Pigs are up ,so is beef 200Bart /Kg, been like it for a while now,as for cattle ,dairy heifer prices going up all the time, approaching very silly prices, buyers are comeing from Vietnam to buy our heifers,I think they are thinking of ASEN ,for potential new markets.
Rent dont't buy, some of our farmers are harvesting maize, and are getting 5 bart /Kg,picking cobs, same price as last year, 7 bart combining the crop, but yet to see a combine .With production cost going up ,and thanks to sugar cane and cassava, land rent prices have gone up, to useing contractors to do every thing,(dog and stick farming),you will certaly be walking away with a loss, margins are getting tighter all the time.
You have got own land and equipment to make any thing, but it might all go full circle, making renting viable again.
You do have a good point about renting, walking away with just a suit case in your hand, if it goes pear shaped has a lot to be said .

    What is ASEN ?

  2.

I think IA has made a good point here.
Not involved in either but can see that the rubber biz seems a big downer right now but pigs is good.
I am now paying 170Baht/kilo for pork at the market up from 125 just 6 months ago.
Price is everything. Trying to predict it is very very tricky and just the same as gambling on stocks and shares.
Rubber is a longer term investment but has a big disadvantage in that unlike stocks you cannot liquidate quickly if things look bad.
Combined with the laws about land ownership here it seems short term easily escaped from investments should be the order of the day.
Rent don't buy, be it land or equipment, and you can if needs be walk away with limited losses and make more money if things go well.

What do you know about piggery business/farming ? Read more... I made "BIG" money raring pigs in the past, don't need prediction. whistling.gif

  3. Let's talk about production like the different type of pellet feed. In my village of 182 household, half are raising backyard frogs in tanks for self consumption. All of them use pellet feed for rearing fishes. All of them tried pellet feed from many village shops selling them... They complained their froglets slow ADG, came to my shop to make enquiry regarding my catfish feed. Price different by ฿200/ sack. SHOCK !!! laugh.png

"I'm using it to rare my Clarias, not meant to sell. It's costly because it's a Premium feed, top of the range" sad.png

"OK. Let's try your Premium Feed ! angry.png.pagespeed.ce.Cla6z9sEn6.png I want to see what's so special about your feed ! dry.png.pagespeed.ce.iCXmiFQmCf.png "

All it tooks was just this one customer... and i had to stock an additional supply of up to 400 sacks a month just to supply to my community. Amazed at the power of "word of mouth".

They realised the huge difference in ADG and lessen the bad smell and water foul up...

Top of the range Premium Feed. biggrin.png  Pay peanuts you get monkey, pay bananas you get the elephant...

  4. I bought some EM to get rid of odors in my dogs toilet area and was pleased with the results so I tried to find out more. If anyone wants to try a google search "How effective are ‘Effective microorganisms" the scientific community say there are no benefits that is after many years of research.

    Teletiger...Why bother ?

  5. When i was a city boy, it is among the dishes i will order without fail when i dine in an French restaurant. I found out there are farmed, purged and served with garlic butter. It is the garlic butter that was the draw rather than the snail.

Then i got a job as an French restaurant (Fourchettes) outlet bartender in a top hotel and my outlet bar is inside the kitchen facing the cooks and chefs cooking. If there is an order for snails, the cook will open a CAN of commercially sold Escargot, stuff them into empty shells (wash and reuse every time). Top off with garlic butter and arrange them on the holder tray, then bake. Serve and sold as the pricey PREMIUM Escargot à la carte. laugh.png

Now as a rural dweller, i got eery after finding out about the parasites and pathogens living in the delicious Escargot. sick.gif

Youtube got a lot of video about the parasites in snails.

  6. I was doing some research last week because my customer was asking me where he can buy the ready made plastic botom hapa and found the website.

  7. I would mix 2 litre of EM,2 litre of molasses and 40 litre of water and tightly seal in a 66 litre bin container for 4-7 days, then transfer the fermented contain and mix into your 150 litre water set up and irrigate through spriklers system...

    That is what I'd do...

  8. You can do it in 3 ways.

    1. That is no harm in using EM straight from the bottle, just pour the 1 litre of EM into a 20 litre tank of water (back pack sprayer) and spray off on the 300sqm lawn immediately. No need to add sugar cane molasses (the black sticky liquid of sweet & sour smell).

