tenders his resignation on Tuesday to take responsibility on police's use of forces and tear gas on anti-government protesters.

    The Nation reported.

Gen Chavalit is deputy prime minister in charge of security.

    Source:

Wrong thread... Stcik to this topic please - thank you.

  4. Nobody knows what 'New Politics' is! It's a catchphrase - it has never been clearly outlined.

How can 24% of people vote for something that doesn't exist??? That's ridiculous.

    You are being ridiculous yourself

This is the question people have been asked:

    3.8 The New Politics Proposal

Some people have proposed reducing the number of MPs who are

directly elected, and replacing them with MPs appointed by groups or

independent institutions. Do you agree with this proposal, or disagree?

    (Q16)

    23% agreed, 74% disagreed, and 3% checked "don't know/no opinion".

Now try to summarize red agenda in one sentence to see the contrast.

Plus, I know it's tough for you, but please attempt to be reasonable.

Is this it??? 'New Politics', according to your statement above, means elected MPs will be replaced by appointed groups. Is that it??? Is that 'New Politics'??? That is a joke, surely. :)

As for yourself and TAWP saying; blah blah blah but the red shirts blah blah blah... I'd just like to remind you that this thread is about Sondhi saying that he would like to head a new party - that's the topic. Simple.

All I'd like to know is; if this guy is planning to head up a new party then what are his policies? Why should people vote for him? If his only ticket is: 'vote for me, and I will take away elected MP's and appoint them instead.' then I suggest he won't get many votes. So, back to the start before you went off at a strange tangent (again): I'd be interested to know what this party offers the electorate. As for them banding around the slogan of 'New Politics', I'd like the meaning of 'New Politics' clearly outlined (details would be even better).

  5. Have a look at this link which is only a couple away from yours, as we speak. This kind of place can be had for 6 or 7k in many areas.

You can get an older bloc, in okay state for under 5k. There are many in Thai areas ( :) ) for 3-4k.

You just have to walk around areas you're interested in and see what's available. Areas close to the BTS and MRT are usually full and more expensive. But, if you can find a good bus route that links to your place of work, walk around some areas you like on route, then you should be able to find a one room with bathroom and balcony for 5k (depending on area). Maybe, you'll get a nice place with seperate bedroom and living area for 7k - not so easy to find, but possible.

If you post the area you'll be working in then members will be able to help you more...

  6. Nobody knows what 'New Politics' is! It's a catchphrase - it has never been clearly outlined.

How can 24% of people vote for something that doesn't exist??? That's ridiculous.

Politics here, in general, is devoid of policies, we know that. The PAD, who have always been a politically motivated movement rather than a pressure group, should clearly outline their policies, why people should vote for them and what their vision of 'New Politics' means -simple.

  7. So, with South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore near the top of some categories, and Taiwan and Vietnam as big movers (forward), this doesn't bode well for the Land of Hubs...

To be fair, I do have decent service at home in Bkk (3 m/:) and at work in Bkk (many m/:D. I'm rarely, if ever, let down by my service provider though True (at home) reduces at peak times due to their 'overloading'. Compared to my parents who live in Spain (max 800 k/:D we're doing well.

  8. I always enjoy finding a new imported beer.

Last week I was at O'Malleys (I think that's the correct name?) at the end of backpacker heaven street. I went for a pint of guinness, but noticed they had Coopers stout and had one - I enjoyed it. I also wuite enjoyed the other two styles they offered.

I actually went on a bit of a stout try-out: Guinness, Coopers, Erdinger dark and Beer lao dark. Frankly the Beer lao dark, though much cheaper, was a poor cousin in this trial. Draft Guiness topped my list.

I really enjoyed this bar (too much as it turned out... :) ) with the free music (wide selection) and decent variety of beers.

Anyway, just to let you Aussies know that if you're missing your home country then Coopers is available in three varieties.

