  1. Good luck. I was looking/am looking to have a brass carabiner made...it has a swivel base and a spring-loaded clasp. I asked around Chinatown but no luck. I also contacted a few machine shops in Chiang Mai but so far nobody can do it... I keep hearing the word "China". Would love to know if you find a place.

There are many places that are able to do what you're wanting, but I'm assuming the asking price would be too high for your pocket for just a one-off job.

On a slight tangent, there are surprisingly, not many machining jobs that cannot be done in Thailand, it just depends, as always, on what you're willing to pay.

I'm actually not looking for a one-off. I would love to do only 100 but that doesn't seem possible either, cost-wise. Seems like 300 is the bare minimum that any one will consider talking about. If you have a suggestion as to where to go, I would be thrilled to have the info (Bkk or CM). I also have a belt-buckle I'm looking to make which doesn't have any moving parts and I would think easier to produce. I will post a pic....

    Thank you, Peter

  3. There are two bus companies at Indra Square (Baiyoke 2) that will ship overnight to Chiang Mai. One is called Indra Tour (or Intra Tour) and is located in the row of shops very close to Baiyoke 2). You bring it there by 5 in the afternoon and it will arrive in Chiang Mai in the morning. The cost varies with the size of package. Probably about 500 baht for 25 kilos. It can be picked up at their drop off point in CM. A little hard to find if you don't know where it is. They don't speak English and for packing they will direct you to folk that hang around that area selling packing supplies. Again, none to very little english. But service is quick and cheap. You really just need to show them the box and say "Chiang Mai". And they will give you a price. You write your name and phone number on it and in the morning it will be in CM. The pick up spot in CM is near the Night Bazaar.

  4. Hello,

Go to Wongwainyai. You can take the BTS, last stop on Silom line and walk to Charoen Rat Road. You could ask around in the leather shops for sewers. Speaking Thai would be very helpful. But maybe you already know this area. Good luck. I am in the same situation but I am in Chiang Mai.

  5. I just bought some in Chinatown 2 days ago. They are in many shops. Stainless is really expensive but non-stainless is around 60 baht for a 10cm tall industrial carabiner. The stainless is around 300 baht.

  6. Does anyone know where I could have a brass karabiner/hook made in Bkk? I have one as a sample and would like to have it copied as it is no longer made by the original maker. I need 100 or 200 pieces, perhaps more.... It will be used to attach a shoulder strap to a bag.

    Thank you, Peter

  8. Hi, does anyone have experience bringing merchandise on a Thai Airways flight and paying cargo rates and not overweight rates (which are upwards of 1200 baht/kilo)? In other words, your merchandise flies with you on the same flight you are on and you pick it up with your other luggage but pay for the extra weight using cargo prices. One guy told me he did this all the time but at the Thai office they had nothing to say about it other than to go to Thai cargo at the airport and ask there. I don't imagine that is a very easy place to get info, however, especially with my minimal Thai language skills. Any TV'ers have advice?

  9. Trying to locate transparency film for ink-jet printers. This is a transparent plastic sheet with one side smooth and the other side (the ink side) rough to the touch. Used to make transparencies for screen printing. Haven't had any luck locating anything in Chiang Mai. If anyone has a tip, thank you.

  10. Hi all, I'm looking for a small factory to produce some t-shirts. I need them to be made to my specs with the material of my choice so I think this rules out the usual places such as Jirapat (sp) and such. I believe those places use their material and their designs which, while fine, are not what I need. Thanks and a free t-shirt for the correct answer!

  11. That google map technique is a novel approach, good on ya! Thanks yous lozza. I'll give it a try.

The easiest way to find concentrations of residences is to zoom into an area of interest in Google Earth and then type "Mansion" and/or "Apartment" in the search box. That will show up clusters of residential blocks, then go walkabouts.

  12. ok another post by a lazy dude who doesn't want to do the internet legwork in searching out affordable housing. But jokes aside, perhaps a fellow farang has first-hand experience about a cheap monthly rental. I live in Chiang Mai but am in Bkk a fair bit and it might make sense to keep a cheap room and pay the monthy rate instead of hotels all the time. I remember a friend of mine had a place in Thonburi that was just fine but we have since fallen out of touch. Anybody got input on this one?

  13. thanks YAWL! To start, the correct title of the topic should have been, "Leather Bag Making Supplies" or "Leather Working Supplies" or "Leather Whatchamacallit Gizmos". The actual "leather making" well, the cows kind of take care of that. Screen printing supplies, I bought ink, screens, squeegees, emulsion, etc.....at a shop in Patumwan. As someone said before, get off at National Stadium and walk down the street to the intersection where Tesco Lotus is. Go to the left and after passing some shops that screen print you will find one that sells supplies, called: Winco Screen Col., LTD. 719/2 Rama VI Rd. (Buntadtong), Wangmai, Patumwan Tel. 026123141. Not much English spoken. They don't have any Flash Driers or big machines or lights but for start-up I think they have everything you will need to get your hands dirty. This will be my first attempt at doing it FYI.

BKK Dreaming, thanks for the sewing machine info. I'll check it out.

  14. I'm interested in pricing a used skiving machine and a used sewing machine, both for leather. Anybody have a source? I have seen some new ones in Wangwienyai, but not used. Thank you, of course! By the way, I located screen printing supplies if anyone wants to know.

  15. Who wants to give a shout out for some discount rates this wkend in bkk? I usually stay on thong lor for around 900-1000 which is fine for me but maybe due to the biblical-floods there are some particularly good deals to be had.