    2. For future usage and of economical reason, expand the density and the shelf live of EM by mixing with 1 litre of molasses, 1 litre of EM and 18 litre of water (stir until molasses dissolve). Now you have 20 litre of EMA (secondary brew), distribute them into 20 (1 litre) plastic Cola bottles, seal the bottle tight and store in a dark cool place with no sunlight. Shelf live is best before 6 months but once you open the bottle you should use it within 7 days for result.

Just grab a couple of bottles and mix in the 20 liter backpack sprayer and use immediately. Don't do a third brew with additional molasses and water, it is unbalance and PH level is very acidic.

    3. If you do a EMA base on 1/3 of each ingredients. Mixing 1 litre of EM, 1 litre of molasses and 1 litre of water (stir until molasses dissolve), distribute into 3 plastic Cola bottles ( 1 litre/bottle) and store in a dark cool place with no sunlight. Shelf live is 3 years.

I am among a few posters here using EM on regular basis.

    Cheers smile.png

Thanks for the comprehensive reply, you are the poster I was waiting for.

I've set my mind already on distributing it through the irrigation system though, as I have purchased the whole setup already. 150 liter tank connected to the system.

I have about 800 m² of lawn divided into 3 more or less equal zones. Do I understand that I will need 1 liter of EM per zone or can I make more use of it by mixing the molasses with it ?

Can it be used straight after I mixed it with the molasses or does it need some "maturing" time ?

Yes you can use it "straight from the bottle" (the 1st way) if you are in a hurry. You can pour in 2 litre of EM into 200 litre of water and use it straight away. The more you put in the better the ratio and strength.

But for future use, apply the 2nd way...for economical reason. You can use it straight after mixing with molasses but that defeat the purpose of expanding the groups of bacterias. Usually you let it ferment for 4-7 days when applying EMA method so that certain groups of bacteria will multiply. The indicator is when you see white light brownish yeast appear as a top layer and the liquid turns slight reddish brown (but not black colour as in the initial stage).

I would suggest you apply the 1st method at your own convenience... and also proceed to do the 2nd method at the same time. So as to once your first application is completed, you will have enough of the EMA brew in bottles store away for future use.

As I've mention before in past posts, there is no negative impact resulting in wrong mixing ratio, only positive (if use within a short period of time) ...but avoid doing a 3rd brew with additional molasses and water.

  9. Me red bullhorn, been reading about your catfish farm for a few years now. Interesting. I'm small scale at the moment but doing ok with big oui. I've just started using Thai visa. Don't want any tips about fish farming but can u give me some on thaivisa?

    Sorry, come again ?

I'm kind of confuse here... laugh.png

What is it that you like to know about Thaivisa ? smile.png

  10. As for my Clarias, i need to fulfill my quota, or i will lose out on my spot/queue. There is a window period like in the piggery industry to get the good price according to seasonal supply and demand. To ride with the tides...

It is not just wholesale prices I'm taking about here in regards to my trade and it is the same with some other produce/product... but I also need to emphasize on target market.

In Clarias catfish farming, obtaining the right sizes per kilogram is crucial...and it must be decided on the ability of my wholesalers to accept them base on the sizes they are comfortable with. They too understand the importance of the phrase "Pond owners can survive, we wholesalers can survive". Market cater to different sizes. For example, Mae Hong Son consumers like their Pla Duk in sizes Jumbo/2/3 fishes per kilo. Amphur Theong and Muang Chiang Rai like theirs in sizes 4/5/6 fishes per kilo, tambon Ban Mai like theirs 2/3/4 fishes per kilo and Amphur Mae Sai accept theirs in sizes 3/4/5/6 fishes per kilo. So i need to cater to them all from Jumbo/2/3/4/5/6 fishes per kilo. I get my sales base on my yield and they get their sizes to sell to their retailers.

It is more hectic in Pla Duk farming i must admit because i need to pay attention to the supply and demand of different seasons, I will farm max output on the 1st season, 80% of my total output or divide into batches for the raining season so that i don't get struck in the queue and then max out again on the cold season.

Hectic in another form too because i need to constantly make sure i will get my supply of fingerlings before they ran out due to over demand for my favourable sizes of 3''-4'' fingerlings. Even though i lock my quantity and paid a deposit in advance, sometimes i would get only 90% of my order.

  11. You shouldn't have that kind of a contradicting pessimistic thoughts.

There is an established system we call it - queue. Seasoned farmers/investors know and are inform by wholesalers when to line up our produce/product accordingly. From experience we learn and got to know how the trade system works.

