  1. Some time ago I was talking with a couple of guys and one said he had just bought a CD which had an electronic map of Chiang Mai. From memory it had most of the towns (major) in Thailand but I was specifically interested in CM. I have looked around but not found anything like it.

    Lots of times I get asked for a map or directions in eMails etc and this would make it much easier.

    The map can be zoomed down to a just a couple of streets or give the overview of the whole of CM. It can be cut and pasted into other applications including Mail etc.

    Has anyone seen this and if so where can I get a copy?

    I have CD maps for Thailand and Bangkok bought at Se-Ed bookstores or online. Their website

    is not showing anything for Chiangmai but perhaps it has not been updated yet.

    The GPS maps for Thailand are good but I don't know if you can get a stand-alone CD version. Might be worth checking the GPS shop in Panthip Plaza?

  2. My dealer just sent my F1 box to Bangkok for a hardware upgrade to work with the new codes. Anyone else know about this?

    I've got an F1 box and have been downloading the new software versions to it as they are released (currently on L367) but have not heard about any hardware upgrades. Had to manually insert a new code for the Dream network yesterday and was able to watch the Super 14 games. I have to use another box to watch the Cricket World Cup live though.

  3. as of last night....

    It's deader than a doornail now [both my newshine and dream 500] and i just called my Dynasat vendor and he tells me that it is down and he [hopes] to have a new code in 3-4 days.......

    i have read some posts on another thread and some suggest that the Philippines are finally getting wise to us 'pirates' and have replaced their antiquated scrambling software with newer harder to de-scramble codes. let's hope that our honeymoon is not over!!

    reports from others would be appreciated.....

    I replaced code yesterday (22/3 about 18:30) and it's working fine again.

  4. On your recommendation [meaning Ulysses G.'s], I'll give it a shot...

    He has been known to go there day after day, lunch and dinner . . . for the very same meal over and over! :D

    Rasseru is joking. I go there about once a week and try all different things.

    I don't want to build up expectations too much - especially for Brits who I assume have had the best back in Blighty - however, I did have fish and chips and a couple of beer Laos there last night and was quite satisfied.

    They use real cod (probably frozen) and it is certainly the best that I have had in Chiang Mai (I haven't tried Downunder yet), but I doubt if it would stick out back in the old country. The chips are real British chips and they have malt vinegar which I love. :o

    UG has a food fixation - I thought this thread was about drinking places?

    My Axis of Evil depends on where I'm staying but usually includes UN Irish, Mad Dog and O'Malleys. The first two because of affable hosts and sport and the third because it is air-conditioned and in walking distance of where I sometimes stay.

    I've only been to the Laughing Leprechaun once and was very impressed but thought it might be a bit quiet for drinking. Next time I'm in town I will certainly give Tuskers a shot after reading so much about it here.

  6. Mine is hopeless tonight (22:00) with signal strength about 65% but was OK during the day. My guess is that the problem is weather related. It won't matter what decoder you are using if the signal can't get to your dish.

  7. i was watching Snake on the plane some week ago .

    this woman drink Oil first or rather coat her mouth with Oil .. then suck the poison out .. sou8nd logical to me as coating the mouth with oil will kinda prevent your from getting poison ..

    is it a good idea or just some sound good but total myth

    I have seen this done (I was the victim) and the person who did it for me (my father) first rinsed their mouth with potassium permanganate solution, which was a common disinfectant in the olden days, and again after sucking the poison and blood out. The fear was that the venom could enter the first aid giver through any unknown dental cavities or mouth lesions.

    This method is not recommended anymore. I was bitten by a tiger snake, which are quite venomous, but the method was done immediately and neither I nor my father had any ill effects although we were able to get to a hospital within 30 minutes that had the anti-venene.

    I also saw SOAP and it reminded me of this incident. I do know that coating the snake in olive oil and then frying them renders them much less harmful.

  8. It will depend if Asahi or Payap girls like blokes with mullets. These are compulsory for Crows supporters.

    A typical Crows supporters family (complete with mullets).. :o

    Is that woman wearing a Payap uniform? I can't make out the silver buttons.

