1. You could park at Mega Bangna and take their free shuttle bus to the BTS. I'm not sure about the frequency. Otherwise, I agree that I would park behind the market opposite Tesco Lotus On Nut. 60 baht fee. It's a 1 minute walk to the BTS. I've managed to park at Villa on Soi 11 for numerous hours without a charge in the past, but I am not sure if they have changed their policies at all.

Personally, I would hate to drive into Bangkok if I needed to find parking for the day and didn't live here. Due to the nature of my work, I am fortunate to be able to park at numerous locations, office buildings, etc. where I am known to work from time to time.

We need an iPhone / Android App that shows all public parking locations, hours, fees, and maps ... That would be a handy thing to have on hand!

  2. We've recently purchased a new car. We picked it up on Friday, so we haven't had it for long. Driving over the weekend so far, I have encountered several so-called checkpoints stopping both cars and motorbikes. There have been far more than usual. Obviously, we are driving around on red plates which sometimes have issues depending on the dealer. Ours are legit. We weren't stopped once! We weren't even glanced at. If I had been driving my motorbike, I would have been stopped almost every time. It was worth it to order that dark tint!

  3. I ordered a Honda City S AT two weeks ago. Delivery is in January. Many Bangkok dealers have been busy with the car show, but the car will be delivered next month. You need to go to the big guys. I ordered mine from Honda on Rama IV in Klong Toei.

Be sure to post an update on the day it's ready for collection smile.png

Since you asked, the car is ready for collection as of today. It was delivered to the dealership today. It is, as promised, in January. I got a lot of free accessories that made me happy, rear spoiler, rear sensors, etc.

  4. I work opposite the Loxley Building, so I don't need to go that far. However, the lights at Loxley would be the third set of traffic lights if I am not mistaken! I also do some work at Lumpini Tower at night. I drive around the area often. 3 or 4 lights is not a problem for me. It's good to let others know about these back roads. I just hope they don't end up wandering around the KT Slums in the middle of the night while trying to negotiate a new way by following these instructions! LoL! Cheers! It took me a while to find all of these back ways myself.

  5. Just keep in mind that thanon rot fai is one way for certain periods of the day. In the morning you can only go towards At Narong and between 4 and 7 pm you can only go towards Sanphawut.

Which is what makes it so good to use. No traffic lights and only 2 lanes of traffic means that a bike never stops moving at the tidal times. If you know the whole route, you can get from Bang Na to Sathorn and only meet 3 sets of lights.

That, plus the lack of police is a bonus.

That is not possible. You cannot make it from Bang Na to Sathorn with only 3 lights. The first set will come around the port (At Narong) when you get that far. Then, you have to deal with the one just beyond the slums (The name is beyond me at the moment ... Sunlalakorn or something ... near the customs department) ... Then, you have to deal with the big one at the intersection near the Loxley Building (Rama III meets Asoke Montri). It isn't possible to get to Sathorn from the Loxley Building without encountering at least one traffic light ... Under the expressway ... Yes, you can take a serious detour along back roads, but you are still going to face the massive police presence under the expressway there.

  6. Yes, I know all of those back sois, but I haven't needed to use them in a while. I got used to just taking Rama IV. I guess I will go back to At Narong and drive past the slums daily to get to my destination. Or, I can deal with the back sois to bring me out behind Tesco. I work very, very close to there.

  7. Indeed, they are back, and they are back in force. I have been stopped 4 times in the last 2-3 weeks. It has become obvious to me that most motorbikes are staying to the far left again, so I am doing the same. Here are the locations I have been stopped:

    1) Asoke-Montri between Sukhumvit and Rama IV (Heading towards Rama IV)

    - They were stopping all motorbikes. I was stopped. I spoke in the best Thai I could. I hadn't done anything wrong. While reaching for my wallet, I explained that I was a teacher and had class in 15 minutes. I was told to proceed. I never turned off my motorbike.

    2) Rama IV Road - Heading towards Prakhanong (Just before the Bangkok University Intersection)

    - This time I was driving in the right lane. I was going quickly to bring my pregnant woman lunch. I knew they were going to nail me, so I handed 100 baht with my license. I got a lecture about driving in the right lane. I was told that mixed babies are beautiful and was sent on my way.

    3) Rama IV Road - Heading towards town (Opposite Channel 3 Building)

    - No reason. They were stopping everyone. I mentioned my school. I was sent away. The motorbike was never turned off.

    4) Prakhanong's Finest (On Nut BTS - heading out of town)

    - No reason. The pregnant woman was on the back. She said she had to pee. I was told to go before getting to my wallet. This was yesterday afternoon.

  8. I have spotted a new Domino's Pizza in Bangkok! After seeing it, I did a google search which led me to this thread. There will be a Domino's in the new Holiday Inn being built on Sukhumvit Soi 22. Does anyone have more information about this branch opening?