  12. i never thought ide see the day when talk like this got into the farming section,,,,,,,,,

Could be due to the heat, 37°C... and people are desperate when they don't have enough money, bills are piling up, couldn't get money from their pledged rice since last year. Ran out of luck, didn't manage their money well enough, made expensive mistake that can't be undo... Attitude problem, trolling...etc etc.

All will be good once the lent starts and the rain comes. laugh.png

  13. All this while you are only assuming base on maths regarding the output of your well and submersible pump. There's no a good way to start a commercial farming business. Have you done your homework asking your wife,relatives...checking the market around your area/tambon/province and nearby provinces ? Who are the bulk buyer doing the deliveries/wholesalers/associations/Clarias catfish farm owners within you immediate/nearby vicinities ?

Money can be made and i am making them but there's a lot of things involve in regards to understanding the geographical advantage and what produce to do to optimize output for you gain. A lot of this are involve in the operations, production, weather pattern, market share of the region...so on and so on...

I always say to friends/villagers/neighbours..."Mer khrai mer man" (northern thai language Kum Muang) meaning " to each his own profession". You have 10 rai, i too have 10 rai...but the produce output are not the same. You farm paddy and i farm fishes, same 10 rai but i made 10x more than you. But my capital investment are in the million figures and yours are less than a 100k and you have credits, plant first and pay later...mine are upfront...cash. You can't do fishes like i do and i can't do paddy like you...

Stick to what you know best...sugarcane plantation.

After you got all the facts for doing Clarias in your area, study them to see if it is really feasible...

I will gladly discuss and guide you on how well you should go about farming and selling them.

    Cheers...xhappy.png.pagespeed.ic.w4JpNxlSQh.png

Well that's fine RBH. But I think you've misunderstood.

My first line of questioning is "is it even possible to farm fish on a large scale relying on well water. If that is a negative, which it sounds like it is, no need for further investigation. Full stop. I may not be the smartest guy around, but I'm not an idiot either. No need to write a condescending post like this. Thanks.

As far as sugarcane goes.....hmmm.....knowing what i know now, I wouldn't advise anyone to go into it without some serious cash to invest. We have 100 rai and it's not enough to live off of. Not just off of farming cane. So we are looking at other options/ideas for what to do with our land that would be more productive.

Canada, I'm sorry if the post sound condescending...It's not my fault, i blame it on the bottle of Lao Khao. laugh.png

Please read it again and this time in a softer tone and slower pace... Just kind of imagine i am talking to you face to face with hands movement and asking you in an enquiry manner with my hand holding onto my chin.

My sets of questioning are to help me to do a assessment of your vicinities... I was waiting for you to check it out and get back to me. Why ? Because when you hit an obstacle like this "no stream no river or no to an equivalent water source support", it doesn't mean it will not work. My solution to this type of hurdle would be to do rental ponds...Which i did, not because i am short of water supply but i am short of land to further my expansion plan.

I only meant to help you find a solution, not to criticize or try belittling you.

Let me know what you find out and we shall see how best to tackle it.

    best regards.

Actually RBH this is bullshit for an excuse for your arrogance. I've read through this thread and I think you're full of yourself, not Lao Khao. Big deal, you made some money growing fish.

.You've been pretty clear in a couple of your answers, totally off the mark in most of them if you read my questions accurately. You have so far told me:

"Too risky if you do not have a stream of river nearby... too risky relying on underground water + cost factor."

"I mentioned well are not reliable become you can't see how much water is beneath it...can you ? A water reserve pond allow you to gauge how much water you have because you can see the water level. "

"During an event of emergency and suddenly your precious and expensive submersible pump fail you, that would be trouble... and without water replacement, your stock mortality rate just climb and climb."

"All this while you are only assuming base on maths regarding the output of your well and submersible pump. There's no a good way to start a commercial farming business. Have you done your homework asking your wife,relatives..."

"Stick to what you know best...sugarcane plantation."

And now you say "Because when you hit an obstacle like this "no stream no river or no to an equivalent water source support", it doesn't mean it will not work." Which is in direct contradiction to your previous answers and your tone. It also answers my very first question in my first post very clearly, but opposite of what you have said from then till now.

If you're going to apologise, then apologise, not give stupid excuses for your behaviour. I don't play games with people and I don't take well to people who do.

Have a great night with your whiskey.

Did you miss out the part where i said to do rental ponds (that have water source like a stream, river or an equivalent) if your land can't do it.

I didn't made some money, i made a lot of money.

Never mind...you are just too dumb to make this work. Stick to what you do best, being part of your problem.
