  1. Wembley 1978 cup final, we slaughtered them.

The semi-final at Highbury, against West Brom, had a great atmosphere too (not the usual 'library' hush...).

Went to every round that year except away to Milwall (my dad wouldn't take an 8 year old...), just as well cause at half time, with the score at 0 - 6, the local fans decided to riot.

  2. Heng: No, I have not been to one of those games; once went to Staples stadium for a game (yes, it was a box at the top; in the good old days when I had enough money to follow the capitalist mantra :) ).

It appears ironic to some, but perhaps not to a Chinese / Thai landlord come sweatshop owner come tuktuk mafiosi, that the song for Thai nationalism and protectionalism is sung loudest by folks whose grandparents didn't speak Thai...

  3. OP and Harry, what country are you in? The basic problem here is that you're comparing apples with oranges...

Austalian rules and regulations have their unique qualifiers.

US rules and regulations have their unique qualifiers.

UK rules and regualtions have their unique qualifiers.

We are in Thailand. The Thais at Carrefour acted correctly under their rules and regulations, as every store in every complex in every town in every province of Thailand would. In this cae they were very kind and broke the rules for a forigner, out of their kindness.

  4. The OP is confused.

'Getting away with it' is when somebody is trying to cheat you, which isn't the case here.

Carrefour have a promotion with a set of rules and regulations; the same for you and their Thai customers. The rules and regulations are, designed, shock and horror, wait for it... to make them money. Thus, they are tightly controlled to induce you in without the risk for them of losing money.

You wanted the rules and regulations to be broken to suit yourself. The Thai staff were very good. If you did the same in the US or UK or Australia, etc, the staff would have abided by the rules and regulations - you would have received 5 tokens only. In this case they were exceptionally kind to you and bent the rules as a result.

You writing is difficult to understand, through the childish insults, due to the lack of punctuation.

  5. Yep, guys like you give the rest of us a bad name...

Clearly they have their rules; one coupon per 600 baht spent with a maximum of 5 coupons per bill: simple.

They were very reasonable to break the rules because of your whinging... Where is Maigo6 when I need him? This is a clear case of excellent Thai service in the face of abuse by a foreigner who felt he was special and wanted to break the rules.

    Carrefour sevice management = 1.

    Foreigners = 0.

    (I've added a website FYI: http://esl.about.com/od/englishgrammar/a/a_punctuation.htm)

  6. If you played up back in the early 90's in Astoria Charing Cross Road London you would get one of those long heavy metal torches smashed across your head by the doormen, they all had them as a torch is hardly an offensive weapon. Other then the Brixton bully boys the club was the <deleted>.

Me and a mate were stuck in a small room with 5 very large mean bouncers and a closed door, at Astoria once. They weren't very nice, but in the end they just kicked us out; threat of extreme violence, but no violence, just threw us out...

  7. Any links to the backgrounds of these people?
You can be sure they will be of Chinese origin.

I seen on Bloomberg that Chinese people are about 8% of the population but they control 80% of the wealth. I don't disagree with Thailands protectionist policies but why don't they apply them to the Chinese ?? Why sell out to the Chinese ?

Easy, because they become Thai first.

    :)

And then press for protectionist policies...

  8. The thing is that these lists can only be drawn up by the information that is available or allowed to be shown. Clearly there are people that are not on this list be it through the fact that it can't be shown, or it hasn't been declared. In the end it's only a list, and as there are a number of TV posters not on the list then - I don't think it's very accurate. :)

    Agreed.

  9. Any links to the backgrounds of these people?

If you type in Forbes Thailand richest to google, they have a brief overview of where each gains their wealth. Other than that it's googling the name...

A lot of these folks don't really want information being known about themselves.

  10. All the points I've mentioned are true Insight.

Tell me how ASTV get started then. I have an idea, but I didn't build any interest in them til they started taking to the streets.

Another point, DSTV was banned, permanently.

ASTV was on air doing exactly the same as DSTV through 3 PM's. They're both propaganda channels that preached violence to get rid of the PM in power. One was allowed by the army because it helped them steal money and power, one wasn't...

    It's all vanilla...

  11. I bought an Epsom printer a few months back for around 1800 baht - it now collects dust...

Well, I use it once or twice a month for the scanner, which is good.

It's noisy and slow to start up, but the problem is the ink - very expensive and lasts no time at all. The four refils must be originals which are hugely expensive and either last less than 50 sheets or within 2 weeks the ink just dries up. :) Printing out 200 sheets over the first 2 months of use cost me more than the price of the printer! Absolute nightmare. I had a cannon before which was much much better.

