I often use the second class air con sleeper BKK-UBON (12 hour trip!!!). I am 1.84 cm so that would be...6.03 feet?
I feel the lower bunk is already 5 - 10 cm too short for me. I can compensate a bit by lying
diagonal, but I never really sleep comfortable. Would add that I keep a plastic bag with most
valuable belongings under the mattras as a precaution.
Word of advice to OP: try to get a bunk not too close to the door, too noisy.
That goes against what the rest have said. Not that Im doubting you, after all if you don't fit then you don't fit but you are 6ft and a 1/2 inch tall
others being 6ft and 4 inches tall say they are okay and the publicized length is 6ft and 5 inches,
now its confusing. You sure your height is measured right?

Yes, take a SLEEPER. At least if you're in the "Land of NOD" when the train runs off the rails, as is quite common these days, you may die without even having to suffer from shock.
you may also die from a heart attack at home in your sleep which is quite common, but no one would find you for months

I am 6' tall and had a good few more inches to spare when stretched out on the bed on the sleeper going south from BKK.
cheers
Thanks Jay! I bet your glad you could finally use that foot photo

I used to travel a lot 2nd class sleeper and had no problem that I remember, I'm 6' 4".
Now, I travel 1st class and get a separatee compartment with bunk beds which have plenty of room. ONly 1000 baht for the 4 of us - Khon Kaen to Bangkok.
is there a power point in 1st class?

Thanks for the replies Sounds like it should be okay. Has any one else noticed they have discontinued the official booking website? I guess bookings will be done either at travel agents or the Main station.

I want to join a friend in some train travel trips.
How big are the sleepers on Thai Trains? Im 6ft3" tall however I read on the train website that the bottom sleeper is 6ft 5" in length.
Can any one who has traveled comment on this?

2 nights together. 138,ooo per night. I think he has set a new level and even put the Japanese to shame

Could he have a trial first or does he have to be guilty because he has been arrested by people who most posters consider totally corrupt?

I usually buy striploin @ 325 baht a Kg.
The steak is tender enough and in general ok, but the taste is not very strong.
I have yet to find Thai rib eye steaks of acceptable quality.
You will never find one, mainly because Thai cows are only bred and fed for dairy. What you get at the slaughter house is a very ordinary looking moo moo

whole bunch of fat chicks in there

"soy david"

One way the overstayers make it hard for the rest of us is when they have a medical emergency and end up in a government hospital, which has a human rights obligation to treat people with medical emergencies regardless of immigration status. People who are on long-term overstay often don't have sufficient funds to cover a medical emergency -- if they had a reserve fund, they wouldn't have let themselves get on overstay.
If it gets to be a big enough problem, the Thai rules/laws could be changed to require things like mandatory health insurance for foreigners, depositing of a bond with the Thai government, etc. Those are things which would affect those of us who are following the rules.
seriously how many expats living on a pension or punters desperate to stay here actually have adequate funds for medical emergencies?
All thai insurance policies cover you for not much and a good emergency only, 1 year travelers policy cost around $600

worried?? this is nothing, its just the holding cell at the airport! LOL
seriously the OP needs to make sure he does not get stopped before reaching the airport by the police. The chances are only small but I did get pulled up once when the BIB pulled my taxi over to question the driver.

...so arrival numbers are an important part of the criteria...
Having tens of thousands of foreigners living here on a tourist visa
helps, each and every time they 'pop-out' for a new exemption and/or stamp to
activate next part of current visa, they become a NEW arrival...again; quite
cunning, if you want to raise the number [on paper] of newcomers.
Watch-out guys, your 15-day stay could soon be down to 10.
seriously the amount of expats doing visa runs is so minisical in the grand scale that it doesn't even rate a mention. There is a large slice of these that are 50 or married that dont need to do a run either

What is it with the food? Shockingly bad ingredients? Shockingly bad cooks?
looking at this CNN travel guide with nice pictures the food looks greasy and a cholesterol nightmare

thanks for all the advice guys, much appreciated.
i think i have some serious thinking to do as the wife and i have been arguing all week over some petty things, and if there is a chance that she can take half of everything i own, and force me to sell the house etc, then i am starting to think i would be daft to risk it
i am not sure why 7x7 stated that a pre nuptial would not be legally binding.... surely that is the point of a pre nup, that it is legally binding..... why do you think it wouldnt be binding 7x7?
we would be living in a large city in UK, so my wife would make some thai friends quickly, so i think the collective knowledge mentioned earlier would soon be shared with her, and she would be aware of her rights to half my everything..... would probably lay claim to one of my kidneys too if she thought she could find use for it
Just don't risk it.
If you decide to end your marriage remember this.
Silence is golden.
Quietly square up your affairs in Thailand.
Then fly out without as much as a goodbye.
Do not subject yourself to the brain damage or worse that will follow if you tell her you want a divorce.
Just be clinical.
Square up your business.
Then leave.
excellent advice

And so, let the predictable Thai bashing begin.
Actually, even after thirty-plus years of travel and living in Thailand ... and being fully aware of it's many flaws and warts ... I still very much love Thailand, it's culture and it's people.
Well that's a lovely bit of nostalgia there Ed
Many of us here love Thailand too, that's why we're here but as LincsLad says, this is related to spending and seeing as BKK is so f*cking pricey these days, hardly a good or accurate gauge of the city's real popularity.
Pricey alright and new condo prices through the roof! A lot of farang are choosing to live here because its still cheaper than western cities but no by much anymore and the gap is closing

Jim you will take her regardless , you and us know this. You will also lose your assets eventually
so better start another thread on how to live on food stamps, that way your prepared.

I cant help thinking that Thailand has a heroin problem because there is nobody at customs checking your bags. To easy for mules to get in , much to easy..
Train sleeper , how big are they?

Okay guys here are the official numbers sent to me from thai rail today
1st class L194 cm x W80 cm
2nd class L186 cm x W72-102 cm(width up to bogie)
186cm = 6ft.1" for second class sleeper. Im guessing a few inches can be gained by sleeping diagonally
