September 17 to 21: San Jao Kuan Ou Chinese Shrine Fair
@ Chinese Shrine in Nabon, Chalong, Muang District
Highlight will be a concert by 'Ko Kai Kalamang' and "Ko Khai Naison",
starting at 5:30pm on September 19
I suppose this is to raise money to further build up the shrine.
September 22 to October 1: 4th Annual DDPM-Phuket Fair @Saphan Hin Central Stage Area
(DDPM-Phuket is the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Phuket Office)
Staged entertainment every night, organized in conjunction with Phuket City Municipality
Expect all the food, entertainment, etc., normally associated with a run-of-the-mill festival at Saphan Hin
No mention of a beer sponsor.

I start this thread every year at this time, and here I go again:
Question: Are any bars or other venues going to show live NFL games this year?
Kindly stick to the query because I don't want this to degenerate into yet another retarded thread with snide comments from people who don't appreciate American football. I think we have all had enough of that...
Thanks in advance.

My daughter studied in an English Program for three years of kindergarten, then switched to a Thai school where she is the only 'look kreung'...she occasionally gets to study with foreign teachers, but for the most part her English comes from home schooling, which includes reading, math and lots and lots of videos.
I don't expect her to get anything out of her English classes with the Thai teachers, but I like the fact that they use her as a resource in the classroom to help her classmates. She is 'class leader' anyway, so this comes naturally to her.
I do notice her pronunciation slipping from time to time, that's my biggest concern about it at the moment.
My goal is to keep her completely bilingual, but its a real tightrope act in terms of keeping her adequately exposed to both.

On the topic of injustice, I think it is unfair to credit this story to The Phuket News when, in fact, it was originally published in a leading mass-circulation daily based in Bangkok that they have a partnership with.
A good report on an often-overlooked issue, though.

Hotel shuttle bus is your cheapest option
http://www.marriott.com/hotelwebsites/us/h/hktjw/hktjw_pdf/3HKTJW_Shuttle%20Bus%20Timetable.pdf
Is that the Marriott's bus (or is it a van?) open to the general public for use?
If so, I am surprised the Karon tuk-tuk mafia hasn't vandalized it or harmed anyone yet....
Are the prices quoted per person, or per group?
I love the fact that the fare to Patong is more that to Phuket Town, even though it is well less than half the distance...really reflects reality "on the ground".

All in all the title of the thread has proved to be incorrect. It really has not been the fiasco some people expected. Sure there have been delays on occasion, but it really has not been very bad.
The current traffic woes in the construction area are just the appetizer, the true nature of the fiasco will only reveal itself when this ill-conceived project is completed...with little or no improvement to the overall traffic flow. As soon as they cut the ribbon, the narrow stretch of Chao Fa West southbound just south of the project will become the worst bottleneck on the island, and it will back up all the way to, and into, the underpass.
So sad that Phuket just follows Bangkok trends: huge billboards, 3D-traffic jams, etc...too bad they couldn't have the same level of public transport as the capital.

Those or any other people who try to sell their religions, mostly to people with weak minds, should be treated the way they are trying to do to others. If they wish to play with the minds, then it's quite ok to play with theirs.
Invite them in. Let them be be all exited and remember to say things like "hmm, that makes sense" etc. After an while, when you get tired, just say "No thanks, your way of life is no fun at all. I choose Satan, he got the best parties." .. and gently direct them outside. They are not likely to come back as you are already a lost soul.
I think it is best to treat them like insane people or other door-to-door salesmen and just ignore them completely; once they have your attention they will only waste your time.
The only exception is if they are attractive, young females (aka bible bangers).

Sept 5 & 6:
Crying Fowl:
Cheap (govt subsidized) chicken and eggs available from 7am to 11am at the Department of Internal Trade office at the corner of Montri and Luang Paw Road in Phuket Town.
They don't say how much, but expect a big crowd there to take advantage, despite the almost negligible publicity.
(photo of sign taken on the street outside their office)
Sept 7:
Snakeheads take note:
Miss Teen Thailand Southern Regional Finals.
@ Central Festival Phuket
8am to 6pm
Channel 7 to sponsor

Tonight: Phuket FC v Ayutthaya
Surakul Stadium; kickoff 6:30pm
Entry 100 baht, kids free.
Get there by 6pm to get good, covered seats.
It seems like the Islanders have no realistic chance for promotion this season, but a loss in this match could start a real slide toward the relegation zone as Ayutthaya is the only team in DIV 1 without a road win.

