  1. I believe both answers are correct.

The problem is, what do you classify Bkk as?

If a province (jangwat) then 77, I believe Bkk isnt classified as a province, hence 76.

Bkk is I believe called an administrative area.

  2. only the russkys now that trick can tie plastic bag over head tie hands behind back and bullet in head

police report killed oneself case closed

Correct me if I am wrong, wasnt the alleged quote something along the lines of, most obvious case of suicide I have ever seen?. Case closed, and Hi 5s and slaps on the back all round for brilliant detective work, Sherlock Holmes himself would have been impressed.

  3. My wife is free to do whatever she like with the money she earns, none of my business.

She dont give me money, I dont give her money.

She has her bank acounts, I have mine, we have a joint account for household bills.

If your girl if telling you one of those Thai stories about men giving their money to the wife, it may be time to look elsewhere.

  4. If anything that happened in Bangkok last year sent you scurrying to the airport in fear, perhaps Thailand isn't for you.

There was nothing that happened last year year sent me scurrying in fear, having worked in some shythole locations throughout the world, personally I couldnt see the ploblem.

However my Thai mrs saw it somewhat differently.

The mrs will be glad to know you said her country aint for her.

By the way were you here in 2010, or maybe 1973?

Do you have a Thai mrs?

If yes then you will understand.

All the above is a moot point, its about having options.

  5. You can keep your head stuck in the sand, but I'm ready to grab my passport and run at a moments notice.

We have a winner, someone who didnt burn his bridges by going all in, someone who kept his options open.

Same same me and my Thai mrs.

What is it the Thais say, not my family not my ploblem.

Not my country not my ploblem.

Greece is getting more and more attractive these days.

Cant wait for Angela to kick them out of Euro La La Land, must be some deals coming up soon.

If it was a weekday it would take me about 5 hours to leave Thailand. The test is yet to come. One nice thing is all the data my phone will store. Makes it easy to go.

Thankfully for the mrs and I Swampy is just up the soi.

Had to take advantage of it last year when things got a bit crazy here in the capital.

May well have to take advantage again if the tales of water shortage in Bkk are to be believed.

The mrs hasnt yet decided on Orchard Rd or Nathan Rd, still nice to have options.

    Which one would you recommend?

  6. When you read these bashing posts, consider that they may be from a loser who has given up on trying to adapt to somewhere other then their "good old home town".

Loads of long time 'apologists' seem to be having problems these days.

    Weegee, BEVUP, the OP, etc.

I'm thinking the worsening political and economic climate is having serious knock on effects on all Thais and therefore foreigners lives here.

I realized Thailand was a serious shithole after about 6 months here, but all I care about is hookers and mountain biking.

We're calling someone who lives in a country they think is a shithole because they can't get laid anywhere else a 'winner' now?

I'd have chosen the opposite term myself.

I know nothing about the guy, but at least he has kept his options open, unlike others.

    Chalat chai plao.

I've been through 4 coups and 3 wars here. Today is fine except for those without significant experience in South East Asia. I withheld my judgement on Thailand for the first ten years as I realized I was not in the country long enough to really know what was going on.

Nice to see you, to see you nice.

You really should head down to Rayong, theres at least 5 former members on here used to tell the same stories, you would get on really well with them.

  9. in between make a country what it is

For me? it is Sarakham... and no I do not live in a paddy field, I live in a modern house. However I think you are missing my point entirely and only quoting part of my post.

Thailand has many beautiful places to stay and make a life depending on your taste, however if you like the sound of living in a paddy field you would have many choices, enjoy.

If Sarakham is the real Thailand ...... why don't they speak Thai.

When I was there they all spoke Lao.

Well expert opinion has it, that BKK / Pattaya and other touristy places are not the real Thailand, ergo the natives residents in such places cant be real Thai's then, now seeing as most speak Thai and we have established these people are not real Thai, then the Thai is not he native tongue, therefore the native tongue must be Lao and the real Capital of the real Thailand must be Sarakham.

So there we have it, Lao is the real Thailand....so we are back to the premise that living in the "real Thailand" is living in paddy field in Nakon Nowhere...thumbsup.gif

So there we have it, Lao is the real Thailand....so we are back to the premise that living in the "real Thailand" is living in paddy field in Nakon Nowhere..

The sad reality for many thats exactly what the real Thailand is.

Lets be honest here gents, how many woke up one morning, threw a dart at a map of Nakon Nowhere and said thats where I am going to live?

Most are led there by their tee lak, back to the village to built a farang macmansion and gain some face in the village.

The only ones I have ever met who seem contented are those who live and work overseas and come here for holidays or the FIFO guys.

Have met many who have told me, what once was something to look forward to, became something to be endured, and finally avoided.

Friend told me, do you think after 18 hours travelling I want to sit on a bus for 8 hours to get to Nakon Nowhere?

Same guy told me he could be poolside in Pattaya having a cold one at the same time the bus would be pulling out of Mor Chit.

