  1. Those or any other people who try to sell their religions, mostly to people with weak minds, should be treated the way they are trying to do to others. If they wish to play with the minds, then it's quite ok to play with theirs.

Invite them in. Let them be be all exited and remember to say things like "hmm, that makes sense" etc. After an while, when you get tired, just say "No thanks, your way of life is no fun at all. I choose Satan, he got the best parties." .. and gently direct them outside. They are not likely to come back as you are already a lost soul.

I think it is best to treat them like insane people or other door-to-door salesmen and just ignore them completely; once they have your attention they will only waste your time.

The only exception is if they are attractive, young females (aka bible bangers).

  2. Sept 5 & 6:

    Crying Fowl:

Cheap (govt subsidized) chicken and eggs available from 7am to 11am at the Department of Internal Trade office at the corner of Montri and Luang Paw Road in Phuket Town.

They don't say how much, but expect a big crowd there to take advantage, despite the almost negligible publicity.

(photo of sign taken on the street outside their office)

    Sept 7:

    Snakeheads take note:

Miss Teen Thailand Southern Regional Finals.

    @ Central Festival Phuket

    8am to 6pm

    Channel 7 to sponsor

  3. I was walking aimlessly past there today and saw some workman sprucing up the place.

One of them told me that it would be re-opening "within a month" as a gallery selling local art.

It seems like a waste to me given what a prime location it is.

  4. Tonight: Phuket FC v Ayutthaya

    Surakul Stadium; kickoff 6:30pm

    Entry 100 baht, kids free.

Get there by 6pm to get good, covered seats.

It seems like the Islanders have no realistic chance for promotion this season, but a loss in this match could start a real slide toward the relegation zone as Ayutthaya is the only team in DIV 1 without a road win.

  5. There is an association that rents out a wide variety of bikes at Saphan Hin and also has some for sale.

Anyway, they have a little shop near the Central Stage Area, near the police box and the entrance to the mangrove walkway.

You might check them out too.

I would like to try cycling too, but from my experience driving a car here the cyclists are a particular nuisance because they tend to go at a very strange rate, something like a "no man's land" velocity that makes them hard to maneuver around. That said, it's amazing that there aren't more reports of cyclists getting hit by cars and motorbikes.

When I move to the sticks (Ranode, Songkhla) the first thing I will do is get a mountain bike, but I just don't have the nerve to ride one in Phuket Town.

As for buying a mountain bike, if anyone has a big one (I am 6'3" (189cm)) they want to unload second hand pls let me know.

  6. We are planning a one-night, family trip to Koh Yao and are wondering if anyone has advice on which is better: Koh Yao Noi or Koh Yao Yai?

We would like to do a homestay if possible and get a taste of the local culture. If anyone has any contacts or recommendations they would be much appreciated...

  7. Phuket City Municipality had Burmese lessons for kids at Saphan Hin over the summer. If you contact their office at Saphan Hin perhaps they could give you the number of the teacher. Satree Phuket School has also offered Burmese lessons to adults in the past.

I agree that 600 baht per hour is way too high, especially given that most Burmese on the island get the 300bt/hour minimum wage for much more strenuous work. However, if you want a teacher that speaks English and is qualified then of course it would be more...

Another thing you might try is to contact one of the 'brokers' who deal with Burmese labor issues. One is Noom Broker, who have an office at Karn Keha in Rassada and another on Thepkasatri southbound, just north of Supercheap.

There is another next to the new Municipal Market on Ranong Road in Phuket Town.

If you do find someone please let me know via PM, as I am interested in this as well.

  8. I reckon the potential for penile penmanship might be one of the only things I miss about New England and Canadian winters...It's tough dotting those 'i's and crossing those 't's, though!

  9. >>The job is situated on the west side of the island just north of the city of Phuket.

That helps a little, but not much. OP, FYI, posters are trying to help you but your style isn't really endearing anyone to make any extra effort. My best answer would be Kathu for location and "thaivisa search" for school information from the many school threads that are available.

If the job is 'just north' of Phuket Town, then it is most definitely not on the west side of the island, so it is still very unclear where the job is: Koh Kaew? Rassada? Kathu?. As pointed out by Oilinki, that is the best starting point.

