At Bangkok bank when I went in to get my mastercard debit card unblocked (they blocked cards recently due to fraud), they suggested I open a second savings account (with no atm card) to hold the bulk of my funds. I now use my first account for payments/withdrawals and keep a balance below 150k.. There was no charge. I added the second account to the mobile app so I can make transfers if I needed. Given the risks of fraud etc readers may consider reducing their exposure via this method.

I've been doing this for absolutely years with all my Thai bank accounts.

Surprised there are still folks out there that don't.

  2. Like the earlier poster I have all such items encrypted on my pc

on checking my HSBC stuff I too have the Telephone Banking Security Password (indeed derived from an old phone #) Set up some two decades or so ago & never used

Can see now how lack of retention of these old & seemingly irrelevant items can rear up to bite as you fall down the likes of the OP's rabbit hole clutching for roots and vines to grab on to.

What's the advantage of changing the date in the book instead of just writing a new journey in? It sounds like it's only a few bits of information. Am I underestimating it?

Its all about the plates and book roll on to the next new vehicle that the dealership attaches them to.

Fill up the book and they have an issue.

Withholding the book saves them the bother, or the pencil/eraser routine runs a close second.

Anecdotally though from my experience its all a bit over hyped only Brownshirt interface I had was one that stepped out from the roadside stop (milking wages from helmetless motorcy folk) to salute me and my shiny new pickup ????

Super rich on the lower floor on the airport express station level.

There are 2 or 3 more in that area, all have a competitive rate.

That's where the best rates are

The 'front line' booths on arrivals level are the 'rape & pillage rip offs'

The issue is whether you can sashay on down to the basement while being frogmarched to your Test n Go hotel

I was in a similar position with BKB ............ wanted 50%/50% they agreed, then backed out at the last minute.

Suspect my wife tipped them off to refuse so I would pay 100%.

I just backed out of the house purchase.

Next attempt, my wife forged the job paperwork, I put 25k/month in her bank, her pal pretended to be her employer, and SCB gave her a 90% mortgage.

I expect your wife was more trustworthy than mine.

As some pointed out it varies which is not all that helpful to you. In our case I was in the country less than a year on work permit and wife not working. We got a loan for 4.5mil with 600k deposit. The seller is a wealthy property developer with connections at a bank and Land department. All we did was sign the loan docs in her name. Easiest way is to find a bent loan officer!!!

"Walking the Bankbook" as the Thai expression says - with revolving fabricated income and invented work

&/or an amenable loan guy are the two de rigueur routes to use/combine.

Even so, expect minor flip flaps and changes of heart as the file gets escalated to ever 'bigger bosses' within the banks interminable hierarchy.

  6. Spoken over the years with several Thais embarking on this perilous endeavour of standing as guarantor

They have all exhibited the same mental blinkers to the obvious (to the rest of the world) dangers. Even when mapped out in baby logic they wont face facts:

The bank who are time served experts in this field refuse to grant this person credit without a third  party indemnifying the debt. Yet you, with no fiscal reserves or prior experience, think its all fine & dandy for you to do so ????

  7. OP never stated what form the gold was in

The assumption is that he is referring to a half kilo in bullion

There're are few dealers in 24ct gold in Thailand (from memory only two in Yaowarat) - if the requirement is for an import licence and somehow you succeed in having gotten this into Thailand without one, you may just find yourself between a rock and a hard place with it.