The local farang watering holes are full of the malcontents who joined the local debating society where they can bitch and moan about their mrs, her family, the heat and humidty, the exchange rate, the Brit gov't ripping them off pension wise, why no ones speaks English etc etc, quite pathetic really.

The self same Thai experts and Old China hands who cant even string a sentence together in Thai, but they can tell us all about the country, LOL, it would be laughable if it werent so true.

  10. To answer the OP, yes its normal, what you talk of others refer to as culture shock, usually sets in when the initail euphoria has worn off and the reality

and some cases the finality of their lifestyle choice sets in.

Some leave for healthcare reasons, some for education opportunites, others leave for pastures new on the corporate ladder.

Some are stuck with properties they cant shift for various reasons, some are trapped by exchange rates and frozen pensions.

The one think all these miserable gits forget to mention, no one put a gun to their head and forced them to move here, and no one is putting a gun to

their head and forcing them to stay.

The one thing in their favour, they at least kept their options open and can choose to leave.

Go read some of the other forums and the tales of woe from those who went all in and are now trapped here.

  11. Boise, Idaho for $500 or less

Boise Idaho, heck even my American friends cant say anything good about the place.

Must rank up there alongside Gary Indiana, or Ferguson, they tell me Detroit has some cheap property.

Sorry, no thanx not for me.

Boise is absolutely beautiful, clean and safe. It's in the middle of massive amounts of farmland. Wonderful people there.

    Take a look, farmland

    City

Edit. Drive around a bit with google earth. It's not fancy, but pristine.

Boise is very nice, as is Coeur d'Alene, ID, which is further north and sits on the magnificent Lake Coeur d'Alene, in the heart of spectacular forests. We swim, run and ride bikes there whenever possible.

    .

And the lake fishing in the mountain meadows is pristine and plentiful. The hiking and camping are fantastic, and still uncrowded.

Beautiful to be sure, is that snow I see there, no thanks.

Many of my American friends moved south to places such as, New Mexico, Texas, Georgia or Kentucky to escape snow and freezing temps, like them I concur, if I ever see snow again it will be too soon.

BTW, if its such a great place, why are there no houses, is it a National Park?

Couldnt see a 7, a noodle stall, pretty women or a motorcycle taxi, sorry not for me.

    Looks lifeless and soulless.

  12. Sauce mai yur krab - Not too much sauce

Mai pet mak krab - Not too spicy

Sauce nit noi krab - Just a little bit of sauce

Pet nit noi krab - Just a little bit spicy

Mai sai prick krab - Don't put in any chilli

Mai sai a-harn-ta-lay krab - Don't put in any sea food

Steak suk suk krab - Steak well done

Suk suk krab - Well done (well cooked)

Rong yim yu nai krab - Where is the gym?

Hong namh yu nai krab - Where is the toilet?

As for steamed chicken/vegetable, I'm not sure what the associated dish would be, unless you mean the chicken breast on a kinda "oily" rice which is quite common in a lot of street restaurants, in which case:

Ow kao mun gai, jaan ning krab - I'll take a plate of oily chicken

Kor kao mun gai, glong ning krab - Can I have a styrofoam box of oily chicken (to take home)

    For food:

    Mu / Moo - Pig/pork

    Gai - Chicken

    Wu-a - Beef

    Bpet - Duck

    Kai-Ge-ow - Omelet

    Pak - Vegetables

    Blah - Fish

    Kao / Cow - Rice

    Blah Murk - Squid/Octopus

    Gung - Prawns

    Kai - Egg

    Kai dow - Fried egg

    Kai dom - Boiled egg

    Pad - Stirfried

Ning / Neung - Steamed (very similar to the Thai word for 1)

    Waan - Sweet

    Bre-ow - Sour

    Pet - Spicy

    Kem - Salty

    Mun - Oily

As with everything, it's difficult to accurately represent things in Latin characters, and these are phonetics from my perspective (As a NZer) however these should help, particularly if also hear some of the words spoken. There is an official way to transcribe Thai words into Latin characters, but unless you're familiar with the system, it can be confusing for English speakers (As it's more intended for transcribing into Latin characters, as opposed to English characters, if that makes sense).

Not going to knock your informative post, excellent effort.

However, if you cant speak Thai I dont see the point in asking this question.

Hong namh yu nai krab - Where is the toilet?

Lets assume you are told in Thai,

go straight its on the left or turn right then go straight on, if you cant speak Thai you wont understand the answer, I dont see the point.

Not knocking the op for his intent, just pointing out one of the shortfalls.

  14. I was about to say Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, but just realised they were Scots, but all liars are annoying.

    Harold Wilson.

    James Callaghan.

    Cherie Blair.

    Prince Andrew.

But remember, there are annoying people in every country.

Before anyone says Transam, No, never.

there are annoying people in every country.

was trying to think of an annoying irishman... then it hit me. BONO.

    Ian Paisley/Gerry Adams

    Roy Keane

I actually like Roy Keane, a winner who had no time for losers, spoke his mind and didnt take s hyt.

Roy is alright in my book.

FYI, I am neither Irish or a Man Ure fan, know a good guy when I see one.