  9. According to this article in The Nation, The Nation themselves as well as 12 other news content providers have also signed up for this deal. I guess The Nation, with their ties to ThaiVisa, will allow content to still be reproduced here, but should we also be wary about quoting from the others? The list of members is:

ASTV Manager, Thai Rath Online, Daily News Online, Matichon, Post Publishing, the Nation Multimedia Group, Siam Sport, INN Online, Thansettakij Online, Dara Daily Online, Nawnha Online, Siam Rath Online and Thai Post Online.

If so, why only mention the Bangkok Post and not the others? Or doesn't ThaiVisa consider the other members significant enough to warrant a mention?

Exactly the point I made a few posts ago. Your first question is kinda answered by your first line, isn't it?

  10. Here's an idea - when someone wants to use BP content, there's a special "insert" button where he can copy-paste the link, and when people view this post, the content of that link is loaded automatically from BP website, thus giving them a hit. There could be a "show/hide" toggle button to display this content, too.

BP, on its end, should provide this "text only" version, or even ability to create "quote only" links - no one wants to load a whole page with all the menus and graphics inside a forum post.

Plus, that might be a nice idea, but I suspect TV does not want to show any hint of BkkPost media, and certainly doesn't want any kind of joint revenue stream or partnership that conflicts with existing tie-ups; the Nation.

  11. Don't newspapers usually believe in freedom of speech? I guess just not their speech. :)

It seems to be that it is more Thiavisa deciding they do not want any links or quotes from Bangkok post. It is reasonable of the Bangkok post to restrict other websites from posting whole articles or large sections, but it seems thaivisa has decided to take it a step further and prohibit even a few words - in complete disregard of common copyright laws.

Why they want to do that is anyones guess.

    I agree with you.

As I suggested in my post above this is an easy excuse being used by ThaiVisa beacause of their tie-up with the Nation; I'd guess. The Nation deal was always bad news (literally?) for this community, though an understandable business move for the owners.

As long as we understand that the motivation for money (a business requirement after all) is more important than anything else then we have a pretty easy understanding of the way this deal has gone.

  12. Odd that one can find no mention of the "Society for Online News Providers" anywhere online, other than this thread.

There was an article in The Nation on the 25th of September mentioning the formation of the Online News Producers Club. Maybe the same "Society"?

    http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2009/09/25...ss_30113046.php

"A joint declaration forming the club was signed by 13 major online news-content providers: ASTV Manager, Thai Rath Online, Daily News Online, Matichon, Post Publishing, the Nation Multimedia Group, Siam Sport, INN Online, Thansettakij Online, Dara Daily Online, Nawnha Online, Siam Rath Online and Thai Post Online."

Looking at the quote above would suggest that we cannot quote from any of these sources, yet we've only been 'banned' by one of the above; who happen to be in competition with our new 'owner' / sponsor / partner /... :)

  13. I don't believe that the generals care what America thinks. &, I don't believe that the Americans have much sway here either.

We've seen over the last four decades how much S.E.Asians care about America.

The Americans have no choice but to support any regime here, just to stop the Chinese (and any other group the US hates at any given time - muslims for now) from building a stronger (and anti-American) base. The generals are fully aware of this and will merrily take all American aid / help / support whilst doing exactly as they please...

  14. I'm not out to get the Dems, Plus. Indeed I thought that Abhisit was likely the best politician around three or four years ago. Of course, that was before he started making deals with the army who are the least democratic of the lot and the worst possible answer to Thailand's problems.

I just find it ironic that they kicked out MrT in the name of democracy (ha ha what a bad joke that the army coups are in the name of democracy...), only to promote a man who is equally as corrupt, but a bigger power broker who has zero regard for the electorate. MrT did some good for the nation ( the middle class grew and the poor saw real benefits for themselves), so does Abhisit (he, at least speaks, in a democratic fashion), but the likes of Samak and Newin bring nothing other than old school stealing and corruption.