There is an association that rents out a wide variety of bikes at Saphan Hin and also has some for sale.
Anyway, they have a little shop near the Central Stage Area, near the police box and the entrance to the mangrove walkway.
You might check them out too.
I would like to try cycling too, but from my experience driving a car here the cyclists are a particular nuisance because they tend to go at a very strange rate, something like a "no man's land" velocity that makes them hard to maneuver around. That said, it's amazing that there aren't more reports of cyclists getting hit by cars and motorbikes.
When I move to the sticks (Ranode, Songkhla) the first thing I will do is get a mountain bike, but I just don't have the nerve to ride one in Phuket Town.
As for buying a mountain bike, if anyone has a big one (I am 6'3" (189cm)) they want to unload second hand pls let me know.

We are planning a one-night, family trip to Koh Yao and are wondering if anyone has advice on which is better: Koh Yao Noi or Koh Yao Yai?
We would like to do a homestay if possible and get a taste of the local culture. If anyone has any contacts or recommendations they would be much appreciated...

Phuket City Municipality had Burmese lessons for kids at Saphan Hin over the summer. If you contact their office at Saphan Hin perhaps they could give you the number of the teacher. Satree Phuket School has also offered Burmese lessons to adults in the past.
I agree that 600 baht per hour is way too high, especially given that most Burmese on the island get the 300bt/hour minimum wage for much more strenuous work. However, if you want a teacher that speaks English and is qualified then of course it would be more...
Another thing you might try is to contact one of the 'brokers' who deal with Burmese labor issues. One is Noom Broker, who have an office at Karn Keha in Rassada and another on Thepkasatri southbound, just north of Supercheap.
There is another next to the new Municipal Market on Ranong Road in Phuket Town.
If you do find someone please let me know via PM, as I am interested in this as well.

>>The job is situated on the west side of the island just north of the city of Phuket.
That helps a little, but not much. OP, FYI, posters are trying to help you but your style isn't really endearing anyone to make any extra effort. My best answer would be Kathu for location and "thaivisa search" for school information from the many school threads that are available.
If the job is 'just north' of Phuket Town, then it is most definitely not on the west side of the island, so it is still very unclear where the job is: Koh Kaew? Rassada? Kathu?. As pointed out by Oilinki, that is the best starting point.
I have been studying the rental market a lot lately and know for a fact that it is easy to find nice, new detached homes in many residential estates
on the island for under 30,000 baht/month, at least in/around Phuket Town.
It's a real 'renters' market' here at the moment, due to oversupply.

Aug 27 - Sept 5: 2nd Annual Phuket Town "3 Generations Festival" (my translation), organized by Phuket City Municipality and the Phuket Elderly Association.
Location: central stage area
Activities to include students shows and 'ramwong' dances.
This may not sound too inspiring, but last year's inaugural event was pretty good -- if you are into cheap food, free entertainment and beer.
Note: For those who don't get to Saphan Hin often, they have repaved Soi Saphan Hin (the shortcut from Nimitr Circle to Saphan Hin) and done away with all the speed bumps and not-to-grade drainage basin covers. It's still way to narrow to drive comfortably, but an improvement.
There is also a new Paknam Seafood Restaurant along there, near the turnoff to the Saen Suk Community. It looks pretty nice, but I am not sure about the location.
Anyway, if the food is as good as the one in Rassada people will find it.

You might also try at Dr Sanguan's clinic in Samkong. He is world renowned and a great man as well. Last time I checked he was affiliated with Phuket International Hospital as well.

Phuket FC v Air Force United tonight (Aug 21) @Surakul Stadium. Kickoff 6:30.
This is a big match for the team, now playing well under yet another new coach.
AirForce United are tied for 1st place with 48 points, while Phuket are in seventh place (tied with Saraburi).

The Export shop inside Robinsons. Go in the main entrance, past the little cafe, and it is the first business on the left. There is a store on the third floor of Central that has some stuff as well.
I believe the Export shop sells stuff that was made in this region for export (hence the name), but then didn't pass QA/QC so they just want to unload it. Most of the flaws, where visible, are quite minor, but it is still good to check.

660 users on this topic at the moment: that must be some kind of record...the story has definitely touched more some nerves.

Yes, OP, that is correct. My girlfriend does exactly the same. No, on the other hand, is denoted by a short, sharp buzzing sound. (lasting around 0.3 seconds)
Took me a fair while to decipher the meaning.
Thanks for the confirmation...look forward to when she starts buzzing like R2D2!

I would like to apply, but I was told applicants who have already applied have to pay a fee every year while their application is under consideration...does anyone know if that is true and, if so, how much the fee is?
