  1. there's a place (name escapes me) at the very end of Jomtien beach road that is very good / lots of turnover/ fair prices and busy with mostly Thais and farangs who know about it.

I am sure some of the people in the Pattaya forum know the name but you cannot miss it if you follow the road to the very end.

Been there a number of times--nice setting next to the ocean--clean toilets across the road-

Some baht buses from pattaya go the end-- if you get on one that doesn't-- cost 50 baht more to take you the rest of the way [last year]--best to ask when getting on --across the road at the Junction of Pattaya Thai & Second road

Can take a bit of time to get one back- I just keep strolling along and one eventually comes--if you are going back down second road --stay on back at the Junction-- as it might go down there anyway---- I always enjoy my visits there licklips.gif

  2. You cannot travel to Australia, Britain, America, Canada or any other such nation, and walk in and start working in any capacity without applying for a work visa.

Whether they are taking a potential job away from a Thai resident is irrelevant, a non tourist person who works without the proper paperwork is an illegal alien, you would be the same in just about any other country in the world so what is your problem?

    True ..

But certainly speaking from an Australian view there are plenty who do ! ..Just as in Thai , hospitality , cleaning , cash business ..

many other examples , its pretty similar .

Same here in N.Z.--with Chinese mainly

The immigration Minister at the time said " People coming here from China/Asia --will stimulate our economy - and increase employment "--what he did not say -- is that Chinese employ Chinese -in most cases--see it all the time with houses being built for Chinese owners -workers hanging off all over the building--many serving time to get a N.Z passport--then off to Australia is another option.

    .

a lot of employment besides construction labour goes into a new house.

    Yes --agree with that---

but not much consolation for a local carpenter looking for a job.

Also --as an example--a new Joiners Shop has opened up near us--making Kitchen /Bathroom cabinets and such like--Chinese owned--and guess what ??

  4. Just as a side issue---

I was about to apply for a single entry Tourist Visa from my local Consulate here in Auckland N.Z--I called them just to check all the required documents & payment remained the same-- to be sent by registered post etc.--as I have done many times over the last 10yrs--and they did---BUT!!!

They no longer accepted mail posting--I have to go and apply in person--and IF accepted- they will post my passport back ???

What's going on here ?---any of you Visa boffins have any info---I downloaded the application form from the Thai Embassy web-site-- nothing mentioned on that ??

Geeeze----not too much trouble if you live in the Auckland area---- will be a day trip for me---but a lot longer for folks further up north

Consulates in the UK have not been accepting visa applications by mail since, I think, January. Only the embassy in London now accepts such applications.

    'Welcome' to the club..

    Thanks. for that info baboon--

I wonder why they want this ?---is someone "assessing your suitability "- dress code -hair length--politeness etc.etc- from behind darkened windows--or just to make it as difficult as possible--angry.png --

I mean I am/we are Tourist for God's sake--not applying to Retire there-- or trying to get one over on them to stay longer than allowed to !!

  6. re---the first 15 metres of the new beach would involve a sandbag wall to serve as an embankment

when I was there last year----The sandbag embankment at Cha Am beach was falling apart in a number places- as the bonding element was stopped --the vendors on the top removed some bags next to their business --and used them to make steps down to the beach for their customers rolleyes.gif --

  7. The cashing fee now per cheque is 150 baht plus 3 baht govt stamp duty for a total of 153 baht; before it was 30+3 totaling 33 per cheque. Most/all banks implemented the higher fee in March 2014. Had a friend visit with travelers cheques last month...she cashed them at two different banks...both banks charged the 153 baht per cheque fee.

    Sent from my Samsung S4

Thanks Pib --- I suppose it was inevitable sad.png

  8. That 1966 hit song "I fought the law..." comes to mind. But with a word change...

I fought the banks....and the banks won.

I guess the humble traveler's cheque may make a little comeback in LOS (especially if you can get them free of charge and in large denominations such as $500). However, I encountered a bit of resistance for the first time when I recently tried to cash in my AMEX traveler's cheque at a Bangkok Bank branch, but the teller accepted after consulting her supervisor.

I agree, the 30 baht fee is largely offset by the better exchange rate on TC vs cash, especially with the 500$ TC.

Never had issues cashing one, and I always check all the banks for the best rate!

I thought I read somewhere on another thread That t/c's were going to be upped from 30b to 150b also ?? anyone cashed some recently ?? if it is still 30b--I want to get some for my trip in July

  9. The great western religions Judaism and Christianity also have a code of conduct, The Ten Commandments. The commandments are:

    1. I am the Lord thy God.

    2. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

    3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

    4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

    5. Honor thy father and thy mother.

    6. Thou shalt not kill.

    7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

    8. Thou shalt not steal.

    9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

    10. Thou shalt not covet.

    Appendix to Number 7

7/1 Thou shalt not Get Caught whistling.gif

Hey, Bucko, why limit this 11th Commandment by applying it to 7th only? It is universal, right across the board.

