Most expats I see, ostensibly 'living the dream', are obese, tatted-up, Chang wife beater-wearing, guys thinking they are doing Thai women a favor.
I don't know anyone like that but you're right, there's definitely a lot of knuckle-draggers out there.

I wonder how many people who took lemsips also eventually died of it?

I went out for beers on New Years eve and developed a 'cold' on Jan 3, it's still going now but not too bad.
It is however nothing like the one I had back in July which was considerably worse.

Ah, dual pricing, they don't like it do they?

I thought it was a list of contacts from his literal phone book, lists of people who's phone numbers he wrote down - so anyone he ever phoned could be on there.
If it's the same list that was leaked last year then it's going to be pretty meaningless.

That's not much tax for a while year, this is pennies to a central government.

Normally the police simply enforce the laws which are made by the politicians or 'lawmakers'
Because it's the job of elected officials to change laws, not appointed civil servant bureaucrats.

By the way, there has been no development regarding the increasing of the visa exempt period from 30 days to 60 days for European and Middle Eastern nationalities. Well, we are already halfway into the peak tourism season, so, I am afraid this will most probably happen sometime near the end of this year.
I doubt it - how do you think the Chinese would feel about that unless they get 90 days as well?
They're not going to accept it and when that happens they pull the plug.

I told them its all on their computers and they said we dont have access to that.
Low level workers rarely have access to all the information on file about you.

C'mon, dont keep us all in suspenders.
Did the bank withhold 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30% just in case you decide to be a tax resident this year ?
lol, of course not.

So you claim know several people who this has happened to
Yes.
The rest is irrelevant, they were guilty of exceeding the exact description of what was on their work permit.
The undercover aspect of people lying in wait posing as customers and waiting to pounce when a chef does something not 100% chef related, and instigating it - they were immigration police posing as customers in one place.
They didn't arrest anyone - it was only about money.

Friday was a bank holiday in Thailand so that probably wouldn't have made it here last year regardless.
Good point - my wire arrived today, just under 250k Baht, I sent it last year and it arrived on the first banking day of the year, today.

buy the rumor sell the news. etf's will be announced soon.
I wouldn't sell this news when/if it comes. It fundamentally changes the entire market.
I do expect potential 'turbulence' on the day

There will be no withholding tax deducted in the coming months as a change like this will take years to implement on bank IT Level, not to mention Thai RD would need to confirm that Joe Sixpack is now a thai tax resident at excat the moment he has spend 180 days in Thailand.
A good point, none of us are tax resident here for this year until about the beginning of July.

2024 already; waiting for reports of members who had transfers to Thailand this year...
lol, I sent a wire on Thursday 28th December, 2023 and it hasn't arrived yet.
I'll bet the slackers at my bank in the UK were mostly on holiday between Christmas and New Year and didn't process it. I sent quite a bit more than normal, about 250k Baht and sometimes they send it to their compliance department for whatever reason even though the amounts are relatively low - and I'll bet that's the big office with just one or two staff in there between Christmas and New Year.
Maybe I get it Jan 2.

There's plenty of room for hearsay and anecdotes, after all we should remember - this is a discussion forum, not a legal review.

I watched 'The Family Plan' last night, very average but something to do for a couple of hours.
I've been running out of things to watch lately so have lowered the bar and started to watch things I would normally skip.
I still have Oppenheimer on my USB but have yet to watch it due to its length, will get around to it one day.
Looking forward to Napoleon in the new year even though the reviews were not fantastic.- 1

It is however a stretch of the imagination to think banks might with hold tax on all inbound transfers, for the reasons you have stated and more.
Indeed - it's complete nonsense and will never happen, ever.

6 hours ago, stat said:In the case that you meant the Thai bank will deduct a certain when you transmit money to Thailand that would be difficult to implement as in the first year you are not a tax resident of Thailand. In addition they do not know your tax bracket. Of course they could charge you 35% right away but then they could close TH right away for all expats. So all in all highly unlikely especially in 2024 as IT changes like this one take years and there has been no mentioning of a law like this. They are already taxing interest from a thai bank with a withholding tax that is what I guessed happened to you in India as well.
In addition to this, you might be living in Thailand remitting millions of Baht every month between Jan 1 and June 20th when you leave and don't return until Jan 3 the following year - making you a non tax resident for the year in question rendering all those millions and anything else you decide to send during the rest of the year non taxable regardless of where it comes from and its tax status.
This is why it will never happen as residency isn't decided until the 181st day of the yeat and us foreigners can be highly mobile.

I am very surprised this is still required as it's not required for general entry to the country any more since about May.
If you really want to avoid it I would wait a year or two - these vaccines probably won't exist at all by then.- 2

Yes, the only problem with that is that it seems to override a law which was voted on in parliament - and you can't do that with a memo.