  9. this plan spurred incremental demand and stimulated a local industry and the thai economy in a year when the rest of the world was sucking wind.

it was a revenue neutral short term boost to the economy which worked.

obviously an unpopular failed populist policy of the pt government

Just out of curiosity do you know how much the taxation department makes per car. If it is less than the 100,000 baht tax rebate given to the buyers then it is just another loss making project to keep the punters happy.

100,000 bt is the max refund. It varies with the model of car. I believe my wife will receive 86,000 baht.

When renewing my insurance last week I was told that my car (in ex wife's name) qualifies for this. Can you please tell me how your wife applied for this? My ex is upcountry and the deadline is on Monday...wish me luck.

Your ex needs to take the required documents to the Excise Tax Department. She fills out an application form which can be downloaded from their website and filled in ahead of time. We had some paperwork from the dealer regarding the car with receipts and stuff. I think a copy of her Tabian Ban and ID Card as well. It was all relly easy and took less than 15 minutes in the office here in Bangkok. Hell, they even gave me some chocolate. Have your ex read about the documetns and find the office she needs to go to: https://firstcar.excise.go.th/
all ive read says the plan is revenue neutral

even the nation says so, so

are you saying it aint revenue neutral

then prove it

uh, ... please

and when you finish with that then explain why it has to be revenue neutral to be a successful project

lots of important successful things governments do arent revenue neutral

How on Earth can pay, pay, pay be revenue neutral?

How on Earth can money paid by the bank to the car company inject funds into the local economy?

Are you kidding? How do you think car manufacturing plants in Thailand pay their employees? What do those employees do with their salaries?

  11. That's not the information I got from the Toyota dealer we bought a Vios from. I'll trust that information before I'll get another verifiable source.

Let me see if I have this correct. You are going to trust a car salesperson and disregard what the Excise Tax Department says regarding how and when they will distribute the funds associated with the rebate? Have you applied for the rebate? If not, you are out of time buddy. Surely, you would have visited to office to apply and received the information from someone more reliable that a car salesperson.

  12. They will pay it back over a period of 5 years, maximum 20 000 per year. If you sell the car, payments will stop.

Not quite. It is not spread out. It is paid out after a year of ownership as stated previously in this thread.

That's not the information I got from the Toyota dealer we bought a Vios from. I'll trust that information before I'll get another verifiable source.

My source of information comes from 3 places:

    1) K-Motors - We also looked at buying a Vios from their Sukhumvit Branch.

    2) Honda Phraram 4 (Rama IV Honda) - Where we purchased our Honda City. Saleswoman by the name of Aom and other staff at the dealership.

    3) Excise Tax Department (Silom Branch) - Where we submitted the paperwork for the rebate. This final source is the office who handles the claim and payment of the tax rebate. I will take their word for it. If you have any doubt, feel free to go down there or to one of their other branches and ask. They took a copy of the bank book to deposit the money into after a year!

  13. Cannot sell within 5 years as they won't let you change the name in the Tabien Rot. However, pay 7000b a month, nothing down, 100,000b rebate after you've paid 84,000b then stop paying the bank. Bank repossesses car you've driven for a year, you made 16,000b, the bank is screwed.

This logic doesn't make any sense at all. Anyone who would be able to secure a loan with nothing down would have to have sizable assets. A person with enough money to qualify for this kind of loan would not shrug off a 7,000 baht payment because it would be nothing for them. More realistically, they would be looking at a down payment of 20-30%. That's going to run about 150,000 baht before you ever put the key into the ignition of your new car (Honda City in my example, as I just bought one).

  14. There are many options if you get away from the BTS further up On Nut road. They are all aimed at the Thai market. If proximity to the BTS is important, you can't beat the Bedrooms. It is far superior to Imm Fusion. I've stayed at both. They are both acceptable, but Bedrooms has a clear advantage on every point imaginable ....

  15. One debt collection agency forecasts 20% of loans will go bad so how many months can grandma have the vehicle with the down payment and instalements to collect the rebate and have free motoring?whistling.gif .
AFAIK, the rebate will be paid out, spread out, over 5 years. So if the car loan can't be paid after a few months, the rebate payments will stop.
Nope. Payment is made in one lump sum, about a year after rebate application is submitted.

Nope, my friend is mightily pi@@ed off because he's getting the rebate paid out over 5 years (he's paying the car in installements over 5 years), the first rate should arrive in about 2 months. Only when you pay the car in 'cash' you get the rebate in one payment, apparently.

It sucks to be your friend. We also have 5 year financing, but our payments of the 100,000 baht will begin from 3 months after the application and requirements are met. The 100,000 is paid out in 4 equal installments of 25,000 baht each with a deposit every 3 months. The full 100,000 will have been paid within a year.

  16. Indeed, this isn't exactly anything new. It's been around for a while. It's just the latest reincarnation of the same thing. Except, you can use it at McDonalds now. It's a shame that they have not been able to connect it with the MRT yet. That's the big one. I drive anyway, so the rabbit card is just a space filler in my wallet. I loathe both the BTS and MRT.