I have been studying the rental market a lot lately and know for a fact that it is easy to find nice, new detached homes in many residential estates

on the island for under 30,000 baht/month, at least in/around Phuket Town.

It's a real 'renters' market' here at the moment, due to oversupply.

  10. Aug 27 - Sept 5: 2nd Annual Phuket Town "3 Generations Festival" (my translation), organized by Phuket City Municipality and the Phuket Elderly Association.

    Location: central stage area

Activities to include students shows and 'ramwong' dances.

This may not sound too inspiring, but last year's inaugural event was pretty good -- if you are into cheap food, free entertainment and beer.

Note: For those who don't get to Saphan Hin often, they have repaved Soi Saphan Hin (the shortcut from Nimitr Circle to Saphan Hin) and done away with all the speed bumps and not-to-grade drainage basin covers. It's still way to narrow to drive comfortably, but an improvement.

There is also a new Paknam Seafood Restaurant along there, near the turnoff to the Saen Suk Community. It looks pretty nice, but I am not sure about the location.

Anyway, if the food is as good as the one in Rassada people will find it.

  11. Phuket FC v Air Force United tonight (Aug 21) @Surakul Stadium. Kickoff 6:30.

This is a big match for the team, now playing well under yet another new coach.

AirForce United are tied for 1st place with 48 points, while Phuket are in seventh place (tied with Saraburi).

  12. The Export shop inside Robinsons. Go in the main entrance, past the little cafe, and it is the first business on the left. There is a store on the third floor of Central that has some stuff as well.

I believe the Export shop sells stuff that was made in this region for export (hence the name), but then didn't pass QA/QC so they just want to unload it. Most of the flaws, where visible, are quite minor, but it is still good to check.

  13. Yes, OP, that is correct. My girlfriend does exactly the same. No, on the other hand, is denoted by a short, sharp buzzing sound. (lasting around 0.3 seconds)

Took me a fair while to decipher the meaning.

Thanks for the confirmation...look forward to when she starts buzzing like R2D2!

  14. Thanks for all the feedback; I find it strange that this behavior is so widespread since I have never noticed it before. Anyway, I am going to tell her to knock it off...it seems like (non-human) primate behavior to me.

  15. Interesting. She went to a private school (Kajonkiet EP Program) for kindergarten, but I took her out for primary because I didn't like some of the behavior I was seeing in the older kids there and wanted her to be more "Thai". (she is a look kreung)...for English, she gets home schooling.

Anyway, I don't want to turn this into another thread on the relative merits of the various schools on the island: I just want to get a handle on this social phenomenon...

  16. It's beautiful today, but next time the rain gets you down try the following recipe, which I call 'monsoon stew'.

    http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2012/01/30-minute-pasta-and-kidney-bean-soup-pasta-e-fagioli-recipe.html

btw, does anyone know of a good bakery for baguettes in Phuket Town? The ones at Tops supermarket are tougher than leather, and this stew really needs to be eaten with bread...(No, I don't want to go to Chalong or Rawai or anywhere along the bypass road)

  17. When I ask my daughter (age 7) a question and the answer is affirmative, rather than say 'yes' she just raises her eyebrows several times.

I don't know where she picked this up or exactly what to make of it, although as a parent I find it vaguely disrespectful.

My daughter goes to a municipal school in Phuket Town and she says all the kids there do this.

Anyway, I am just curious if this behavior is just a passing fad at her school or if it is more widespread on the island, or elsewhere.

  18. This is one of the ones that was closed when I was on my pizza-finding mission, but given your strong recommendation I will try again soon...thanks wai2.gif

Spaghetti & C. Not much of an atmosphere but the pasta's and pizza's are great and cheap. My favorite is the pizza salmon (160 Baht). Ratsada Road, turn left right after the Bank of Ayudhya, then about a hundred metres on your right hand side.

  19. It sounds to me like you should get a serviced apartment somewhere in a central location (Phuket Town, Kathu, Rassada, etc.) until you actually land a job, then look again. If you were to move to Rawai, for example, then got a job in Cherng Talay or Kamala (for example) you would soon find yourself spending more time stuck in traffic than wielding a spatula...