Also Plus, the man with 32 MP's did not bring down the 'mighty' PPP. An illegal coup (is there any other way), marshal law, Dems making under the table deals with the army, army supplied judges, a violent political pressure group supported by the army and then finally an illegal deal made by the illegal coupmakers (and Dems) with a banned power broker!!! that's what finally, and totally illegally, immorally and undemoractically brought Abhisit to power.

Now, if Abhisit had a free reign to shine his 'bright torch of democracy' for the benefit of the Thai people then perhaps all the evil dealings might (not in my book, but might...) have been worthwhile. The problem is that evil begets evil and there's no 'bright torch of democracy' in Abhisit's hand. Indeed, if he slipped one out of his briefcase then his army mates would hoof him out in double quick time, replacing him with; your friend and mine; savoiur of the Thai people: Khun Newin.

& what a rollercoaster of a ride we've had to go from Khun Thaksin to Khun Newin. Yeah, thanks for that; army PAD and Dems...

  15. Lots of wild speculation above, so it was nice to see some facts written by the previous poster - slimdog.

I've spoken at length to Thai work colleagues who (red, yellow and neither) all have zero regard for Newin. Indeed, he seems to of been a joke character in MrT's time, riding together on bikes, etc... They all find it depressing that he has managed to wheedle his way to the top with support from the army and Dems; yet more disgrace on their part...

Time for me to speculate: :) Newin's a pure power politician, with a massive ego; wouldn't want to be PM??? Are you sure??? He would quite possibly be, and this is tough to say, worse than Samak. Basically the army got what the wanted; all their power back with zero regard for what politician rules the place, or how corrupt he is, as long as the army are above (and in control of) the law...

If, in the near future, Newin is PM then this would have been years of lies by the army and their ilk for the worst possible outcome for the nation. Nothing new there then... Finally the PAD and reds might join together to get rid of the army, who have always been the biggest evil, but at what cost?

These types of politicians and powerbrokers are pure scumbags.

  16. So bored talking about US healthcare system... LoL But in Thailand I go to Bumrungrad, no insurance, just pay when I go. My primary doctor there is as good or any doctor than I've had in the US, she even did most of her education in the US and studied at John Hopkins... she's great. :) (and cheap as hel_l compared to what she'd get in the US !)

    Agreed.

  17. So, there was this case.

Then Samak's government wanted to introduce a lottery, but were called down, by the Dems amongst others.

Then, I seem to remember, but could be wrong, that the Dems passed a bill on a new lottery quite recently (also different from the 6 digit; which was why MrT's government were called to order here...)???

So, is this supreme court and the present government going to demand full visibility on all government lotteries: how many tickets bought, prizes handed out, complete breakdown of costs, profits - where the profits go... That's what I'd really like to see.

  18. Just this Sunday past, I bought a side-by-side 2 door fridge... a 210L capacity GE model (sorry can't remember the model) from HomePro in the Carrefour complex in Pattaya... cost was 49,000 THB. The promotion included a free electric fan and 2 easy chairs.

Should be delivered this afternoon. :D

Mental note: buy a couple of cases of Chang on the way home... :)

That's a job well done, and I'm very jealous...

I wanted a huge fridge, but the missus wouldn't let me. :D I ended up buying a 16,000 baht, short(ish) and stubby(ish) Mitsubishi unit. It's around 15CF, and I'm very very happy with it - although it's a tad on the small side for my liking.

I also buy from Carrefour; finding their service on white goods far better than Tesco or Makro. Makro is NOT the place to buy white goods IMHO, though I do fill my freezer full of Makro smoked salmon, beef steaks and frozen veg...

Can I just add that folk shouldn't be put off of all Whirlpool products. I've had Whirlpool washing / drying machines for the last 7 years working daily loads, and they've been superb. Whirlpool washing machines, National / Panasonic showers; best value products in Thailand.

  19. I am arriving in Bangkok on Sunday, staying at Sukhamvit Soi 1, any flooding there????????

In that area, heavy rain is more likely to bring big puddles that'll clear up pretty quicky.

(these is when folk attack me as being wrong; that it floods non-stop... :) )