Pity Moses dropped the tablet when coming off the hill.

There are some that would apply to me-- and I suggest -- most people -- i.e numbers 5-6-8--and part of number 10 wink.png

    --

Re-number 10--what happened to the bit I was brought up with ?? --->>>>>

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.-------phew !! that would keep a man " busy " for a day or two !!

    O.K now you know --I admit to it --I'm a Catholic wai2.gif

  11. I know a Thai lady who converted to Christianity--- early one Sunday morning in her village--there was about 2 hrs of "chatter " coming from loudspeakers somewhere -when asked what was all that about--she said -- and I quote---

That's the Temple telling everyone -- who - and how many baht they give to Temple this time---now you know why I want Christian blink.png

anyone else heard these " announcements" ? wai2.gif

This poor understanding of what is going on through these loudspeakers is pure falang-understanding.... nothing else...... This is NOT a thai person

    saying these words- NO WAY....

    Glegolo

Not sure what you are saying Glegolo--either that there is a Falang Monk speaking Thai- sitting in a village Temple in Essan on the microphone--OR you are saying that the Thai Lady could not have said those words --

I respectfully reply-that you are wrong in both these cases -- but concede that there are some Falangs in Temples to study Buddhism wai2.gif

  12. That's the Temple telling everyone -- who - and how many baht they give to Temple this time---now you know why I want Christian

'Beware of practising your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.' --Matthew 6:1-4

I often wondered where that saying got it's origins---so now I know--thanks Morakot---

    Here endeth the lesson wai2.gif

Yes, and I got a very good explanation from an English speaking monk.....they publicize who gives what so that there is no question how much money was donated and where it was going to be spent, unlike "missing" funds in so many other religions that will go unnamed. No one person is left to handle the funds either. In some villages, the phuyai baan handles it with others signing receipts and treasury reports with him. No one can be accused of mishandling the funds.

And, yes, Buddhism and Christianity can co-exist in a person's life. It is between the practitioner and whichever deity he or she believes in come Judgement Day. It is not up to us to decide who is right or wrong. I find those that protest the most seem to be unsure of their own beliefs when they want to alter someone else's....just my two-cents worth.

That's two cents well spent luangtom --Thanks for detailing more info on my "early morning call " thumbsup.gif

  15. If it is any help Rawhod---they are commonly known as " Bommer Hinges "--I have fitted many in my time--if you find them make sure you get the right set--they have a couple of different profiles i.e for a flat as you have shown-- or for a raised surface like a 50x25mm that's part of the frame-- also various sizes in length--not the easiest to fit but work well--If you cant find them in Thailand at all--try the net

    Good luck

  16. <snipped>

I expect there will be many like me and voting with their feet--Thai Airways has the best deal now -for me

    from N.Z-----wai2.gif

If they vote with their feet, they better wear shoes. Some of our posters don't like flying with people wearing flip-flops.

O.K Scott--I will take off my Flip-Flops--and put on my Jandels giggle.gif

  17. Qantas has the answer---they have just reduced the economy points by about 40% sad.png --effective today for new bookings flying after July 1st-

that should cut down on any troublemakers--NOT !!!!

  18. Last trip back to Amsterdam a very drunk passenger kept going to his stash of Chang for a drink.(I saw him at least 7 times). I pointed it out to the Hostess. She didn't give a <deleted>. How he got past the security check I don't know.

Because security at BKK is before you pass immigration and that's where they take away any liquids pastes or ungents that are too big for regulations. Everything on the air-side is considered a secure area, including all the water, beer and whisky you care to tote onboard. I think the only airlines that have a secondary security search are United (but I think they don't come here anymore) and (probably) El Al. Oh, and I think Air France still has those shady looking ex-foreign legionnaire types giving you a secondary gate grope pat-down as well.

Amsterdam is one of those pain-in-the-arse airports where the security scan is at the gate and unless you have drunk it already, it gets taken away.

Next time bring your own six-pack (or two) and enjoy yourself too.

You can add the Qantas gate to Sydney to that NanLaw----every recent trip there has been a bag search and confiscation of liquids that are deemed to be too much--- a nice little " earner " for the boys/girls at the gate maybe ??

I know that in N.Z all confiscated liquids are destroyed--that's the word from a friend of mine who works Security at Auckland Airport--

I think it would be TOOOOO much for me --and break down--to watch a 12 year old Single Malt being poured down the drain xcrying.gif.pagespeed.ic.kh9vLpJQkU.png