  9. I'll check that out sometime - it is round the corner from me.

    Babylon owner (previous owner's daughter) and staff have moved and opened the Arcoba Leno after old Renato died. Same menu and same good quality but bigger premises. Not sure if the old premises in Huay Kaew are being operated by anyone else.

    I was there two weeks ago and the menu hadn't changed. Same photos on the wall etc..

    That's good news then. Maybe the wife is running the original one although she must be a fair vintage too. Don't know how many kids they had.

    The bloke that was the head waiter for decades is at the Arcoba Leno now.

  10. Anyone aware if the 1st game of the Cricket world cup is on in any bars tonight?

    You are obviously a cricket fan. May I suggest you check out the up and coming international cricket festival on your doorstep here in Chiangmai starting on the 1st of next month at the Gymkhana Club.

    wouldnt mind checkin out a few games myself, but UBC isnt showing it- surprise surprise :o

    I guess the time zone factor wont be good for viewing in a bar in LOS anyway as they will be closed

    I watched the Aus-Scotland game at 8PM on the South African satellite so expect it would have been on at the UN Irish Pub.

  11. I have a system where I get all the Multichoice sports channels from South Africa (Super 14 Rugby, all international Rugby matches, ICC World Cup and other cricket matches) but you need an "always on" internet connection. It is a moveable dish so I also get Australia Network with NRL and AFL games.

  12. This was written about Blinky Bill when he was in his late teens (1896). Shows that there is a precedent for his recent performance on the kart track:

    BLINKY BILL'S BICYCLE by A.B. "Banjo" Paterson

    'Twas Blinky Bill, from Eaglehawk, that caught the cycling craze;

    He turned away the good old horse that served him many days;

    He dressed himself in cycling clothes, resplendent to be seen;

    He hurried off to town and bought a shining new machine;

    And as he wheeled it through the door, with air of lordly pride,

    The grinning shop assistant said, "Excuse me, can you ride?"

    "See here, young man," said Blinky Bill, "from Walgett to the sea,

    From Conroy's Gap to Castlereagh, there's none can ride like me.

    I'm good all round at everything as everybody knows,

    Although I'm not the one to talk - I hate a man that blows.

    But riding is my special gift, my chiefest, sole delight;

    Just ask a wild duck can it swim, a wildcat can it fight.

    There's nothing clothed in hair or hide, or built of flesh or steel,

    There's nothing walks or jumps, or runs, on axle, hoof, or wheel,

    But what I'll sit, while hide will hold and girths and straps are tight:

    I'll ride this here two-wheeled concern right straight away at sight."

    'Twas Blinky Bill, from Eaglehawk, that sought his own abode,

    That perched above Dead Man's Creek, beside the mountain road.

    He turned the cycle down the hill and mounted for the fray,

    But 'ere he'd gone a dozen yards it bolted clean away.

    It left the track, and through the trees, just like a silver steak,

    It whistled down the awful slope towards the Dead Man's Creek.

    It shaved a stump by half an inch, it dodged a big white-box:

    The very wallaroos in fright went scrambling up the rocks,

    The wombats hiding in their caves dug deeper underground,

    As Blinky Bill, as white as chalk, sat tight to every bound.

    It struck a stone and gave a spring that cleared a fallen tree,

    It raced beside a precipice as close as close could be;

    And then as Blinky Bill let out one last despairing shriek

    It made a leap of twenty feet into the Dean Man's Creek.

    'Twas Blinky Bill, from Eaglehawk, that slowly swam ashore:

    He said, "I've had some narrer shaves and lively rides before;

    I've rode a wild bull round a yard to win a five-pound bet,

    But this was the most awful ride that I've encountered yet.

    I'll give that two-wheeled outlaw best; it's shaken all my nerve

    To feel it whistle through the air and plunge and buck and swerve.

    It's safe at rest in Dead Man's Creek, we'll leave it lying still;

    A horse's back is good enough henceforth for Blinky Bill."

  13. As excitement builds towards the big day, I'm tempted to travel to Chiangmai to see the race and the footy. However Saturday is a Butchers' Picnic and I'm worried the pubs will be closed. Can anybody tell me which drinking establishments, if any, will be open?

  14. I have been thinking of opening a massage parlour outside Chiangmai. How many girls with numbers would you estimate could be seated comfortably in the tanks?