  12. Sorry if this has been posted before.

It's a forbes list from a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure what I'm allowed to paste, so just the headline and the list below which I believe and hope, falls within correct rules and procedure. I personally doubt the accuracy of the list, but it makes for some interesting reading, so here goes:

  13. Reminds me of Mr. Berlusconi, who most probably still has a share in hundreds of Italian TV stations....

It is also unethical that a sentanced guy like Thoxin can publicly talk to his followers in the centre of Bangkok.

Well, what should think about it? TiT...after all I do not care, just want to have a quiet and safe life, like 99 % of all Thais I know.

MrB would give the local guys a run for their money...

I wonder who owns the ItalThai group... (okay I checked: Premchai...)

  14. Insight, you're joking right?

This group has systematically broken down the red shirt voice from MrT down:

It started with a coup, taking all pro MrT voices out of the government, judicary and senior beauocracy positions. Clamping down on websites and other means of free speech, putting / threatening to put activists and academics in prison (like the high profile Chula professor; obviously a bad man for writing 'a coup for the rich'...), marshall law in provinces considered red, ISOC intimidating the press, DTV being closed... basically creating nationalistic ferver and symbolism to clamp down on any voices that down fall in-line... If you can't see this, it's because you don't want to see it.

    It must be vanilla.

One of the first things Abhisit did as PM was to grant ISOC bundles of cash to 're-educate the northern areas (pro MrT areas) on what democracy means' to use their words...

    It must be vanilla.

  15. Thai men are crazy. My example would be Heng (well, okay Chinese / American Thais...).

Foreign men are crazy too; the longer they have been here the crazier they become: Maigo6, how long have you been here?

It's not their fault, it's something in the water. Oh, yeah, it is also to do with the extremely %$#@ ed-up society, lack of education, extreme rates of alcoholism, the proliferation of incredibly low IQ's (check the studies before you throw stones...), class oppression leading to a permanent state of simmering violence, perceived financial divide with foreigners and some other stuff it's dangerous to discuss (like my missus' PMS :) ).

It's a slow day at the office...

  16. With all due respect Robbie: don't put yourself through the grief.

These condos are run by little Thai familly groups for their own benefit. It happens all over. They quite like a foreigner on the board to do the dog'sbody work, and they believe it makes them look good too, but what do you get? Stress, stress and more stress. If it is something you enjoy doing then fine, but don't expect to have a say or be able to change anything. These family groups have nothing to do in their lives but abuse their little pond... They love the power, and scheme all day every day about more ways to use the power for personal benefit. Get out of that loop and avoid the @#&%&@!

  17. These Insomnia creeps are cowards. They have some bad karma coming.

I would love to see them mess with some Korean Soldiers. Those ROK boys would burn the place to the ground!

Yes, sooner or later these cowards will pick on the wrong person, and be killed.

It is very clear where they work and you can go back for them anytime, so they are really setting themselves up...

  18. And the Red Tv channel, or is that not included in political channels according to you?

That's a trickier one because if ASTV stays up then banning the redTV channel looks more and more polarized.

Obviously, redTV was a political channel controlled by politicians and gathering the masses for a proposed revolution, so I can understand why the government wouldn't want that up and running... (but I sympathize with the red shirt position; not nice to be kicked out by a coup when your an elected government...)

But, BUT, I don't accept banning redTV, keeping ASTV up and the army controlling the rest... It's all farked up. My ideals would have no redTV, but my ideals would have consistency and fairness built in too; independantly owned and run TV channels across the board. Or, you follow the american model and allow polarized extremist political propaganda channels from all political quarters, and call them news stations.

It's all vanilla. If I went to Svensens, who offered, 100 choices of ice-cream, and asked what flavours were available:

'Well, Sir, there's vanilla as today's special. I'd recommend the vanilla.'

    'What else do you have?'

    'We have vanilla, also.'

'I don't fancy vanilla today, what else, you said you have 100 varies of ice-cream...'

'We have 98 other varieties, Sir: vanilla, vanilla, vanilla, vanilla......'

That may look like 'choice' to some, but it doesn't to me. This is how Thailand will be if the red shirts are crushed. IMO this was the joint goal of the army, Prem, Dems and PAD.

  19. A 'snapshot moment' might encourage folks with phones to join (not perfect, but a start on the road...)

'Are you insane???' Might be good for the locals :) ; could be funny too.

'Never a dull moment' Similar to the above.

'Is he? Is she?' Too risque, okay, forget it...

    'Change'

    'Nothing Changes!'

    'Arhhhhhhhh!!!'

    Yeah, I'll get my coat...
