  1. Yeah it seems a little excessive to me that we need to stay a year

This is your life and if you start making life style changes to make other people feel warm and cozy then your life is over. If the lady really cares about you then your opinion should matter and be willing to side with you on this issue.

Be a man and take back your balls and do what you think is best.

  2. Sounds like malware modified the Userinit area in the registry (replacing the userinit.exe with something like wsaupdater.exe(most common)) and your cleaner (with a particular definition update) removed the wsaupdater.exe(or whatever it was called) file from the system, thus causing the Logon - Logoff loop. That is, when you login to Windows, the 'loading personal settings" will appear, but suddenly it will logoff.

You need the winxp cd so can get into recovery console and perform following.

Booting the pc with winxp cd

    at the recovery console

    type cd system32

    type copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

    type exit

now reboot your pc , you should be able to log into windows (if missing file was above)

goto start , run then type regedit

    find the following registerkey :

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

    Userinit string value should be:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

On a damaged installations it's can be one of these:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,

In this case edit the string to :

    c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

Everything should work fine now !

    Good luck

  3. In the recent past I have stayed at a place called Thuang Thong House located at 21 Sukhumvit Soi 11. Its located up a small alley almost across the street from Grand President Apartments. You get 2 room apartment (bedroom & sitting room/kitchen) with aircon for 800-900 a day depending on length of stay. Owner was always willing to talk about rate based on length of stay, you or she pay the electric and if you want laundry included. Price may be higher to newbies but not sure. She always gave good rate to repeat customers. Most important the place is always clean and its a great place to stay with decent location.

  4. In any case, as you'd be aware, it is simple enough with a Intl DL and a valid foreign one to get a local Thai DL issued with minimal fuss and testing.

Actually, as I just posted in the motor forum, I was just told Friday at the Mae Hong Son vehicle dept. that I had to go thru the entire program of tests regardless of any foreign or int'l DLs I may have... :o

In Korat I showed my California license and they only required the eye test to get Thai license. My Thai wife who also had California license was also only required to take eye test.

  5. This is a bit off subject but do other countries consulates interpret regulations as they see fit or is Thailand the exception?

I think they were in error but its impossible to get corrected. I know the rule for a Tourist Visa is you cannot stay more than 90 days in any 180 day period and Visa on Arrival is three in any 180 period. If not already you might alternate between the two visa types, although it might not help you in this case.

  6. I have been looking at the Eee PC with thoughts of buying. Currently they are going for 11900 in Korat. I am going to Bkk later this week and was wondering if anyone has seen one in Pantip and if so what was the price.

  7. I have been accessing over the last 5 days but with great difficulty getting connected after entering user name and password. Once connected to my box it works great. I like to think my problems are related to the only connection I have from home which is GPRS/Edge. I do get connected after 4-5 tries but thats normal from this connection.

  8. You should be able to get station wagon taxi and the last time I telephoned for a taxi it only cost 20 baht more. If all your boxes will fit in a taxi why not just hire a taxi for the day to take you from place to place collecting all the boxes. I would think 1000-1500 would do it.

  9. Sony is most likely the best to buy unless you start having hardware problems then I think Acer would be better because of repair support. I currently have an Acer that worked great around the world for 2 years then it started having motherboard problems. Dropped off at Acer and picked up two days later with new motherboard installed for $4600 baht. My purchase and repair cost are still way under Sony cost at time of my purchase. Granted you don't want or need downtime but sh__ happens.

On reflection, it may have been my new travel bag that caused the problems. I noted the notebook was being slightly twisted when I packed but blew it off at the time. Upon arrival at destination problems started.

  10. I would buy in country you plan to be living. Its not worth the added hassle and concern about the transport. I did it without any problems from LA to BKK a little over 4 years ago but never again. I was lucky my LCD made it because they opened the bag at LAX and did not repack the same way. AT LAX you are not present, unless that has changed, if they decide to open your bag and you will have no way of knowing how they repack.
